As you look at the day before you, what emotions consume you? Do you wake up with an immediate mindset of dread and negativity? Or are you filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s ahead?

It’s natural for us to wake up and grumble about our day full of work meetings or our school day filled with tests and presentations. It’s human nature to want to stay in bed and not face the responsibilities you have awaiting you.

I’ve learned that those first few thoughts I have in the morning are an indicator of how my mood will be throughout the day. I’ve read that if you train your thoughts away from negativity first thing in the morning, it prevents your head from entering a space you don’t want to be in.

So, as you look at the day before you, consider these few things.

Approach the day with gratitude.

Have one of your first thoughts in the morning be thoughts of praise. Thank God for the beautiful morning weather, the quick morning commute, the quiz that ended up being easier than you thought it would be… When you decide first thing to approach each situation, good or bad, with focusing on the good, you will be more joyful and excited for even the simplest of things.

Have an attitude of “get to” not “have to”.

When I was younger, one of my teachers told us to change our words from “have to” to “get to.” For example, we “get to” go to school to learn more, we “get to” go to practice even though today may be harder than others, we “get to” go to meetings all day for work… Phrases like this humbles us and makes us remember how blessed we are for even the simplest of things.

Counter negative thoughts with positive ones.

Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

I practice this daily and always tell others to do the same. As soon as your mind starts picking out the negatives, it can quickly spiral into a bad attitude. I know this from experience! But when you immediate counter the bad thoughts with positive ones, you gain an entire new perspective. Think about the things that are worthy of praise like the verse says above!

When you wake up tomorrow, how are you going to approach the day ahead? Are you going to try and make a conscious effort to do the things above? Or are you going to mumble and grumble through your day?

I encourage you the next few days to try these attitude and mindset changes. God wants us to be our most joyful and hopeful selves, which is hard to achieve when we’re full of negativity and dread. Take advantage of every day, we only have so many!

The Things You Can Control vs. The Things You Can’t

As human beings, we like to be in control of every aspect of our lives. It’s normal for us to want to have a grip on everything that’s going on…

As human beings, we like to be in control of every aspect of our lives. It’s normal for us to want to have a grip on everything that’s going on around us and to try make it this way or that way.

There are things we can control, such as our attitude, our actions, and our priorities. That being said, there are also things we have no control over, that we have to give to God and trust with Him instead.

Things You Can Control

  1. Your attitude.

Although this can be one of the hardest things to control, your attitude can affect the people around you, your mindset, and your perspective. You don’t always have to vocalize any time something is annoying you or anytime you’re in a bad mood. Using your attitude to make a situation better or to motivate others to do the same is an easy way to turn a bad day around!

  1. Your actions.

Along with your attitude, you can also control your actions. Actions speak so much louder than words and they can represent who you are as a person. Your true self is shown through how you treat your friends, family, and those around you.

Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Through our actions, we can witness to those who may not yet know Jesus!

  1. Your priorities.

Throughout life, your priorities are constantly going to change. One year, your top priority could be your new job, followed by the new person your dating or your social life. I’ve realized that when I’m not prioritizing God first, I fall behind in so many other areas of my life, as well.

Things You Can’t Control

  1. Time.

As much as we want to have control over the timing in our life, most of the time we can’t. Acts 1:7 says, “He said to them: ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.” It’s not our responsibility to pick when things do or don’t happen in our lives. We need to give up our grip over the things we can’t control, especially when God already has His perfect timing!

  1. The future.

I think this is the thing most people struggle with trying to control. It’s something that can terrify you if you let it. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

If we put all our trust in Jesus Christ, we have no reason to worry about our future, for his plans are only to prosper us and give us hope and security. We don’t have to control our future, especially when our heavenly father already does that for us!

  1. Other people.

Although we can’t control the actions of other people, we can control who we surround ourselves with. If someone is draining and discouraging to be around, replace them with someone who builds you up and encourages you! People that push you to be a better person in Christ are the people you want in your life!

If you’re one that struggles with this, start deciding what in your life is out of your control. Take it day by day, and focus on the things you can change, instead of the things you can’t!

Do What’s Right, Not What’s Easy

What’s easy and what’s right can oftentimes go hand-in-hand. These situations are easy to approach knowing that the right thing to do is also going to be the easy thing to do.

The situations that take you doing the right thing when it isn’t always the easiest, now these are the situations where your boldness comes in.

God talks about this in the Bible, over and over again. As a Christian, we will face persecution for the things we say and do. What God wants for us will more times than not differ from what the world wants for us.

Eventually, there comes a choice. How will you know which choice is honoring God and which is for your own benefit? There are several verses that talk about how we can live and decide through godly wisdom.

Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

When you’re stuck at a crossroad, you should ask yourself this question: What would Jesus want me to do? Think of the best possible way you could honor him.

Not just in what you do, but in what you say. In word and in deed, we should always think of how Jesus would respond to the situation. It can be hard to go out of your way to apologize to someone that doesn’t deserve it, but in the end, what’s right is showing mercy and grace to those who most definitely don’t deserve it!

Ephesians 5:15-20 says, “Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

God makes it very clear to us in the Bible that our days are numbered. We never know how many more opportunities we have to display the light and love of God through our lives.

If making the most of every opportunity means showing kindness and love in every situation, then we should do just that. Just because it’s not the easiest thing to do, doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do.

I once saw a quote that puts it perfectly: “Keep a good attitude and do the right thing even when it’s hard. When you do that you are passing the test. And God promises you your marked moments are on their way.”

Think of life as a time filled with many tests. We should want God to be proud of our actions and who we are when the world isn’t looking.

So, do good, be good, and spread goodness. At the end of the day, people will remember the times you did the right thing instead of the easy thing, every single time.

Being a follower of God isn’t supposed to be easy, that’s why God calls us to a life so much greater than this. Listen to his word and his wisdom and apply it to your life. You’ll feel content, rewarded, and an all-around better person at the end of the day!

Being thankful is a year-round job, not just a thing we do around Thanksgiving. Actually, it has been scientifically proven that being thankful has health benefits! Gratitude is something that we all can show every day. Showing others that we are grateful for them makes us happier, improves our relationships, productivity, health, and even our sleep! Here are 10 ways that having an attitude of gratitude can benefit you.

  1. Sleep: My favorite! By writing down a few grateful thoughts before bed, your stress levels are reduced and your relaxation response is triggered.
  2. Emotions: Being grateful reduces toxic emotions like rage, regret, and frustration. It reduces feelings of envy and makes our experiences happier and also helps us recover from stress!
  3. Relationships: Showing others you are grateful for them helps boost your friendships. Showing others kindness by doing things like holding the door and saying thank you makes you feel good inside as well as shows others you care. People want to be around people like that!
  4. Self-esteem: We perform better and act better when we are confident and happy. Gratitude reduces our feeling of jealousy because instead of feeling jealous or resentful about what other people have, we are grateful for what we have and are able to appreciate other people’s accomplishments.

Having an attitude of gratitude can really change your outlook on life and brighten it! An easy way to get in the habit of being thankful is to keep a gratitude journal. Simply write down 3 things you are grateful for as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed. It can be things as simple as the sunshine, or even a great score on a test. Train your mind to default to positivity. It will change your life.

Get Your Hopes Up: Expect Good, Receive Good!

Life is full of ups and downs.  When life gives you bad days, we have the choice of reacting positively or negatively.  Ultimately, it’s hard to be in positive spirits all the time, I’ve even struggled with this a lot recently!  God has revealed some things to me in the past couple months that may help you get your hopes back up as well!

First off, expect the best out of each day and be confident!  If you wake up expecting a great day, then you’ll seek out the positives instead of the negatives in each situation.  I know from experience that when I’m optimistic about the day ahead, the good usually outshines the bad!  Being confident also plays a part in expecting the good.  When you go into your day with a confident mindset, you won’t let anything get in your way!Chelsea Crockett - Hopes Up Quote

Getting your hopes up is often seen as a bad thing.  For some situations, it can be.  But other times, being positive and thinking optimistically can change your perception on your whole day or other situations!  In the past, I’ve let little things get me down.  Now and in the future, I hope to shape the way I think which will shape the way I act and feel!

The quote on the right is one I live by.  Knowing that your best days are still in front of you will give you an overall positive outlook on life for now and the days yet to come!

As the saying goes, “You get more out of sugar than you do out of vinegar.”  Translation: you get more out of being nice to people than being mean to them.  It’s true!  Being nice really does pay off!  It’s easy to turn the other cheek to people you don’t like, but in the long run, you’ll never regret the times you were nice to someone.

People come and go in your life, but you never know when you may run into someone again.  That boy you were mean to in high school?  He could be your dentist one day.  That nerd you didn’t speak to?  She might be one of your children’s college professors.  Running into your past is just a fact of life!  That’s why it is important to be nice to everyone.  Although it can be tough, make it a challenge to smile to someone new each day or strike up a conversation with someone you may not have the best relationship with.

Being nice to someone that you don’t like isn’t being fake; it’s called growing up and being mature.  Always try and be the bigger person.  Who knows what that’ll get you!  I promise you will go far in life if you treat others the right way.  It might just help you on your road to success in school, athletics, or your future career.Chelsea Crockett- nice quote

Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude

Hey insiders!
I hope your day started off with many blessings!  I know our lives are filled with too many blessings to count.  Even when we are going through tough times, I try to think of everything I’m thankful for.  After all, if you can see, hear, feel, eat, sleep, drink, and breathe, then you already have seven things to thank God for.  So many people are suffering from illnesses or abuse of
many kinds.  Therefore, I try to find the good in all situations! Chelsea Crockett - Thankfulness
Sometimes I complain and focus on the negatives.  But if I take a step back, I realize there are too many things to be thankful for and that complaining isn’t a way to thank God at all.  Literally, the list is endless.  To start off  write down 20 things you are thankful for.  Throughout each week, continue to list off every blessing you find throughout the days.
An attitude of gratitude is what creates joy and peace.  Fault finding, complaining, and grumbling are not very appealing.  Don’t you want to surround yourself with thankfulness, peace, and joy?  Well, the good news is you can!  Thanksgiving, praise, and gratitude are so powerful.  Give it a try!  Spend some time focusing on everything good in your life.  You might be
surprised at what you will find!
XOXO, Chelsea
