5 Ways You Can Hear God’s Voice

God’s voice is hard to hear. It’s not a clear, loud voice that tells you exactly what you need to hear exactly when you need to hear it. It can be both frustrating and disappointing when you expect to hear from God and can’t seem to find him in the midst of your circumstances.

I realized I get let down when I put high expectations on God to give me answers as soon as I ask for them. I forget that God is always in perfect timing and it’s not my place to tell him when and when not to act in my life.

After diving deeper into God’s word, I realized there are so many ways you can hear God’s voice. Instead of sitting around waiting for God to speak to you, look closely at what the Bible says about hearing God’s voice, even if you’re not really hearing it at all.

God’s Word

Have you ever read a verse that described your exact situation or circumstance at the exact time you needed to hear it? These are some of the sweetest moments because we can see, on paper, God speaking to us through his word.  If you think it’s coincidental when you read something spot-on, it’s usually God’s doing. 🙂

His Still Small Voice

I’ve always heard of people hearing God’s still small voice but I never really knew how to listen for it. Have you ever taken the time to simply sit and dwell in the presence of God? Maybe you need to pray for open ears and an open heart to hear him speaking to you. Sometimes we have random thoughts and think, “what did that mean?” or “why would I even think that in the first place?” This is God speaking to you! Don’t overlook it.

Friends and Family

The good thing about having relationships with godly, wise people is that they can give you direction and guidance when you can’t seem to find it yourself. God uses people here on earth to be his messenger even when they don’t know he’s using them. Go to these people for wisdom and advice when you’re lacking guidance.

His Creation

Have you ever looked around and been amazed by God’s creations all around you? Sometimes God sends us subtle messages in the sky, in the trees, through the birds. Sometimes something will remind you that everything’s going to be okay, even if that’s as simple as a sunny day or a bird flying above you.

Peace

Philippians 4:7 says, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

In those moments when you’re stressed, anxious, or afraid, pray to God for his overwhelming peace. In the chaos of it all, God will give you a peace that calms you and fills you with comfort and security. It’s a peace that surrounds you so strongly that you can know whole-heartedly it’s from the Lord.

At the end of the day, don’t feel discouraged when you can’t hear God’s voice when you’ve been praying for it for so long. He could already be speaking to you, you just have to look for it in the not-so-obvious places!

Are you currently in a season of waiting? Are you constantly asking God what’s next?

Consider yourself in the majority. Almost everyone is waiting for something, whether it be their soulmate, a job offer, summer break, etc. Waiting comes with frustration. It comes with wandering thoughts, confusion, and so much more. It’s a hard place to be in and it can have you directing your “whys” to God.

This place of confusion and frustration can leave you feeling alone and far from the Lord. Trust me, I’ve been in this place time and time again. It’s hard to know if God is working on our behalf while we wait for days, months, maybe even years in hopes that He is. If we dig deep into the Bible, we can see that it tells us continually to wait on Him.

The Bible doesn’t just mention this once or twice. It’s talked about in several chapters over many verses. Take a look at this passage in Psalm for example.

Psalm 27:13-14 says, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

Patience always comes first before victory. Wait for the Lord, he says. The Bible never lies, and if it’s telling us to take heart and wait on the one that always delivers, then we should find the patience and confidence to do so.

Oftentimes, we feel so alone. We feel like God has given up on us when things don’t go as planned. One of the most comforting things to know about the Lord is that he is always present in the waiting. Any time I’ve felt like I’m fighting a battle alone, it always seems to come full circle and point back to Him.

So many characters in the Bible felt this loneliness when they were waiting on God, too. Take Moses for example. He led the people of Israel for 40 years waiting on God’s promise to be fulfilled. 40 years! He was one of the most patient and trusting men of the Bible. At times, I’m sure Moses got frustrated, faced confusion, and suffered from loneliness, but he remained faithful and saw the result of God’s goodness in the end.

Lamentations 3:25-27 says, “The Lord is good to everyone who trusts in him, So it is best for us to wait in patience – to wait for him to save us – And it is best to learn this patient in our youth.

God knows waiting can be hard. Jesus had to wait for 30 years knowing his life would soon come to an end. If we trust that the Lord is there in the midst of our waiting, he will do more for our life than we could’ve ever imagined!

When you feel alone, talk to God. Tell Him your concerns and ask Him for a patient heart. Whether you hear Him or not, know He is always there in the waiting. Be still and listen for His voice. You may not be as alone as you think you are!

He’s Closer Than We Know

Too many people see God as a distant voice or someone they hear about in church every Sunday. They think of Him as someone to go to in times of need or pain.

There are so many different verses in the Bible that give us more and more hints as to who God really is. From these, we know He is loving, patient, merciful, forgiving, all-knowing, and so many other things.

One of the main things the Bible describes Him as is our father. Matthew 23:9 says, “…for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.” He cares for us endlessly and is the perfect example of how a father should be.

The Bible also describes Him as our friend:

John 15:13-15 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends…”

Although these are the words of Jesus, God is the same. We can draw close to him and become a true friend of God!

So, how can we make God our best friend?

Talk to him.

When you have exciting news, sudden problems, or an urgent need, talk to him.

You don’t get closer to someone by just interacting with them when it’s convenient for you or solely when you feel like it. Every good relationship requires a conscious effort to communicate and make time for each other.

When we stand at the gates of heaven, we want God to know us. Not just recognize us, but really know who we are and every little detail about our lives.

Think of it this way: Consider one of your best friends. Do you talk to them every day? Or only when you need something? Do you make an effort to learn more about their life and spend time with them? Or just use them to be a listening ear?

This is a perfect example of how we should be with God! If we truly think of him as our provider, creator, and father, then we should want to be close to him!

He’s not this big scary far-away voice. He’s here and he wants to be there for you.

Psalm 145:18 says, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”

If we seek him, he will draw near.  People try to make a relationship with God so complicated, but it’s as simple as drawing near and building a relationship with Him!

All it takes as an intentional first step to do so. Wherever you are reading this, take 5 minutes to talk to God. It’s an easy start but it’s the beginning of an even closer walk with God than you could imagine!

Draw near to Him and watch an amazing relationship come from it.
