Nyctophilia (n): An attraction to darkness or night; finding relaxation or comfort in the darkness.

Do you ever experience Nyctophilia? Maybe it sounds something like this: You know what you’re doing isn’t right, but it’s comfortable. So instead of changing your actions of lifestyle, you remain in this “darkness” that the world offers, instead of looking up to God for change or direction.

We’ve all done it from time to time. We stay with the things that are familiar and comfortable because we’re too scared to take the next step.

This is when we fall victim to Nyctophilia. Instead of taking a step forward, we remain where we’re at due to fear and the “what ifs.” This keeps us doing the things we’re comfortable with, the things that cause us to turn away or ignore God.

1 John 2:15 says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.”

God understands the appeal of the world and the easiness of it. It’s easy to do what everyone else is doing and to desire those things, as well. But our actions are the reflection of what we stand for and what we believe in. So, like the verse says, when we show love for the world more than we show love for our heavenly Father, God’s light cannot shine through within us.

Titus 2:11-12 says, “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”

The grace of God extends with no limit. It covers our past sins, our present sins, and even the sins we haven’t committed yet. When we seek the darkness of the world and everything it has to offer, God gives us his perfect gift of grace. But just because God is merciful to us doesn’t mean we should use this as an excuse, continuing to seek the ways of the world and proceed happily in our bad habits.

It’s okay to desire comfort and ease, but the moment it keeps you from making a positive change or taking a step in the right direction, it becomes a problem. God wants us to be comfortable and relaxed, but in his way. His way is much more satisfying. It’s eternal, joyful, merciful, and so much more.

I urge you to step out of your Nyctophilia at least once this week. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but pick something you can work on in your life for the better. Maybe for you it’s gossiping, jealousy, anger, your desires, etc. Whatever it may be, try using that time spent on those actions, thoughts, or emotions, and spend it on your spiritual life.

Instead of being jealous or angry toward someone, simply start talking to God. Ask him for help and guidance on how you can change your darkness into light! 🙂

Hi Insiders,

Summer shoes are probably the cutest around.  Sandals, wedges, and flip flops come in every color and print imaginable.  Unfortunately, these super cute shoes can also be super uncomfortable.  When walking on your feet for hours at a time, maybe on vacation or shopping, these shoe choices probably aren’t the best.  Surprisingly, footwear can be both comfortable and trendy.  I’m going to introduce you to cute, yet comfortable, summer shoe wear.Chelsea Crockett- comforable summer shoes

Many flip flops and sandals only have a small layer of foam or leather on the bottom.  This gives your foot no arch support and hardly enough cushion to keep you on your feet all day long.  The perfect substitution to this problem is Sperry’s.  This adorable boat shoe comes in many different colors and styles and can be worn year round.  Some have mesh in and around the sides to keep your feet cool during the summer.  They also have a cushioned arch support to keep you moving all day long.  Sperry also carries a variety of flip flops that, although pricey, are completely worth it.  Another great brand of comfortable summer shoes is TOMS.  This shoe company donates a pair of shoes to a child in need with every purchase.  Not only will your feet be feeling good, with its built in arch support and cool design, but you will also feel good about yourself!  Check out the links below to purchase a pair of these awesome summer shoes.  Enjoy!

Love,

            Hey girls!

In the November issue of Teen Vogue, Demi Lovato talks about how she is stronger than ever and how she couldn’t be happier with the skin she’s in.  This is a perfect example of someone we should look up to, especially in our teen years.  Being comfortable and confident in your own skin is one of the very secrets of finding the person you want to be!

Self-esteem is hard to keep upChelsea Crockett - Confidence at the age we’re at, and going to school doesn’t help.  There’s always someone that has something negative to say about you whether they’re judging your clothes, personality, friends, etc.  Feeling right in your own skin is the first step to ignoring negativity from others.  Don’t be a people pleaser!  You can’t make everyone happy so don’t try so hard.  God made you in His image, so you should be overjoyed with the skin you’re in!

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”  Psalm 139:13-14
