If you’re still in high school, you may be unfamiliar with the term “formal.”  Formals are kind of like the college version of a homecoming dance put on by a fraternity or sorority!  If you’re new to the college world and need some advice on an upcoming spring formal, here are some tips and pointers!

  • You don’t have to have a date in order to go to formal. Chelsea Crockett - Romper More girls go solo than you think.  Get dressed up, grab a group of friends, and go have fun by yourself!
  • Although you should dress up, dresses aren’t a must.  You can rock a fancy romper and heels (such as the picture on the right) or a stylish jumpsuit.  Unlike high school homecomings, you’ll see tight and loose dresses, dresses and rompers, wedges and heels, etc.
  • Don’t be afraid to hit the dance floor.  Unlike high school dances where it can sometimes be awkward to dance, most people will be dancing at formal!  No one cares what you look like or whether or not you have a date.  Get out of your chairs and dance like crazy!
  • You can make plans before and after just like you did for high school dances.  Get ready with your friends beforehand, make dinner reservations, and host an afterparty!
  • Formals are a lot more laid back, and a lot less stressful, than prom and homecoming.  Like I said, you don’t have to bring a date or make a day full of plans surrounding the event.  Just simply have fun!

Have fun at your formal and make lots and lots of memories! 🙂

I have been traveling around a lot lately promoting my new book (YAY!), and I’ve noticed it is taking a toll on my fitness regimen. I like to workout and make it a point to exercise during the week, but my travels have thrown me off of my groove! I want to stay in shape while I travel, but sometimes hotels don’t have gyms or there is no equipment available. That is when it is important to have a workout like the one below up your sleeve! Here is a full body workout, no weights required.

50 jumping jacks

10 burpees

40 Russian twists

10 crunches

10 lunges (on each leg)

10 wide leg squats

30 vertical leg crunches

30 jumping jacks

10 tricep dips

10 squat jumps

10 pushups

25 bicycle crunches

50 jumping jacks

1 minute wall sit

Repeat 2-3 times

I guarantee if you do that two or three times in a row you will feel like you got a 5 star workout in. You didn’t even need to pick up a single weight!

If you are wearing a backless dress or a dress with some back showing for prom, then listen up! Today I am going to give you a few exercises to do that will help get your back toned and tight for prom! A lot of times we skip workout out our back and shoulders because we want to avoid getting “man shoulders” but these exercises aren’t meant to make you bulk up, they’re to tone. Plus, all you need is two dumbbells in your desired weight. I go for 5 pounders.

  1. Dumbbell shrugs: Grab a dumbbell in each hand and hold them down by your sides. Raise your shoulders as high as possible, meaning shrug them, and then lower them. Do these as many times as you want.
  2. Rocking plank: Get into your normal pushup plank position and then roll forward on your toes so they are pointed and flat on the floor. Then roll back to your starting position. The rocking motion is what tones up your back!
  3. Dumbbell front and side raise: This move works both your arms and your back. Score! Hold your dumbbells in both hands with your palms facing down. Make sure to keep your legs shoulder-width apart and to keep your elbows straight. Raise your arms in front of you, then out to the sides. Repeat until it burns!
  4. Side plank: These are great for sculpting your back as well as your side abs! If you don’t know how to do these, it is super simple. Just lay on your side, then push up on your forearm. Do for 30 seconds, then switch sides.

I can’t wait for prom, can you?!

Coachella: one of the world’s largest music festivals in the history of EVER!  I was lucky enough to get to go and experience it myself last year and lemme tell ya… it was incredible!  Since I was a first-timer, I learned some things that I would and wouldn’t do again.  Here are a few Coachella do’s and don’ts!

DO’S

  • Do drink plenty of water!  Since you’ll be in the middle of a 100-degree weather desert, you’re going to get very hot, very fast.  Staying hydrated will keep you refreshed and happy!
  • Do keep your phone plenty charged.  If you ever do get separated from your friends, you’ll need to be able to find them!  You’ll also be taking plenty of pics and videos… I mean, it is Coachella!
  • Do stay well rested and well fed.  You’ll enjoy Coachella 10x more if you have a full stomach and plenty of sleep!

DON’TS

  • Don’t get lost from your friends. Chelsea Crockett - Coachella Outfit In a festival filled with thousands and thousands of people, it’s easy to get separated from your group.  That being said, it can be extremely hard to find them again, especially if your phone service isn’t the greatest.  Stay close to them or have a buddy system!
  • Don’t dress uncomfortably.  Now I know Coachella is known for the stylish festival outfits, but you can be both cute and comfy such as the picture on the right!  You’ll be outside in the sun and walking around all day so dress accordingly (especially with the right shoes!).
  • Don’t last-minute plan.  It’s one of the biggest, and not to mention most crowded, festivals of the year… PLAN AHEAD!

Coachella will be one of the best experiences of your life, hands down!  Have fun and take these do’s and don’ts into consideration!

The Bible is full of many, many things.  It’s full of wisdom, encouragement, lessons, and lots of other valuable things to apply to your life.  I recently came across an article on Pinterest that had a list of “Bible emergency numbers” that apply to specific problems and struggles you might be going through.  Here are some key verses that can help!

  • For when you’re upset – John 14:1-4. Chelsea Crockett - Bible These verses focus on God’s perfect kingdom He has awaiting you.  It gives you hope and reassurance that there is so much more to life.  Don’t get upset over the little things!
  • For when you’re lonely – Psalm 23.  This chapter talks about how the Lord is your shepherd and is always with you.  It gives you comfort knowing that God is with you all the days of your life!
  • For when you’re anxious – Philippians 4:4-9.  Anxiety is a thing that everyone gets.  Whether it’s over a test or a sticky situation, give all your cares to God!
  • For when you’re depressed – Psalm 27.  This chapter is one of my favorites.  It ends with saying “wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”  There are the best days of your life ahead of you!
  • For when you’re lost – Psalm 73:23-26.  These verses talk about how God will guide you even if your flesh and heart fail you.  Seek His counsel because He has you in the palm of His hand!

I hope these help you beat your struggles one verse at a time!

As teenagers, we still have so much life left to live.  I’ve always wondered how people at the end of their lives feel looking back on their own lives.  Are they filled with happiness?  Or regret and unfulfillment?  I found a post online that listed a few life lessons from an 80-year-old.  I found them inspiring and wanted to share some of them!

  • Look people in the eye.” Chelsea Crockett - Bible verseEye contact is important and the ability to have that is a good quality to have!  It tells people that you’re really interested in the conversation.  This is something our generation needs to learn how to do!
  • “Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.”  I’ve always loved the quote, “be the person you want to meet.”  We should all strive to be the best person we can be!
  • “Make it a habit to do nice things for people who will never find out.” Doing something nice for someone is easy, but doing it without getting any recognition is what we can often struggle with.  Try it sometime!
  • “Loosen up. Relax. Nothing is as important as it first seems.”  I live by this advice!  It is so important to let go of things and know that you’re probably stressing over nothing anyway.
  • “Be bold and courageous.”  There’s a verse in the Bible that says the same thing.  Take risks and get out of your comfort zone!  Life’s too short to let opportunities pass you by.

What lessons have you learned so far throughout your life?  Share with me below!

You may have your weekly exercise routine down to a science, or you may switch it up every day to keep things interesting. For me, variety is key! I love to jog, but it can get repetitive and mundane if that is all you do. Here are a few exercises to help mix up your routine that burn more calories than a 3-mile jog.

  1. Swimming: I know this option isn’t available to everyone, but if you can find a YMCA or gym with a pool you should take advantage! Swimming is so great for you because the resistance of the water gives you a full-body workout.
  2. Jumping rope: Not only is jumping rope fun, it is also a high-energy activity that burns calories quickly. Turn on some tunes and jump rope to the rhythm of the songs!
  3. Rock climbing: There is bound to be a rock climbing gym around where you live, and if not there are usually walls at your local YMCA or even at most college rec centers! Rock climbing creates spikes of intense exercise followed by short breaks, which means it burns mega calories. It is also a huge confidence boost and gives you a sense of pride when you conquer the wall!

If you are looking to mix up your workout routine, try mixing in a few of these fun activities.

When you think of carbs do you automatically think “BAD! DON’T EAT THEM!” If so, then you are not alone. Until recently, I thought all carbs were bad. You will hear diets talk about cutting out carbs or eating less of them. There is actually such a thing as good carbs! Here is a list of good carbs and bad carbs to help you know which are OK to eat and which you should avoid.

Good:

  • Fresh fruits, fresh veggies, beans, peas, whole grains, brown rice, quinoa, pure oats, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, potatoes, walnuts, peanuts, almonds.
  • Why are these good? They are high in fiber, they have natural sugars, low insulin levels, they slow digestion, give you energy, keep you full longer, and help with weight loss.

Bad:

  • Fruit juices, soda, cookies, pasteries, cakes, white bread, white crackers, pasta, chocolate and candy, ice cream, frozen yogurt, potato chips, french fries.
  • Why are these bad? The are refined and processed foods, low fiber, they make you hungry faster, have added sugars, high insulin levels, these carbs convert into fat cells, and cause weight gain.

How come so many of the foods on the bad carbs list are my favorite foods?! This list shows us the foods we should be eating and the foods we should be eating in moderation. Just because a food is on the bad carb list doesn’t mean we can’t have it every once in a while! It just means you need to eat more of the good than the bad. 😊 I am going to try to eat more of the good, and less of the bad. Will you join me?

Why You Should Learn to Love Yourself Before Loving Him

Relationships can be tricky.  At our age, we’re experiencing a crucial time of self-growth, love, and confidence.  When I first started my YouTube channel, I didn’t expect to grow so much, so quickly.  With that growth, I experienced both good and bad feedback, both nice and hurtful comments.  DespiteChelsea Crockett - Love Yourself Quote the negativity, I discovered who I was over the years and have learned a few reasons why you should love yourself before loving someone else!

Self-confidence is a wonderful thing to have, but it can be so hard to attain.  Whenever I feel down or start to doubt myself, I always turn to the Bible for advice.  On the subject of loving myself, I also refer to Psalm 139:14.  It says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful.”  This is a verse that you can always lean on for a little boost! 🙂

As far as the reasons why this factor is so important before starting a relationship, there are many!  I’ve learned from experience that if you are still trying to find who you are as a person, it will be 10x harder when you’re looking to someone else for reassurance.  When you love who you are and are 100% confident with your own values, morals, and beliefs, that’s when you should share your life with another person!  I promise you, you will be so much happier.

Learn to love yourself and you’ll be so happy you did!

Writer’s block is a real struggle.  Sometimes we just can’t find the motivation to get anything done.  I’ve been there, done that, trust me!  It can even happen when I’m editing videos, writing articles, or coming up with Instagram captions!  When you’re struggling with writer’s block, here are a few ideas for regaining your motivation.

  • Allow yourself to take a half-hour or an hour break, more often than you think you need. Chelsea Crockett - Writer's Block This way is proved to be one of the most effective!
  • Take a nap.  Power-naps are a real thing.  Taking anywhere between a 30-60-minute nap can give your brain the energy it needs to think.  Sometimes sleeping really is the answer!
  • If you’re hungry, eat your favorite snack.  I know for me, I love food!  Frustration can often take its toll so eating a light snack can give you a break and a boost.
  • Bring your spirits up.  When I get writer’s block, I often find myself getting frustrated and negative.  Do something that makes you happy!  Whether that be playing with your dog or calling your friend for a few minutes.  Positivity helps!
  • Free write.  Free writing is actually effective!  Sit down, grab a pencil, and write whatever comes to mind.  It may help or it may not, but it’s worth a shot!

I hope these help you next time you’re writing a paper or outlining your speech!

Relationships can be both the best and worst thing.  When you meet the right person, that relationship can be the best thing that happens to you!  But if you meet the wrong person… Yikes!  There are certain things to consider before getting into a relationship.  Consider it a “checklist” to make sure both you and the other person are ready for it!

  • Know your worth.  If you don’t know who you are as a person, you’re going to look to others to define you, especially someone you have a lot of feelings for.  Knowing your worth is important in and out of a relationship, but even more so before you date someone!
  • Make sure you’re over past relationships.  There is nothing worse than getting into a relationship without being over your last one.  This is so important!  Don’t allow anyone to be your “rebound.”Chelsea Crockett - Dating Quote
  • Talk about your morals and values with each other.  Being on the same page is crucial for a successful relationship.  Talk about religion, priorities, etc.
  • Prepare yourself to be fully committed.  If you can’t do this, then you’re not ready to invest your time and feelings into someone.  Don’t waste your time and theirs!
  • If you can’t see yourself possibly marrying the person, then don’t start a relationship with them!  I cannot stress this enough.  If you know you’re not going to end up with them in the long run, don’t waste your time and feelings.

Take these things into account before dating that special person!

What and how you eat during the day can make a huge difference in your workout performance. Fueling your body the wrong way can hinder your performance, but also eating too much before exercise can interfere with your workout goals.

When it comes to eating before exercise, timing is everything. No matter the time of day that you exercise, you need to make sure to plan your workout two to 3 hours after your meal. Too much food before a workout will make you feel sluggish and can lead to stomach aches and
digestion problems. Most experts agree that you should eat a small snack about an hour before you workout to fuel your body, such as a little carbs and a little protein. Even if you workout first thing in the morning, eat a small piece of fruit to fuel your body with the nutrients your workout needs.

Exercising can make you feel energized and healthy, but first you have to fuel your body right!

Well this is it… You’re finally at the home stretch.  As a freshman in high school, I never thought I would’ve actually made it to senior year with only a couple months till the next chapter of my life.  It’s both scary and exciting, but I assure you, there are bigger and better things right around the corner!  I wanted to share with you a few things I wish I would’ve known as a senior about to leave high school for good.

  • Hang out with your family more than you normally do. Chelsea Crockett - High School If you’re planning on going away to college, soak up all the family time you can get.  Ask your mom to go shopping with you or take your little sister out to lunch!
  • Appreciate your teachers, whether you want to or not.  They got you to where you are today!  Don’t hesitate to thank them by shooting them a heartfelt email.
  • Don’t let senioritis take its toll.  Senioritis is real, lemme tell ya, but I urge you to stay on top of your grades and make your last couple of months count!
  • Go to every sports game.  Participate in every student section.  Some of my best high school memories happened while I cheered on my school’s team with all of my best friends.
  • Don’t put your life on hold because of homework and studying.  With only a couple months of high school left, keep good grades but don’t miss out on life because of school.  Go to dinner with your friends or go for a night drive in the middle of the week with your boyfriend!  Make all the memories you can!

Make the most out of however long you have left in high school!

Love, Chelsea
