When you sit down to pray, have you ever hesitated because you don’t know where to start? Whether you’re lost, ashamed, or simply don’t know what to say, God is…
When you sit down to pray, have you ever hesitated because you don’t know where to start? Whether you’re lost, ashamed, or simply don’t know what to say, God is longing for you to talk to him. And it’s okay if you don’t know where to begin!
I’ve been lost for words from time to time, as well. What do I say? What do I ask God for? What do I confess to him? It can be hard to find the right words to say.
It’s never too late to begin your prayer life. A consistent, open, vulnerable prayer life is so important to build a firm foundation for your relationship with God. He isn’t someone you have to put up a front with. Instead, you can be your truest self with the Lord, which I think is the sweetest thing!
Jeremiah 29:12 says, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”
First, go to God. Go to a quiet place where you can spend devoted, uninterrupted time with the Lord. Somewhere where you can truly focus on what you want to say to or ask God. He longs for this time with you and it’s incredible that we get the opportunity to do so!
People can often have a misconception of prayer. They think you have to know exactly what to say and exactly when to say it, but this is so far from the truth! God wants a relationship where we can be open, honest, and transparent with him, where he is more of a friend than a distant, unfamiliar relative.
If you don’t know what to say, start with prayers from the Bible, from online, from your church… There are so many prewritten prayers that you can make your own and fit to your needs. It’s the perfect place to start!
Ephesians 6:18 says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”
Your prayer life doesn’t have to be complicated. Pray when you’re upset, overjoyed, anxious… There are no limits to God! He can help you through any and every situation, even if you think your struggles are too big. They are never too big for God!
Sometimes we catch ourselves only talking to God when we need something from him. I encourage you to pray in times of joy and happiness, not just when you need to ask God for something. When we talk to God and solely send up praises to him, it builds a stronger relationship. You feel more connected and more willing to go to him in times of both joy and sadness.
It’s okay to not always know where to start. Just remember that God wants to talk to you always. Don’t be afraid to sit down and tell him what’s on your mind! He cherishes these honest, open moments with us more than we know. 🙂
