Avoiding Gossip in Today’s World

You walk into class and are immediately overwhelmed by the conversations and gossip going on around you. You try your hardest to not give in, but the conversations are just too tempting. You want to know what’s going on and what everyone’s talking about.

I get it, trust me. I’ve been there too many times. I hate being out of the loop so it’s first instinct to hop right in the conversation and get all the newest details about this or that.

Gossip is such a big part of today’s world. Twitter, Instagram, the news, Snapchat, etc. are filled with the latest drama that we can’t take our eyes off of. Although avoiding this is hard at times, God calls us to be Christ-like, to turn away from these words that tempt us and draw us in.

Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

God not only encourages us to stay away from gossip, but demands it. He tells us to lift others up, not tear them down. If your words aren’t beneficial to those listening, then what’s the point?

Avoiding harmful conversations takes a conscious effort. It’s easy to go with the flow and take part in gossiping with your friends, but it takes true strength to walk away and remove yourself from the situation.

Exodus 23:1 says, “Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a witness.

I always hear people say, “well if it’s true it’s not considered gossip,” and this couldn’t be further from the truth. The more we talk about a situation, the higher the possibility for it to spiral out of control and turn into something it’s not.

Ask yourself these two questions: “Am I going to benefit anyone by spreading what I heard?” “Will anyone gain anything from this conversation, or will it only hurt people in the end?”

It’s important to remember what the Bible says about gossiping. John 13: 24-35 says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Being a follower of Christ revolves around love. Loving your neighbor, loving your friend, loving your enemy… We have a higher calling than simply coexisting with others. We should always be placing love at the top of our priorities, no matter how hard it may be.

This week, make a conscious effort to turn conversations away from gossip, negativity, and tearing others down. It may not be the “cool” thing to do, but it is so worth it in the end. Being the bigger person and pushing love forward in any and every situation is what God wants of all of us. Make a difference in the lives of those around you and live out the Bible each and every day!
