You Can’t Change People, But God Can

Odds are, you have someone in your life who really needs to change. They have an anger problem, a sin problem, an addiction problem, an attitude problem, or maybe even a denial problem. And you don’t know how to help them overcome their struggle or the sin that has held them down for so long. Fed up, tired, and hopeless because you have tried and tried, but somehow nothing has changed. You come to grips with the fact that they may never change, and that they may always be the way they are. I mean, what are you supposed to do in a situation like that?

Lucky for us, the Bible gives us wisdom on how to actually help a person change. So, how can you help a person change?

Pray repeatedly. Somehow we get this unbiblical idea in our heads that we can change people and by the force of our sheer will, we can make a person turn from their ungodliness to godliness. Scripture says differently. James 1:19-10 says “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” The hard truth is that we cannot cause a person to change, no matter how hard we try. Only God can soften their heart and open their ears. The best thing we can do for a person is pray for them, and not in a “God please change this person because they are driving me crazy” kind of way, but in a “God please change this person for their good and your glory” kind of way. Pray for them constantly. Pray that God would bless them, give them joy, and give them victory over their sin. Also, instead of criticizing the person you want to change, pray for them. For every one time you criticize, pray ten times!

Encourage them often. This may sound counterproductive because if I encourage them, they will think everthing is okay, right? That isnt how it works. The authors of the Bible made this evident. Before they brought any criticism, they always began with encouragement. The way Paul responded to the Corinthians is a great example of this. The Corinthian church was going nuts. They were all engaging in sexual immorality, worshiping other Gods, making idols, and many other sinful things. But, Paul began his letter to the Corinthians by telling them how grateful he was for them. “I give thanks to my God always for you..” are his words exactly. Do you want to help a person change? Give thanks to God for them. Encourage them and point out areas where you see God at work in their life. Don’t fixate on their weaknesses and miss all the good things God is doing in them.

Correct them lovingly. There is a time for correction, but that correction should be when necessary. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 says “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” Sometimes our corrections can take the form of admonishment or rebuke. Sometimes they can take the form of helping someone in their weakness. But always correct with patience and love, not anger and frustration.

So, how do we help people truly change? Pray, encourage, correct, and repeat. Don’t try and make people change, persistently pray for them and let God do the changing.

XOXO, Chels

Prayer journaling is something that’s become a really big part of my spiritual life.  It’s something that brings me closer to God and has changed my perspective on prayer as a whole.  There are so many things about prayer journaling that I want to tell you about so you can dive into prayer in a whole new way, too!

Chelsea Crockett - Prayer JournalFirst, you’ll need an empty journal with lots of blank pages that are ready to be filled!  I like to start by writing a list of different things I want to start praying for.  Whether it be a friend that’s going through something or a hard test that’s coming up, I write it all down.  Put on paper everything that’s on your mind and everything that needs prayer.

Now comes the best part.  Find a quiet spot where you can be alone with God, just you and him. You can either pick one of those things you put on your list to journal about or just spill out your heart to God, about anything and everything.  These are like your own little love notes to God.  There’s no wrong way to write your out your needs and wants to him.  My favorite part about writing my prayers down is being able to look back at them and see how God has answered my requests.  Watch how he is faithful and see how he answers your prayers when you need him to!

So, what do you think?  Are you going to try it out?  Now that I’ve started, I can’t stop! 🙂

How to Find Your Passion in Life

We all get stuck sometimes. Stuck where we feel like our life is not going the way we thought it would, or it is not really going anywhere at all. Maybe you are in a job that you really don’t like. Or maybe what you are studying in school isn’t turning out to be as great as you thought it would be. In these times it is important to stop and reflect and remember what you are passionate about and what you love in life. This is not as easy as it sounds, but here are a few ways to help you get there.

  1. Be present: It is easy to put yourself on “autopilot” and just go through the motions of every day. One day we will realize that years have passed and we may feel like we have missed out on doing the things we love to do! Start paying attention and living in the present. Take time to notice what is going on and where you are in life.
  2. Pay attention to how you feel: To find your passions and discover what you love in life, you must let yourself feel things. How will you know what you are passionate about if you shut off feelings of joy and appreciation and excitement? Those emotions can be hard to let ourselves feel because we think that if we let them in, they will probably lead to disappointment. Not always the case.
  3. Learn to put yourself first sometimes: It is important to think about others, but it is also important to give yourself value as well. Finding your passion is about finding yourself, so learn to put yourself first when you need to.
  4. Take pride in your accomplishments and your abilities: Realize what you are good at it, and don’t minimize it. Be proud of it! Find out who you are and what you are good at by “dating yourself.” Ask yourself questions like you were on a date with yourself and were wanting to get to know you. This will help you realize your skills and talents. Brag on yourself a bit!
  5. Write it all down and reflect: Keep track of your thoughts from #4. Write down what you have learned about yourself and use that to help you find what you are passionate about and what you love in life.

And lastly, pray about it! God will reveal to you what you seek if you ask Him, and He will do it when He knows the time is right. Finding your passion can give you so much joy and fulfillment! When you are doing the things you love, life is good. When I realized that my passion was speaking to others about Christ and giving advice, it changed my life.

5 Ways to Know If Something Is from God

Everything comes from God and everything can be credited back to the creator of the universe.  The sky, the ocean, our family, our house… these are just a few examples of the many things God has so graciously given us.  But other things, the not so good and the not so desired, can be hard to know if they’re actually from God.  Here are 5 ways to know if something is from God!

  • Simply ask. Pray. There is so much more power in prayer than we realize. Ask God to reveal to your heart whatever it is you’re struggling with.  You will hear God’s tiny whispers that can reveal so much more than you thought prayer could!
  • Look into scripture. Without even realizing it, some of the answers you’re searching for can be written directly into scripture.  Even simply googling “What does the Bible say about _____” can give you answers that are guaranteed to be from God since they’re written in His word!
  • Ask someone more knowledgeable about the topic. If you have a spiritual leader in your life, ask them for their own opinion.  Sometimes all we need is someone else’s input to see what we’re missing.
  • Be patient. Patience is key!  I can’t stress this enough.  Maybe God doesn’t want you to know right away what he’s doing in your life.  Be still!
  • Trust that God has your best interest. Sometimes we don’t always want what God has placed in our life, but I assure you it’s something God knows we need.

I hope this helps you in times of confusion and frustration.  Remember that every good and perfect gift comes from God!

Love, Chelsea

I think peace is something we all could use a little more of.  Whether you’re in a stressful season in your life, going through a tough break-up, or even just feeling anxious, praying for peace can make a world of a difference.  When I sit down to pray, it’s sometimes hard to find the right words to say.  If you have this problem at times too, here are 5 ways to pray for peace!

  1. Pray for trust.Chelsea Crockett - Peace  Trust is something I think we all struggle with at times.  Praying for trust will take away any anxiety or stress you may be having because you’ll start to truly believe that God has a plan for each of us.
  2. Pray for strength.  Having the strength to get through any situation will help you through all seasons of your life.  If you have the strength to get through one low of your life, you can get through them all!
  3. Pray to hear God’s voice.  God’s voice is real and present, and you will hear it if you listen.  Pray to hear what God is trying to tell you and you may find the direction that you’ve been searching for.
  4. Pray one day at a time.  Taking things one day at a time really does make a huge difference.  Start the day with a prayer to give you strength and trust for the day ahead!
  5. Pray for patience.  Patience is a virtue, and if you can learn to be still and patient, you will gain more peace than you could’ve imagined.

I hope this helps bring back some peace into your life.  God is good and He’ll listen to your prayers!

When crisis hits, what is your first reaction? Is it panic? Anger? Mine is worry. I worry about what is going to happen next and what the future holds. When my worries start to get the best of me, I remember Philippians 4:6.

Philippians 4:6 says “Don’t worry about anything: Instead pray about everything.” What good can worrying do? It can only make you worry
more. Instead of wasting time, energy and emotion worrying, pray about it! God promises to hear your prayers, plus letting it go and letting God handle it takes a huge weight off of your chest. It is amazing what amazing things God can do in your life when you just let go and pray.

I have started keeping a prayer journal and writing my daily prayers in it. It is a great way to look back and see how God worked in your life through your prayers! Remember, don’t worry about anything, instead pray about everything.

I always love finding new ways to read and study my Bible.  Starting my day off with a devotional and a little Jesus time is my favorite thing to do in the morning!  I found a new three-part devotional that focuses on a different psalm every day and allows you to create a small prayer out of each one.  The three R’s stand for rejoice, repent, and request.  Start by picking a psalm and reading it a few times through!Chelsea Crockett - Psalm Devotion

  • Rejoice.  First comes first, you’re going to pick out the parts of the psalm that revolve around gratefulness and rejoicing.  Write down all of the different blessings that we can be grateful for and what we can lift up to God in thankfulness!
  • Repent.  Throughout each psalm, there are usually lines that talk about sin and things that we, as sinners, fall short of.  Write down all of the things we need to repent for whether it be gossip, judgement, etc.
  • Request.  Take what you wrote down for the last two R’s and turn them into requests to God.  What do you want Him to help you with?  How do you want to learn from these things?  This will turn into a mini prayer!

After you have your list, pray what you wrote down.  Rejoice in the good things, repent your sins, and send up your requests to God.  Try it out! 🙂

We’re in the generation of wanting things at the snap of our fingers, right when we ask for it.  We often find it hard to trust that God’s plan is perfect and think that ours may be better in the long run.  It can sometimes get frustrating when we have to wait and be patient.  It may even start to feel like the wait is too much to bear.  Luckily, God gives us His word to help us turn to when we’re in need of patience!Chelsea Crockett - Patience Bible Verse

Proverbs 14:29 says, “Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.”  In this verse, God is telling us to be slow to anger.  We often get so frustrated when God doesn’t answer our prayers right away, or even at all.  We need to pray for understanding and self-control.  If you can’t change the outcome, change the perspective!

Ephesians 4:2 says, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”  This verse is a perfect verse to reflect on when struggling with patience with other people.  Be humble and kind, having love for even those who hurt and persecute you!

2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”  This is one of my favorite verses about patience.  God is never slow or absent, He is simply fulfilling His will for you (and His plan is perfect!)!  He is patient with us as we should be with Him!

I urge you all to pray for patience.  It will change your perspective and give you peace in all situations.

We all have bad days. Whether it’s something as little as a bad grade or something a lot bigger, you may start to feel far from God. Sometimes you lose faith or don’t have the time to grow and build your relationship with Christ. It can be frustrating and confusing but we’ve all been there. I came up with a few tips to turn your bad days to good days :).

  • Set apart some alone time to spend with God. Chelsea Crockett - God QuoteIf we never spend time with our friends and family, we will slowly grow apart from them. It’s the same thing with God! Never having some quiet time to listen for what God is trying to tell you will result in farness from God and His plan.
  • Pray, pray, pray. Prayer is powerful! Speaking to God one-on-one will strengthen your relationship with Him.
  • Text a friend from church, a youth leader, etc. If you have a church family that you can rely on, use that to your advantage! If you can’t talk and pray with someone in your family, seek advice from a fellow Christian.
  • Go to church. What’s a better place to get closer to God than being surrounded by good fellowship and the Word?
  • Listen to Christian music. I know when I’m feeling down, I love to listen to my favorite Christian artists. Their songs send very powerful messages that I sometimes need to hear!

I hope these tips help you draw nearer to God and help you remember how much he loves you.

Whether you actually tell them you are or whether you keep it to yourself, praying for your family shows them that you deeply love them and that you care for them. It can bless you as well when you see your prayers for them being answered and when you see how God blesses their life because of your faithfulness! Your prayers can also help bring your family together and strengthen it. Here are 4 ways that you can pray for your family.

Prayer is a powerful thing. Having a solid prayer life is essential in strengthening your faith, and it can get you through the toughest of times. I must confess, when life gets hard I have no problem praying for what I want and need, but when my friends are going through tough times Im not as good about it! The best thing you can do for your friends is pray for them. Here are 4 prayers for your friends and mine.

  1. Jeremiah 17:7-8:Ask that the Lord would bless your friend as she trusts in the Lord. Pray that she would be like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots strong and deep by the stream, and has no need to fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Pray that God would make your friend strong, fruitful, and flourishing for His glory.il_340x270.678591084_c3z7
  2. Numbers 6:24-26: Pray that the Lord bless your friend and keep her; that He would make his face to shine upon her and be gracious to her; that the Lord would lift up His countenance upon her and give her peace.
  3. Proverbs 3:3-8: Pray that she would trust in the Lord with all his heart, and not lean on her own understanding. Ask that in all her ways she would acknowledge God, and God will make straight your friend’s paths. Entreat the Lord to help your friend not be wise in her own eyes, but to fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
  4. Psalm 138:7-8: Ask that when your friend walks in the midst of trouble, God would preserve her life. Claim His promise to stretch out His hand against the wrath of your friend’s enemies, to deliver her with His right hand. Remind God of His commitment to fulfill His purpose for your friend, and of His steadfast and endless love for her.

I hope my friends pray these prayers over me from time to time as well. What an encouragement to know that someone cares about you enough to lift you up in prayer!

Have you ever found yourself in one of those amazing situations where you can’t believe that something just happened!  Imagine this: You had your final English paper due in the morning, but were up all night listening to your parents fight.  You weren’t able to finish the paper, because all of the turmoil in your house.  As you walk into class, prepared to tell the teacher that you didn’t finish, your teacher decides to move the due date.  Amazingly, you have an extra 2 days to finish your paper!  Is this a coincidence?  No, this is God winking at you.Chelsea Crockett- God Wink

A God wink is like a coincidence.  When God sees you’re in need of Him, He delivers.  God really does take care of you when you follow Him.  This is the best part about being a believer!  Think about those times when your grandpa gave you a wink from across the dining room table.  You knew that that was a reminder that he loves you and is thinking about you.  It’s the same with God!  It’s an answered prayer that leaves you speechless.  These God winks are little messages of reassurance that He loves us, cares for us, and will always be there for us.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10

As you might know, I just recently got back from church camp! The week I spent there was totally life changing and brought me so much closer to God. The biggest thing I learned at camp was how important time alone with God is. Time alone with God strengthens your relationship with the Lord and shows Him how much you love Him.

One way to make sure you spend time alone with God every day is to set out a time each day just for devotions or reading your Bible. For you morning people, as soon as you wake up you can make it a point to reach for your Bible or devotional. For you night owls, after you do your nightly routine, climb into bed or find a quiet place to spend some time with God.

Another way to make sure you spend time with Him is to get a devotional that applies to you and interests you. A good devotional for teens is “Email from God” by Claire Cloninger and Curt Cloninge. The daily devotions are set up like they are emails from God to you, so it is super teen friendly!

Matthew 6:6 says “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

The reward God will give you for spending time with Him is not material things, but you will see a positive change in your relationships with your friends and family.

This week, try spending at least 10 minutes alone with God. See how it will change your life!

XOXO, Chels

You can buy “Email from God” here:http://tiny.cc/Email_From_God.  Trust me, you won’t regret it.
