Do you ever hang out with someone and eventually find yourself talking and acting like they do?
It could be in the simplest ways like catching onto their unique phrases or picking up on certain mannerisms. Regardless, in the littlest ways we start to become the people we surround ourselves with.
In high school, when I would hang out with girls that gossiped and indulged themselves in drama, I started to do the same. I’d catch myself participating in conversations I had no business participating in.
Throughout my life, I’d have friends that constantly brought me down and continuously brought negativity to every situation. I noticed that bad moods are contagious, and moodiness can have a domino effect.
God encourages his followers to pick their “teammates” wisely. Choose the people who are going to make you enjoy life and spur you on to be a better follower of Christ.
This verse puts it perfectly.
Proverbs 13:20 says, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”
I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this firsthand. When we surround ourselves with those who are wise and have a good head on their shoulders, we are influenced for the better. When we surround ourselves with those who’re foolish, we are more likely to stumble and fall off our path.
Booker T. Washington said it best: “Associate yourself with people of good quality, for it is better to be alone than in bad company.”
God didn’t create us to be alone. He wants us to have fellowship with other believers more than anything! When you find people that click with you and encourage you to be a better person, that’s when you know you’ve found good people to surround yourself with.
You should have a good balance of people around you who are a positive influence on you and people who you can be a positive influence on them. As much as we want to be around people who make us a better person, we should also be that person for others who need a good influence!
Lastly, take a look at Hebrews 10:24. It says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…”
Everyone in your group of friends should be responsible for spurring one another on. God tells us to do it, and encourages us to be the change we want to see in others. Motivate each other toward love and doing good things for others. It takes one person to make a difference, and the rest will soon follow!
Choose your team carefully. Surround yourself with people that reflect who you want to be and how you want to feel. Surround yourself with people who have contagious positivity and encouragement.
Surround yourself with people that make you fall in love with God even more. These are the people that are going to help YOU become a better person in all areas of your life.
