Nick and I are always trying to eat healthier – who isn’t? I’ve been interested in trying clean eating, which allows you to eat lots of yummy foods that are both nutritious AND delicious, but also satisfying. This means cutting out foods that are processed, have lots of preservatives, etc. We also love eating out, so I started looking into clean eating tips that even non-health nuts like us could follow. Here is what I have found!

  1. The easiest way to start is with the things you already eat. Take recipes you love and make them clean! Nick and I love tacos. So, to make them clean, we can use grass-fed beef and other organic and high quality ingredients. If you are eating it with a side like rice, use wild rice or brown rice instead of white.
  2. Plan ahead. I find that I eat the worst when I am in a pinch. Most times, the most convenient things to make are the unhealthiest. Planning a weekly menu ahead helps avoid this! Meal prep is also a must. Many “clean” foods are ingredients and not ready-to-eat foods. So, preparing them ahead saves you time in the long run. Cut up that produce and have it ready to eat when you get in the snacking mood instead of just washing it and putting it straight in the fridge.
  3. It is not all or nothing. You decide how strict you want to be. It is overwhelming to think about eliminating all processed foods – and unrealistic to think that you can and should eliminate them completely from your life. I don’t think I could go forever without a Reese Peanut Butter Cup. Not possible. So, make clean eating work for your lifestyle. Do your best to eat natural and clean most of the time, but don’t think that Chinese food on a Tuesday night is out of the question. Make your goal to eat clean 75% of the time and you will be much more successful than if you try and go 100% cold turkey.
  4. Take it one thing at a time. Make your healthy changes slow. If you usually take chips for lunch as a snack, switch them for carrot sticks and humus. If you typically eat white rice, switch it to brown. Your body will thank you for the slow transition rather than a shock to the system.

If you are interested in starting the clean eating journey too, I hope these tips helped you! They definitely helped me feel more confident about committing to the lifestyle change.

Dieting can be a tricky subject.  Some people aren’t sure how to do it quite right which can result in actually gaining weight or hurting your body.  There are certain myths that revolve around the topic of dieting and I wanted to clear up a few of them!  This way, you can get the most out of your dieting! 🙂

  • You should skip meals to lose weight faster.  DO NOT do this!  Skipping meals and eating less is not the way to diet.  There are certain diet plans that will sometimes have you eating more rather than less!
  • It’s not good to eat after 8 or 9 PM.  WRONG!  Whether it’s 3 pm or 3 am, your body will still metabolizing the calories you eat regardless.  Instead of not eating after 8, try to cut out that unhealthy midnight snack!
  • You have to go on a diet to lose weight.  This isn’t always true!  Simply eating healthy can still do the job just as well.  That being said, if you want to diet, find one that works for you!
  • You don’t have to exercise as long as you’re on a diet.  WRONG!  As I mentioned before, these two go hand-in-hand.  Of course, you can lose some weight if you’re solely dieting, but the best results happen when you’re both exercising and eating healthy!
  • As long as the label says low-fat, then you’re good to go.  WRONG!  Just because it’s low-fat doesn’t mean there aren’t other things you should be worrying about.  Labels can trick you so be careful!

Did you think these were true, as well?  I know I did before I actually looked into them!

Good luck! – Chels

I have been hearing the phrase “clean eating” a lot lately. What exactly IS clean eating? I always knew it had to do with eating healthy and weight loss, but I never really knew exactly what it entailed.  Clean eating is simple. It is the concept of eating healthy, whole, unprocessed foods.  Here is a little more info on what clean eating is. Who knows, maybe you will want to try it out for yourself!

  1. Choose foods that are unrefined: This means that you eat more whole grains like quinoa and beans as well. Clean sugars are sugars like honey, agave, and maple syrup.
  2. Be aware of salt, sugar, and fat: When you cut out processed foods, it makes it a lot easier to do this! These are responsible for a lot of the extra calories we take in every day. Clean foods are naturally low in those three things.
  3. Don’t drink your calories: High calorie drinks like flavored coffee and soft drinks add an extra four to five hundred calories a day. Yikes! Choose water or green tea instead.
  4. Include carbs, fat, and protein in every meal: We usually get enough carbs and fat in our diet, but a lot of times we lack protein. Protein is important when you are trying to build muscle and can also keep you fuller longer.
  5. Minimize processed food: Try and focus on eating natural foods, not foods that are out of a box or can.

I am trying my best to eat clean, and if you want to live a healthy lifestyle, then you will too!

Running is one of the best stress relievers, AND it is an awesome way to get in some cardio! I have been running a lot more lately and am really starting to love it. In order to get the most out of your run and be successful, you need to give your body the right fuel. Here are a few fueling tips to help you optimize your runs and fuel your body the right way.

  1. Before your run: Before your run you need to eat foods that are filled with natural sugars that are easy to burn for energy. Bananas are one of these foods! Plus they are a great source of potassium and are delicious. Apples are also an awesome source of natural sugars.866e0349ae5b537d154bb93ba5c67c5c
  2. During your run: If you are doing a long distance run, it is important to continually fuel your body so you do not run out of energy. Starbursts are great for this! They are easy to chew while running and pack a sugar punch.
  3. After your run: Eat some oats! Oats are rich in carbs and high in protein and fiber. Grab a bowl of oatmeal with almond milk and fruit for the perfect recovery snack!

Happy fueling!

Do you ever wonder how long it would take to work off something you have eaten? I sure do. As I am sippin on that Dunkin Donuts iced coffee I am thinking just how far I would have to run to work off its sugary goodness. I wonder the same thing about a lot of different foods. Well, wonder no more! Here is a handy dandy list of some of the foods we eat on a regular basis and what it would take to burn them off. Warning: the results may both surprise and scare you!

  • 1 glazed donut: 192 calories= 53 minutes of lunges
  • 1 M&M: 3.4 calories= walking the length of a football field
  • 1 slice of pepperoni pizza: 260 calories= 272 burpees..in a row. Owchie.krispy-kreme-original-glazejpg-21498b2b6b5a9441
  • 1 can of Coke: 140 calories= 17 minutes of jogging outside
  • 1 medium fry: 380 calories= 55 minutes on a stair stepper machine
  • 1 18 ounce milkshake: 780 calories= 65 minutes on the treadmill going 6 mph
  • 2 pancakes & maple syrup: 402 calories= 40 minutes of swimming laps
  • 1 chocolate cupcake: 240 calories= 27 minutes of beach volleyball
  • 1 small theatre popcorn & butter: 630 calories= 135 minutes on the elliptical

Kind of eye-opening, right? I have to admit, though, that it is nice to know what I am getting myself into when I grab myself a glazed donut.. 53 minutes of lunges, that is what! I hope you found these comparisons interesting and keep them in mind just like I am. J
