You Can’t Give Anything if You Have Nothing Left to Give

I constantly feel like my time and attention are being pulled a million different ways. I have school work to finish, business work that needs to get done, laundry that needs to be cleaned, finals that I need to study for, friends that I need to keep in touch with, a room to clean, groceries to buy, bills to pay, and then I go to sleep and wake up to do it all over again. I get buried in my “to-do’s” and forget about taking care of myself.

One of my friends recently reminded me that “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. She could see that I was letting my “business” get in the way of my self-care. If you keep living life with the pedal to the metal, trying to squeeze every drop out of each day, you will drain your “cup” and have nothing left to give. If you have nothing left to give, then you can’t do things with excellence. You aren’t doing anyone, or yourself, any good if your cup is drained.

As women, we tend to have difficulty taking time for ourselves and putting ourselves first every so often. We give ourselves to the people we love whole heartedly. Typically, the times when I show myself the most care are when I am sick and forced to do so. Physically and mentally draining yourself just sets you back from your goals. It is a constant cycle of “emptying” and not enough replenishing. When we are stressed out, self-care is one of the first things we put on the back burner.

I know it is hard to give yourself “me” time when you have so many other things that you could be spending your time on. But, remember, you are useless to yourself and others if you are not taking care of yourself. So, try and “treat yo-self” every once and a while. Take a few minutes out of your day to go on a walk. Watch an episode of The Office on Netflix. Go buy yourself a ridiculously overpriced coffee. Put on your favorite outfit. Or, put on your pajamas! Go to sleep early and get at least 8 hours of rest. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself, because you are worth it!

It is so important to take care of ourselves, both physically and mentally. We may feel like we don’t have time for that, but we need to MAKE time for it. If we are mentally or physically unhealthy, it can have a huge impact on how we feel about ourselves and our happiness, and our quality of life. Here are a few easy ways to practice self-care.

Physical:

  • Go for a walk
  • Swim
  • Play with your pets
  • Take a bath
  • Go for a hike
  • Dance around your room like no one is watching

Mental:

  • Read a good book
  • Learn a new skill like drawing or photography
  • Color
  • Put your phone away

Emotional

  • Do some yoga
  • Go on a date
  • Journal
  • Write down everything you are grateful for
  • Talk to a friend

Taking care of ourselves doesn’t have to be a huge burden. Choose a few of the activities above to do a few times a week and you will feel rested, relaxed, and rejuvenated. It’s all about keeping your life balanced!

How to Beat the Mid-Semester Slump

I hear my friends saying “How many more days until school is over?” and I bet you do too. But who can blame them? It is almost half way through the second semester of the school year, and this is what I like to call the “mid-term slump.” It is the part of the year where you feel like you have been in school forevvver and your motivation is seriously lacking. It can even be a bit depressing. Don’t let the slump rule your life, take control! Here are a few ways to overcome it.

  1. Find what isn’t working and change it: If your grades or slipping or you feel like you are losing connection with some of your friends, make a change! Change the way you study, and change the way you stay in touch and stay close to your friends.
  2. Take care of yo-self: When your mind is in 20 different places and when you aren’t feeling motivated, it is easy to put taking care of yourself on the back burner. Don’t do that! Take care of yourself emotionally by writing in a journal or talking to a friend, and take care of yourself physically by taking a study or work break and going on a walk or working out. Keep yourself healthy and feeling good, it will help keep you out of the slump!
  3. Talk to a friend: Let them know how you are feeling. Odds are, they are feeling slump-ish too! Talking about it can help, and you can both try and come up with ways to stay motivated!
  4. Realize it will be over soon: Summer will be here before you know it, I promise. Counting down can sometimes make the time seem like it goes by slower. Quit crossing off the days and just enjoy the moment! These are some of the best days of our lives, so make them count!

Stay far from the slump, you will thank yourself in the long run!

How often do you step back and give yourself some “me” time?  Don’t get me wrong, I love being with my friends and fam, but sometimes it feels good to be independent and spend some time with numero uno. Time alone is a great way to reconnect with yourself, de-stress, and feel refreshed. Here are 5 fun things you can do on your own to treat yo self!

  1. Take yourself on a date: Is there a restaurant where you live that you have always wanted to go to eat but have never gotten the chance? Take yourself! Treat yourself to a nice meal, take as long as you want, order whatever you want, you don’t have anyone to worry about or impress! Bring a good book and enjoy yourself.
  2. Take a loooong bath: Grab a good book, light a few candles, grab some bubble bath and a bath bomb, and hop in the tub. Take the longest bath you want and enjoy uninterrupted bliss.
  3. Lose yourself in a bookstore: There are so many cute bookstores out there, small ones with lots of personality or big ones with lots of choices! Get lost in the shelves and find a book that you love.
  4. Have a spa day: Go get a massage, or save some cash and do an at-home spa day. Grab a face mask and hair mask from Walmart and pamper yourself DIY style.
  5. Complete projects you’ve put off: Speaking of DIY, finish those projects you’ve been putting off so that you don’t have to worry about them anymore. Whether it is finishing homework, updating your resume, finishing a DIY craft, whatever it may be, finish it! You will feel accomplished and productive, plus you reap the benefits of the finished project!

Treat yo-self to some “me” time every once in a while. It is good for the soul!
