So much of what we do revolves around our phones.  What we post on Instagram, knowing what the temperature is outside, and getting directions somewhere are just a few things we rely on our phones for!  If you find yourself constantly wanting to check or be on your phone, follow some of these tips to break your cell phone habit!

  • It’s sad to say most of us won’t go to sleep without checking our phones.  Put your phone in another room!  If you rely on it for your alarm, then put it out of reach so you’ll still wake up but not be tempted into checking it.
  • Pick two hours a day to go without your phone. Chelsea Crockett - Phone Meme I know I easily get distracted by checking social medias or watching YouTube videos on my phone.  Turn it off for an hour or two and work on homework, clean your room, or go for a run!
  • Set in on “do not disturb.”  A lot of times I can’t get off my phone because I’m constantly getting notifications from social media, group chats, etc.  Putting your phone on “do not disturb” means you still get the notifications without them popping up on your screen every two seconds!
  • Don’t check your phone first thing in the morning.  After a while, it becomes habit to check your emails, social medias, etc. as soon as your alarm goes off.  Studies show that automatically waking up to sit on your phone for a half hour is a bad start to your day and can cause added stress or anxiety!

Being as busy as I am, and as most high school students are, sleep is a hot commodity! I don’t get much of it. I’m always open to finding new ways to get the most out of the shuteye that I DO get, and I found a few useful phone aps to help me do just that! Since I’m on my phone a lot, I figured it was a good tool to help me maximize my sleepy time.

  1. “SleepCycle”: Turn on the app, then place your phone under your pillow. It will wake you up in the lightest part of your sleep cycle so you feel refreshed when you wake up. This is a good app for days when you don’t need to get up at a certain time or for nap times.
  2. “Spin Me”: This app acts as your alarm, and the only way to turn it off is to spin around a few times! No snooze button for you!plexusdesign33_1x
  3. Spotify’s “Wake Up Happy” playlist: Download the Spotify app and add the “Wake Up Happy” playlist to your library. Listen to this when you get up in the morning to help you feel happy and ready for the day.
  4. lux: This app helps prevent you from being kept up by your phone. We all know that you aren’t supposed to be looking at screens at night because the “blue light” emitted by your phone’s screen signals your brain to keep you awake. The app adjusts your phone’s color based on your local sunset time, which will eliminate the “blue light”, helping you fall asleep faster.

Happy snoozing!

Stop Hating The Mornings!

Do you moan and groan every time that 7a.m. alarm clock goes off for school?  I sure do!  If you’re like me, then you love to sleep in and cherish a dark, quiet room.  I’ve started to try to hate my mornings a little less.  Doing so actually makes your day easier!  Now this may sound impossible to you, but I promise it’s doable!  Follow these simple tips and you’ll be on your way to an easier morning!

Natural light is one of the best alarm clocks there is!  Instead of sleeping with your blinds closed or a dark curtain, sleep with them open or opt for a sheer curtain.  The natural light, which will start to appear before your alarm goes off, will make it easier to wake up.  Since it’s harder to sleep in a bright room, your body will start to wake itself up on its own.  Another great way to wake up easier is to use citrus lotion or body gel.  Studies have shown that the smell of citrus in theChelsea Crockett- citrus body wash morning actually triggers the brain to wake up faster.  For your next morning shower, try an orange scented body wash!

Delete that boring default alarm ring from your phone and apply one of your favorite songs to get your day going.  I mean, who doesn’t love waking up to the sound of Beyoncé’s voice? Last, have a positive attitude!  When you first wake up think of all the good things you have to look forward to that day.  Don’t stress about that honors history test.  Look past that and think positive!  Start your mornings off right…be happy!

Love,
