“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” – 1 Timothy 4:12
When you are a young person in the spotlight, there is a lot of pressure on your shoulders. I have done a lot in my young age, from starting a business to making big life moves to getting engaged. And, as a young blogger trying to be a positive influence on all those I meet, I think this verse is so important.
When you accomplish many things in your youth, people tend to doubt you or discredit you because you are young. But, this verse is an awesome encouragement – telling us that in His eyes and through Him, we can do amazing things.
Have you ever heard someone give the excuse “Oh, well, they ARE a millennial,” when a young person does something they don’t necessarily agree with? Today’s youth get a bad name. They’re seen as lazy, grumpy and self-centered, when this couldn’t be further from the truth. Some of the smartest and most aware individuals are people in my circle of friends.
In this verse, Paul is writing to Timothy and encouraging him as a young leader in the church. He says that although he is younger than the others, he should not let them look down on him because of it, and that he should set an example for others no matter his age. This same principal applies to us today. Although we are young, we cannot let this stop us from setting an example for others by living for Christ.
Why not let our youth be a strength instead of a stereotype? Help that elderly lady figure out how to use an app on her phone when you see her struggling. Help a mom open the door to a restaurant when she is trying to wrangle her children. Pick up after someone who leaves their trash out. Be someone who brightens someone’s day and reflects the joy of the Lord. Also, don’t let anyone discredit you or make you feel like what you say or feel is wrong because you are young or seem to have less life experience.
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young. Use the knowledge and wisdom that the Lord has blessed you with to show the older generation what millennials really look like.
We are the future, so let’s show ‘em what we got!
