You Can’t Change People, But God Can

Odds are, you have someone in your life who really needs to change. They have an anger problem, a sin problem, an addiction problem, an attitude problem, or maybe even a denial problem. And you don’t know how to help them overcome their struggle or the sin that has held them down for so long. Fed up, tired, and hopeless because you have tried and tried, but somehow nothing has changed. You come to grips with the fact that they may never change, and that they may always be the way they are. I mean, what are you supposed to do in a situation like that?

Lucky for us, the Bible gives us wisdom on how to actually help a person change. So, how can you help a person change?

Pray repeatedly. Somehow we get this unbiblical idea in our heads that we can change people and by the force of our sheer will, we can make a person turn from their ungodliness to godliness. Scripture says differently. James 1:19-10 says “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” The hard truth is that we cannot cause a person to change, no matter how hard we try. Only God can soften their heart and open their ears. The best thing we can do for a person is pray for them, and not in a “God please change this person because they are driving me crazy” kind of way, but in a “God please change this person for their good and your glory” kind of way. Pray for them constantly. Pray that God would bless them, give them joy, and give them victory over their sin. Also, instead of criticizing the person you want to change, pray for them. For every one time you criticize, pray ten times!

Encourage them often. This may sound counterproductive because if I encourage them, they will think everthing is okay, right? That isnt how it works. The authors of the Bible made this evident. Before they brought any criticism, they always began with encouragement. The way Paul responded to the Corinthians is a great example of this. The Corinthian church was going nuts. They were all engaging in sexual immorality, worshiping other Gods, making idols, and many other sinful things. But, Paul began his letter to the Corinthians by telling them how grateful he was for them. “I give thanks to my God always for you..” are his words exactly. Do you want to help a person change? Give thanks to God for them. Encourage them and point out areas where you see God at work in their life. Don’t fixate on their weaknesses and miss all the good things God is doing in them.

Correct them lovingly. There is a time for correction, but that correction should be when necessary. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 says “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” Sometimes our corrections can take the form of admonishment or rebuke. Sometimes they can take the form of helping someone in their weakness. But always correct with patience and love, not anger and frustration.

So, how do we help people truly change? Pray, encourage, correct, and repeat. Don’t try and make people change, persistently pray for them and let God do the changing.

How God Shows Us He is In Control

As most of you know, this last year has been a year of change for me. I went from going to high school, to going away to college, to realizing that wasn’t where I was meant to be and moved back home. There has also been a ton going on in the midst of all of those changes, so needless to say it has been a nuts year. I saw a quote the other day that spoke right to my situation, and it said “The only way God can show us He’s in control is to put us in situations we can’t control.”how god shows us he is in control

How true is that? In my life, it is painfully true. God doesn’t call us to a comfortable life of contentment, he calls us to do things that take us out of our comfort zone. If you are in a situation where you feel like your life is out of control and it isn’t going the way you planned, just remember that the only way God can show us He is in control is to put us in situations we can’t control. He will pull you out of the situation and will show you that he’s got the whole thing covered.

Embracing Change: Things I’ve Learned Throughout High School

Change is scary. It can be good or bad, hard or easy, little or life-changing… Since I’m graduating high school this year, I’m expecting a lot of change within the next few months. Throughout high school, I’ve learned some valuable lessons that can help me in the next chapter of my life and simply life in general. Hopefully they can be of use to you, too!

As a senior, I’ve seen myself change in ways I didn’t think I would. I’ve realized one of my big mottos throughout the years was always “Everything happens for a reason.” Chelsea Crockett - Change QuoteAlthough that quote may be a little cliché, I’ve always trusted God’s plan in knowing that whatever happens is supposed to. With recent college decisions, I’ve had to accept and trust different aspects of the future. I’ve prayed for guidance and confidence, and God has shown me the way every time.

Another thing I always remind myself of is to surround myself with good people. My friends throughout my high school career have changed from time to time, but my best friends today have always been there for me. It is so so important to surround yourself with people who are encouraging, trustworthy, and have a good sense of humor :). They make change easier by always having your back!

My favorite verse of the Bible, as you all know, is Jeremiah 29:11. It says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” These are good words to trust full heartedly when embracing change, whether it be big or small!

It’s easy to stay in your comfort zone. Taking a leap of faith, changing something in your life, or going to a faraway land can be very scary! Many don’t realize that taking these chances can be the best decision of your life. I always wonder what life would be like if I didn’t decide to start my channel. It’s hard to even imagine! I’m so thankful for the chances that I’ve taken. It’s time that we all scare ourselves a little!Chelsea Crockett- If your dreams don't scare you they're not big enough

Do you ever find yourself stuck in the same old routine? Do you have big dreams that seem unachievable? Side note: They’re not! One of my favorite quotes is, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.” Change is scary, but how can you grow if you don’t welcome change? Scare yourself by traveling across the ocean, changing up your look, or taking on a job or task that seems too big to handle. The result will surprise you. Not only will you believe in yourself more, but you’ll have the confidence to take on even bigger challenges! I never thought I’d be making YouTube videos for millions of people, but it’s given me the drive to try bigger things. I promise: if you scare yourself, the end result will change you (in a good way, of course)!

Change It Up: School Uniforms

Hi Lovelies,

So I’m sure that many of you have school uniforms, especially if you go to a private school.  Even public schools have restrictions on what you can wear.  Sometimes it can be hard to show your individuality and express yourself through your fashion and style in a school setting.  I’ll give you a quick guide to bring your own style to school, without breaking dress code.

  • Have fun school accessories!  A fun backpack is a stylish way to carry your books.  Pick up a fun colored or printed backpack, like cheetah and carry your books in style!  It’ll also add a pop of color to even the dullest outfit.
  • Throw on an awesome pair of shoes!  Sandals and boots are my favorite shoes around.  They come in every style and color and some are even “blinged” out.  Everyone will be impressed with your new kicks!
  • Bling yourself out!  Don’t be afraid to throw on a pretty necklace and some crazy earrings to dress up your dull school uniform.  You canChelsea Crockett- backpack never go wrong with jewelry!

Throwing on a scarf can add a pop of color too!

I hope this little guide will help you bring your own individual style to a school uniform.  Remember, don’t break school code, but have fun with your style!

XOXO,

            Chelsea
