Words with Weight

Ever heard the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me?”

Although some words oftentimes have no intention of harm, they can come off rude, demeaning, or offensive, which can tear you down and affect you more than you thought they could.

Just because the words of others don’t define us as a people doesn’t mean they can’t strike a nerve every once in a while.

As someone that grew up on YouTube, I’ve learned that people can say awful things, whether those nasty words spawn from jealousy, hate, or just plain boredom.  I’ve learned to take rejection, criticism, judgement and everything that comes along with it.

Being a teenage girl in today’s society, this is something God could use us to be a light in. I wanted to dive into scripture and build a conviction for how my every day conversations with others should be.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29

When we’re with our friends, our conversations can be full of gossip and drama. Or we can steer our conversations away from “unwholesome talk” and encourage and build each other up. If our conversations aren’t beneficial to those who listen, then we need to rethink what we’re talking about.

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” – Colossians 4:6

When our conversations are full of grace, we grow in patience and dignity. Whether someone comes to us with drama, anxiety, depression, etc. we’ll know how to extend support and love to them.

“May my lips overflow with praise, for you teach me your decrees. May my tongue sing of your word, for all your commands are righteous.” – Psalm 119:171-173

When we replace our negative conversations with those of praise and grace, you will see the entire attitude of your friends, family, or whoever you’re with change.

Anyone can talk the talk, but it takes a genuine follower of the Bible to walk the walk..

So, next time you’re tempted into ungodly words and conversations, keep your eyes fixed on the one who extends endless amounts of grace, love, and wisdom.

Put on the Full Armor of God

“Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything,…

“Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” – Ephesians 6:10-18

When you wake up in the morning, what is the first thing you think about?

Do you wake up wondering what you’re going to wear? Or what you’re about to eat for breakfast?  Although I consider these two questions every morning, I try to think a little deeper into my agenda for the day.

The Bible is full of many lessons and different ways to actually apply scripture to your life.

Each part of Ephesians 6:10-18 gives us steps to perfectly equip ourselves for the day ahead.

Belt of Truth

Honesty is the best policy and it will benefit you in the long run. Practice honesty in the simplest of ways, by being truthful when you’re with your friends, with your family, in class, etc.

Breastplate of Righteousness

For the longest time, I had always heard the term “righteousness” but never truly knew its meaning. Righteousness means “the quality of being morally right or justifiable” or as the Bible uses it, “following religious or moral laws.” Put on the breastplate of righteousness to be able to defend against temptation and sin throughout your day.

Gospel of Peace

Keep the Gospel with you anywhere and everywhere you go. Keep God’s word in your mind so you can have the Spirit of peace over you no matter what the day brings your way!

Shield of Faith

Your faith is one of the strongest things you have and can protect you from fear, anxiety, doubt, and so many other things. Remember to clothe yourself with the shield of faith to have a constant reminder that God is fighting your battles.

Helmet of Salvation

Knowing that we have salvation through Christ’s sacrifices for us should be our “helmet,” the thing that we can fall back on and have faith in. With the helmet of salvation, we can face the day ahead.

Sword of the Spirit

Although you can’t physically see God, you can see him fighting your day-by-day battles. Be a witness to the amazing things that the Holy Spirit is doing in your life, whether it be restoring health to a loved one or taking away the anxiety your heart constantly feels.

Wake up every day and clothe yourself with the armor of the one who beats every battle, takes away every fear, and reassures us of the life he so greatly prepared for us.

Are You Hot or Cold?

If you were to rate your relationship with God on a scale from 1-10, with 1 being cold and 10 being hot, where would you land?

Now, I’m not saying you should rate your faith in God on a scale, but I do want you to consider one thing: are you lukewarm for God?

You might be thinking: What? Lukewarm? What does that even mean?

I would define lukewarm as being a 5 on the scale. Sure, you believe in God, but your life doesn’t fully reflect the way a godly life should look. Maybe you go to church on Sundays and open your Bible every once in a while, but are your thoughts and actions reflecting that of a follower of Christ?

When I first started following God, I could’ve considered myself a “lukewarm” Christian. I could talk the talk but I not always walked the walk. I would pray occasionally and request the things I wanted from God, but my life didn’t reflect that of a Christian’s at all.

I read a quote that completely changed my heart and my perspective.

“Following Christ isn’t something that can be done halfheartedly or on the side. It is not a label we can display when it is useful. It must be central to everything we do and are.”

When we go to class, we shouldn’t only talk to God when we need a good grade on a test or want an A on a paper. He should be at the center of our day. Someone we thank for the little things.

In our group of friends, we shouldn’t only pray for our friends when they’re going through a break up or needing to nail a good interview for a job. We should stray away from gossip, temptation to fall into sin, and other things that don’t reflect that of a godly person.

In high school, I would be filled with fear or anxiety about both big and little things in my life. One way I became “hot” for God was by leaning on him and giving him control instead of worrying about how I could be in control of my life.

I’ve learned that there are times when we may not feel like spending time with God, or it just seems like He is not present at all. With my doubts and questions, it seems as if He is so far away. Recently, this has been my battle. If I’m honest, it hurts and I hate that I “feel” this way. But I push through. The best thing to know through this time is that God isn’t surprised by this. He wants me to want Him, and I want Him so much. So I pray for a heart that wants Him earnestly.

When Paul was talking about being “lukewarm” he meant this with the way we live our lives, the way we talk, who we choose to hang with, etc. So, if you’re questioning God, or if you feel as if you have a hard time walking in your faith right now, don’t lose heart. The God above who knows you inside and out, knows your struggle. He wants you to talk to Him, and He may be trying to walk you through the desert for a period of time to teach you something. Lean in. Step in faith. This turned into a tangent, but I believe someone needed to hear it.

He’s a jealous God, and he wants us to fall in love with him and everything that comes along with the journey.

“Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive. Serve the Lord. When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful.” – Romans 12:11-12

True dependence, like the kind of 100% certainty, doesn’t come easy.

Growing up, I depended on my parents. I depended on them for food, education, a car, a place to come home to… I even caught myself depending on them for my joy, peace, and happiness at times.

Growing up, I depended on my friends.  I depended on them for fun, social status, and having them as a listening ear.  All of which let me down from time and time.

Growing up, I depended on myself.  I depended on myself for control, for my future, for peace. I thought I could handle the world by myself, without help from God or others.

But God says, “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered” (Proverbs 28:26).

This verse was an eye opener. When I thought about what God referred to as “wisdom,” I wanted to discover more of how I could depend on God’s truth instead of what I figured out was simply my truth.

At this age, we depend on so many different things for happiness, peace, contentment, etc.  But through prayer, I’ve found out what the true meaning of dependence is.  I wanted to share with you three different ways, along with verses, to reveal to you the true way to find dependence on God.

Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Sometimes we feel like God isn’t on our side, and this is the biggest lie the devil could put in our heads.  God is always fighting for us, always rooting for us, and always wanting the best for us.

I urge you to pray for stillness. While God is fighting the battle, pray for peace and a conscious mind that God is working even though you can’t see the outcome yet.  All we have to do is surrender to him!

Isaiah 41:13 says, “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you.”

The deeper we dive into scripture, the more God’s character is revealed to us.

The stronger the relationship we have with God, the more we truly know and love him. We can strengthen this relationship by talking to God as if he’s our friend, because He is. If we can depend on our best friends, can’t we then depend on the creator of the universe?

Jeremiah 29:12 says, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”

Whether you deny it or not, we all love a listening ear. We all want someone to sit and listen to us, uninterrupted with an eager heart.

This is one of the coolest things about God. He desires our requests and is excited to talk to us. The creator of the universe is excited to talk to US!

The more you talk to God, the greater your dependence on him will be.  He is always listening, and you will find yourself growing closer and closer to him through faithful prayer, and reading in His word.

So, what will you do? Will you sit down and give God a minute, 30 minutes, an hour of your day?

God is ready to listen to you, you just have to be ready to talk to him!

Loving Others When We Think We Can’t

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know…

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” – 1 John 4:7

Have you ever had that one person in your life that makes you think loving them is impossible?  If I were to guess, someone probably just popped into your mind.

When I think of loving others, I think of my family, my closest friends, etc. Who I don’t think about are the people that I find hardest to get along with, or the people I just don’t see eye-to-eye with at all

When the Bible talks about love, how many times have you heard God say, “do not love those who have done wrong to you” or “love only your closest friends and family?” … That’s right, you never have.

As followers of Christ, we are called to much more than loving only those who are easy to love.  We are called to love everyone, whether or not they’re our brothers and sisters in Christ, whether or not they’re slow or easy to anger, whether or not they’re forgiving or stubborn… Everyone.

This generation is full of fake love. We say “I love you” to almost anyone, even when how we feel toward them is the furthest away from love.

So, how then do we learn to naturally love others whole heartedly? There are multiple ways to do so, but here are three ways I put into practice daily.

Put others above yourself.

Romans 12:9-10 says, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

Have you ever noticed that one person who is constantly putting themselves last and constantly building others up? Strive to be like them.

When we learn to put others first, our pride and stubbornness disappears. We learn to see things from their perspective and learn to love them gratefully and honestly, just like Jesus did.

Show outstanding love by serving others with no strings attached.

1 John 3:16,18 says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters… Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Anyone can say they’re going to do this and say they’re going to do that, but it takes a true person to put that plan into action.

When we follow through with our actions and learn to serve others with a humble heart, our love for Christ shines through.  When we love others with no strings attached, we learn the humility that God felt, shaping us to be more like him.

Work toward peace instead of waiting around for it.

Peace with someone doesn’t always come easily. Ephesians 4:2-3 says, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

As followers of Christ, we need to work toward peace.  Reach out to forgive others, even when it feels impossible.  Swallow your pride and show what it truly means to forgive others as God forgives us.

Now, put your plan into action. What are you going to do differently this week to love others well? I encourage you to work toward peace by loving those in your life who are hardest to love!

Direction Determines Destination

“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip toe if you must, but take the step.” Before moving to Georgia,…

“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip toe if you must, but take the step.”

Before moving to Georgia, I was constantly asking God to show me the path he wanted me to take. I found myself asking Him to show me clearly what He wanted me to do when I moved to this new place.

When we think about our future, our minds can wander. “Where will I end up?” “Which path should I choose?” “Do I really even know if this is what I want?”

I recently listened to a sermon on the topic of direction. The speaker said that “direction, not intention, determines destination.”  We can intend on doing a particular thing, but it means nothing without direction laid out in front of us.

God’s direction is the best direction to follow, but it can be hard to know what exactly that is.  It’s important for us to know which way to go in order to reach the destination God has for us, whether that be who we marry or which college we go to.

Proverbs 3:6 says, “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

To acknowledge God is to make him known in all areas of your life.

If you want to know the direction God wants you to take, you need to truly know him.

Acknowledge God in your day-to-day life. Acknowledge him in what you do while walking to class, on the weekends, driving in your car. Acknowledge his goodness and pay attention to his still, small voice.

Jeremiah 6:16 says, “Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the path where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls…”

Our first step can always be to ask God for clarity. Although God already knows what we’re going through, talking and praying to him will reveal more things than you thought it ever could.

So first, “ask for the path where the good way is.” Ask God for help. He is more than willing to reveal his plan to you piece by piece, all you have to do is simply ask! Be still and listen for his direction. Understand that it is in His due time as well. Sometimes His plans may not be revealed to us right away, so be actively patient. Seek Him in that waiting period.

One of the most important things to note is to make sure you’re asking for God’s will to be done, not your own will.  Sometimes we get too caught up in asking solely for what we want, instead of asking for God’s way over our own.

Second, “walk in it.” You can talk about choosing a certain direction for your life but it means nothing until you put that direction into action.

Take the path that God has for you. It is so, so much better than our own plans.

Once we find the right direction, we discover our destination. Put purpose behind your intention and you’ll be at God’s perfect destination in no time.

Shopping vintage can give you some of the best hidden gems and forgotten styles out there! There are tons of styles that are making a comeback, along with different vintage things to add to your Christmas list.  Here are a few of my favorites to channel your old-school side!

One of my favorite throwback styles of shoes is Adidas’ Superstar sneakers. The original version was introduced in 1963 and is back in action!  The shoe is widely available and super affordable.  I love to throw them on with shorts, jeans, or even a cute T-shirt dress.  You can wear them with just about anything to create the perfect street-style look.

Chelsea Crockett - Calvin Klein CrewneckAnother fun vintage look is a Calvin Klein or Adidas crewneck sweatshirt. These slouchy, oversized sweatshirts are often color blocked for a retro fashionable style or solid with an apparent vintage logo.  This is a classic “90’s” look and can be paired with leggings and sneakers.  Check out the picture on the left for example!

Apart from clothing, Urban Outfitters supplies all your other vintage needs.  They sell old-school record players, records, and Polaroid cameras! These are the perfect addition to your Christmas list!  (The record player can even be a cute decoration for your room!)

Be sure to shop at your resell-it stores to see what you can find yourself!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  It’s the meal that gives you the energy to start your day!  I always think of quick and easy meals I can create to give my body the boost it needs.  Well, toast is a fast way to start your day and it can be extremely healthy and nutritious if you know what to add to it.

Chelsea Crockett - Toast RecipesThe first recipe involves a piece of wheat toast with peanut butter and bananas!  Smear on a healthy serving of smooth or crunchy peanut butter, whatever you prefer. Take a banana and slice it up then put the banana slices all over the top of the peanut butter. Feel free to sprinkle a little cinnamon across the top of your toast, too!

Another recipe that I love is avocado toast. I take half an avocado and smash it up then add salt, pepper, and some red pepper flakes to it. Stir it all up and smear the avocado spread all over the top of your toast. It’s delicious! Feel free to add some bacon slices if you have some :).

My other favorite go-to recipe is scrambled egg with cheese and bacon on toast.  I love to take a fresh egg and scramble it in olive oil. Then, I add some cheddar cheese to the mix and stir it up. I toast my wheat bread and put the scrambled egg on top of it after it’s done! While I’m cooking all of that, I fry my bacon in the microwave. It comes out very crisp and I add it to my scrambled egg sandwich! YUM!

Bon appetit! – Chelsea

Everyone wants fuller, thicker hair.  Especially when you throw your hair up into a ponytail, you want it to appear as full and luscious as it can!  There are lots of different ways you can achieve this, you just have to follow a few tips in order to do so.  Here are 5 different tips to volumize your ponytail!

  • Before every ponytail, you’ll need to add some texture to your hair. This will make your hair look fuller before you even put it into a ponytail.  Whether you do this with mousse or texture spray, it’s the first step to almost every hairstyle!
  • Prop up your ponytail with two bobby pins. Set two bobby pins in place under your ponytail like the picture below.  This gives it the height it needs and will also help keep it in place for the night!Chelsea Crockett - Bobby Pin Hack
  • Add some dry shampoo. Dry shampoo does more than just its original purpose.  If you add some to your hair before you put it up, it’ll feel cleaner and appear thicker!
  • Tease different sections of your hair. To keep the messy look, tease different parts of your pony so it’s not too over-the-top but still has some lift in it.

Did these tips work for you?  Share with me below what works best for your hair!

Christmas is creeping up on us faster than we know it… and I’m so excited!  Around Christmas time, my friends and I always do secret Santa gift exchanges.  It can be hard coming up with different things to get each year, so I wanted to tell you about the idea I’ll be using for my upcoming gift exchanges!

For me, I can never have too much makeup.  Who doesn’t love trying out new brands and products?  For your kit, you’ll need at least three different products, depending on how much you want to spend.  Chelsea Crockett - Makeup KitYou’ll at least need a lipstick, some type of skin product, and an eye product.  Since most people already have a certain foundation they like to use, pick out a highlighter, blush, etc.  As for eyes, purchase a mascara or eye shadow to add to their kit.

Now that you know what to put in your DIY makeup kit, here are a few of my favorites that are inexpensive yet good quality!  For a lipstick, try Tarte’s Color Splash Hydrating Lipstick.  There are 24 different shades to choose from!  As for a highlighter, you can buy Urban Decay’s Mini Naked Illuminated Powder for only $12 from Sephora.  Since the other two products are a little pricy, add your favorite drugstore mascara to complete the kit!

Are you going to try out this idea this year?  Let me know what products you fill your kit with! 🙂

When I think of recycling, I immediately think of paper, plastic, and soda cans.  But turns out you can recycle your very own makeup products after you’re done using them!  Pretty cool, right?  Here are three different ways to recycle your products to make sure you’re getting the most out of them!

  • Depending on the brand of your makeup, you can recycle a certain number of empty containers for a brand-new product! Chelsea Crockett - MAC LipstickBrands such as M.A.C. for example will take six of your empty M.A.C. product containers and give you a free lipstick in return.  Look up a couple of your favorite brands and see if they offer any deals like this as well!
  • Be smart when you buy! If you care enough to put in a little research, see which brands make their product containers out of recyclable material.  Whether the product is made with glass, plastic, or another material, we can be smart about which products we can recycle and which have to go in the trash.
  • Think of how many products fall to the bottom of your makeup bag that go completely unused. I know for me, it’s a lot!  I encourage you to go through your bags monthly or every few months and find the products you have yet to open.  Odds are, if you haven’t opened them yet, you probably don’t need them! I encourage you to donate them to a women’s shelter nearby or find someone who would appreciate it more than you would!

Now you can start doing more than just simply using your makeup products!  Find a second purpose for them like the ones above! 🙂

Sweater weather is finally here which means cold winds and extra dry skin.  It’s hard to have that all-natural glow from summer when the temperatures are dropping… and dropping fast!  Here are a few different cold weather facial fixes that’ll transform your skin just in time for the holidays! 🙂

Chelsea Crockett - Neutrogena Skin CareMicrodermabrasion serums and treatments can make the transition smooth for brightening up your complexion! While microdermabrasion treatments are very expensive, you can try an at home device like Neutrogena’s Microdermabrasion System. It helps to boost surface cell turnover to purify and exfoliate your skin.  Neutrogena’s treatment is only $22.99 and it works wonders!  Try it out for yourself!

Another amazing facial treatment is Clinique’s Smart Treatment Oil.  It has a moisturizing anti-oxidant blend that will help your skin to repair itself after it takes a cold weather beating!  It’ll keep your natural oils locked in place. Its ingredients help you to hydrate, heal, and brighten your skin for a skin makeover.

Lastly, lip balms can give your lips some TLC from cracking and flaking. Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment is one of my favorites. It’s a chap stick that comes in all different colors from coral to wine. It’s made from vitamins C and E, beeswax, grape seed oil, jojoba, and real sugar! It also has an SPF 15 for added protection!

I hope this helps you out during the upcoming cold months! 🙂

XOXO – Chelsea
