Flat abs are something that I think we all strive for. I mean, who doesn’t want a rock solid tummy?! Working out is only a small contributor to abs, believe it or not. As my high school PE teacher would say, “Abs are made in the kitchen!” And it is true! The food you eat has a huge impact on your body and your weight loss. Here are a few foods that help you in your journey to flat abs.

  1. Eggs: They are the perfect protein source! They have a great balance of essential amino acids that help build muscle, plus if you eat one for breakfast, you are less hungry as the day goes on! Less hungry = less snacking = less calories consumed!
  2. Apples: Apples are 85% water, which helps you feel full, and have 5 grams of fiber! This makes them an awesome midnight/midday snack! Plus, apples help promote healthy lungs and prevent some cancers, so an apple a day DOES keep the doctor away.
  3. Leafy greens: Leafy greens are things like kale, spinach, and broccoli! They are a great source of calcium which helps fuel your workouts, and help prevent cancer! Plus, they make great salads. 😉

Do you and your family get together on Easter? If so, I have a crazy fun family game idea. It involves paint, eggs, and canvas or a poster board! Sounds like fun to me! What you will need:

 Emptied eggshells

  • Paint (preferably washable)
  • A canvas, or you could use poster board or paper

 Filling the eggs with paint is super easy, you can just save the shells of the eggs you eat. Rinse the shells out and put them the carton to dry. Now all you do is pour paint into the empty egg shells! You can use whatever colors you want. Set up a canvas or poster board in the grass and you can all take turns throwing paint filled eggs at it! It will look so cool when you are done, and you can let it dry and keep it to remember that Easter! Your family will have a blast throwing (and sometimes missing).

 This idea kind of reminds me of the scene in “Princess Diaries” when Mia and her mom are throwing darts at paint-filled balloons, am I right?

As the saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Although many people like to skip breakfast, it really is essential in waking you up and giving you energy!  Now I wouldn’t count a donut as good fuel, but there are specific foods that are perfect to get your day started off right.  Check out which foods you should keep in your kitchen to eat right when you wake up!Chelsea Crockett- bran cereal

Eating 30 minutes after you wake up is key for your metabolism. It’s the perfect time to digest food faster and burn off more calories as you consume the food.  Since your body is burning a larger amount of calories, it’s important to load up on carbs and protein first thing in the morning.  Grabbing a whole wheat piece of toast, eggs, and some fruit is an ideal breakfast.  Now, I understand many of us don’t have time to cook ourselves breakfast before school, so if you’re on the go, try Greek yogurt or bran cereal.  Greek yogurt is packed full of protein and even gives you a great amount of dairy.  Bran cereals are packed with fiber and B-vitamins which keep you fuller longer.  This way, you won’t find yourself day dreaming about lunch during class.

This school year, I challenge you not to skip breakfast! Your body craves a energy packed meal!

            As the saying goes, “You are what you eat.”  I couldn’t agree any more with this statement!  If you eat fast food every day, your body and mood will feel the effects.  You’ll feel sluggish and down.  It’s important to feed your body foods that will make you happy.  Surprisingly, there are certain foods that can actually boost your mood.  It’s an all-natural way to go from sad to happy!Chelsea Crockett- greek yogurt

  • Greek yogurt: This type of yogurt is packed with more calcium than milk and studies show that a high intake of calcium can boost your mood.  Low calcium levels can produce anxiety, depression, and slow thinking.  Eat your yogurt!!
  • Dark chocolate: Of course chocolate is a mood booster, duh?!  I mean, who doesn’t love chocolate?  Dark chocolate, especially, improves blood flow to the brain.  This makes your body more energized and vibrant.
  • Asparagus:  This vegetable has the highest concentration of serotonin, a mood regulator for the brain.
  • Honey:  Although sweet like sugar, this sweet treat can reduce inflammation and reduce depression.
  • Eggs:  The fatty omega-3 acid found in eggs can give your body enough energy to make it through your whole day.  When you’re energized, your whole body will feel alive!

Do you struggle with black heads? No worries, pretty much everyone does! They are a common skin ailment of many teens. They can be obnoxious and not easy on the eyes. What would you say if I told you that there is a super cheap, super easy way to eliminate black heads? Read on!

 What you will need for this nifty face mask is 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Separate the egg whites from the yellow parts. Only keep the egg whites. Beat the whites with a whisk for about a minute

Egg-39to get a frothy consistency. Add the lemon juice and whisk the ingredients together. Lemon juice has Alpha Hydroxy acid which is a common over the counter remedy for blackheads. Lemon juice penetrates 

Before applying the mask, cleanse your face and wash off all oils. Apply the mask to your face, covering your face completely. Let the mask dry for 15 to 20 minutes. The egg whites will cause your skin to feel stiff, so no smiling for the time being, ladies! Peel the mask off of your face, do not wash it off! If you wash it off with water you will not remove the black heads! You can wash your face AFTER you have peeled the mask off completely.your pores, eliminating oils and other impurities that cause blackheads. It also tightens pores!

            Breakfast, it’s the most important meal of the day!  Starting your day off with a healthy meal is a great way to fuel your metabolism and get your day going.  Sometimes, it’s not always easy to make yourself a good breakfast when you you’re in a rush for school or work, but it IS possible!  Get rid of that boring cereal or granola bar and rethink breakfast with these new and creative ideas. 

            Toast is one of the most popular breakfast sides.  With so many topping choices, the variety is endless!  So what if you’re sick of the typical butter and jelly?  Try topping your toast with peanut butter and sliced bananas or any flavor of cream cheese with a handful of blueberries and strawberries.  Toast doesn’t have to be boring!

            If you like salty breakfasts try Egg Beaters!  It’s eggs already mixed up, so all you have to do is pour and cook!  They come in all different flavors including three cheese and southwest.  Try making an omelet stuffed with your favorite meat, veggies, and cheeses.  If you don’t have time to cook in the morning, make pre-made omelet muffins.  Start by greasing a muffin pan so the eggs don’t stick.  In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and any toppings you would like, including meat, cheese, and veggies.  Fill each muffin cup evenly and bake at 350° for 20 minutes.  Now, you have breakfast ready in advance.  Just heat and enjoy!  Chelsea Crockett- omelette muffins

            Never skip out on breakfast!  Your body will love you if you fill it up with a hearty and healthy breakfast.  Breakfast doesn’t have to be boring.  Get creative and rethink breakfast!
