If you’re like me, running is a way to get in shape and relieve stress at the same time!  It’s one of my favorite things to do when I have the time.  Some days though I don’t always feel like going for a run but still want to get some cardio in.  Or maybe you absolutely hate running and want a way to get cardio in without having to do so.  Here are some substitutions for a cardio exercise!

  • Go for a bike ride!  Biking is an awesome workout to do if you’re not into running.  It tones your legs and gets your lungs pumping.  Not to mention that it’s fun and enjoyable!
  • Try out a boxing class!  Chelsea Crockett - Workout JumpsI wish I could get more into boxing.  So many celebrities and models swear by it!  It tones your whole body and is a great cardio workout.
  • Do an interval workout.  Interval workouts are up to you what you choose to include in them.  I always like mixing in jumping jacks, burpees, stairs, etc.  Whatever gets your heart pumping!
  • Go for a swim.  Swimming is such a good workout.  If you have access to a pool, wake up early and go for a swim!
  • Give Zumba a try!  Zumba not only gets your body moving but lets you have fun while doing so!  Get some of your friends to go with you and get your bodies moving!

Do you like to run?  Or are one of these workouts your go-to?  Let me know in the comments below! 🙂

Cold Weather Workout Gear

As it gets cooler outside, working out in the great outdoors becomes easier. During the summer I can barely stand to be outside more than 20 minutes, let alone exercising outside! One plus to cooler weather is that you get to wear adorable warm workout gear! Here are my chilly weather workout essentials.

  1. Cute thermal leggings: When I run outside in the fall and winter I have to make sure my legs stay warm. Even walking to the gym from my car is chilly! So, that is where adorable workout leggings come in. There are so many cool patterns and styles out there, and they come in a variety of lengths for whatever the weather requires!fullsizerender-58
  2. A cute workout hoodie: I love thin workout jackets that are still warm but do not weigh you down. If you are on a run or doing an outdoor workout, a lightweight hoodie is a must. You can easily take it off if you get warm and wrap it around your waist, but it is always a good idea to overdress in case it is cooler than you think out there!
  3. Adorable ear warmers: Some people may think wearing ear warmers makes them look silly, but they just haven’t found the right pair! Keeping your head warm will ensure the rest of your body stays warm, so keep those ears nice and cozy. Plus, they keep your hair out of your face!

I love cold weather workout gear, don’t you? Sometimes I wear it to school even when I am not going to work out. It is just too cozy to pass up! 😉

How To Keep Your Metabolism Kickin’

Your metabolism is what helps your body burn fat. There are so many easy and healthy ways to keep your metabolism burning all day long that don’t require you to take weird supplements or do anything crazy. It can be as easy as drinking a cup of coffee! Curious? Keep reading.

  1. Start the day strong: If you are a morning coffee drinker like me, then you will like this step. Caffeine in coffee and green tea naturally stimulates your central nervous system, so your daily cup of Joe can help boost your metabolism! Just make sure it is just one cup a day. Also, eating a healthy breakfast with whole grains fuels your metabolism and helps you burn energy all day long. Skipping breakfast is a no-no when it comes to fueling your metabolism.download
  2. Keep your body hydrated: After a fueled morning, keep the day going strong by drinking a lot of water during the afternoon hours. Drinking water aids your body’s fat-burning processes! If you aren’t a huge water fan, add fruit to it to make it taste better. Also, along with drinking a good amount of water, eating a high-protein lunch makes your body work harder to digest the foods, which means burning more calories and boosting your metabolism.
  3. Work it out: An afternoon workout is also a metabolism-boosting essential. Workouts like HIIT (high-intensity interval training) are great because they mix strength training with cardio. You could even go for an afternoon walk before or after lunch to increase your body’s fat-burning levels.
  4. End it on a good note: After a busy, stressful day, give your mind time to wind down. Stress actually slows your metabolism, so try and keep your stress maintained. Also, many studies have linked weight gain to lack of good sleep, so make sure you are getting at least 8 hours of quality zzz’s!

Keeping your metabolism burning all day long really isn’t that tough! These tips are simple and easy to work into your daily routine.

How To Get Back Into a Workout Routine

Trust me, I know how it feels to have zero time/motivation to work out. I have just recently started getting back into running and I try to do that as many days of the week that I can. It can be easy to talk myself out of going on a run though, and I have been looking for ways to avoid talking myself out if it and ways to stay in my routine. Here are my tips on how to bet back into a fitness routine and stay motivated!

  1. Lay your workout clothes in plain sight: In the morning, lay your workout clothes in a place that you will see them the most so they continually remind you that you need to put them on and hit the trail or go to the gym. You could even pack a gym bag in the morning so that you have it all ready to go after school!b07aeb4fb52774806ebcdfa3d3a3e03c
  2. Take a challenge: Start a “couch to 5k” or “30 day abs” challenge! Having a challenge makes you more likely to stick to it and will make you want to complete it!
  3. Break your workouts up: If you are running, set goals. For instance, look ahead and pick a landmark, tell yourself to keep going until you reach it, and then once you do set another goal. It will distract you and keep you going! If you are working out in the gym, say that you will do 10 or 15 more sit-ups and then you will be done. Simple breakdowns like that make all the difference!
  4. Bring a buddy: Grab a friend that wants to get in shape or a friend that will motivate you and take them on a run or to the gym with you. You will have someone to push you, someone to talk to, and someone to say “hey, get out of bed, let’s go to the gym!”

Getting back into a fitness routine can be rough. Your body takes a while to get used to it, and it is mentally tough too. I know you can do it, you got this!! Keep that winter layer of fluff away! I am going to have to work at it too, so we can work at it together!

Lately, I have started getting back into my workout grind. It wasn’t easy getting motivated, though. Yes, wanting to be healthy and fit is great motivation, but sometimes you just need a little bit of a push to really get back into the swing of things. I have actually found that keeping motivational workout quotes around has, well, kept me motivated! On days when you think about skipping your workout, seeing a motivational quote can really make you want to get up and go work out. I know it sounds silly, but it is totally true and seriously works. Here are a few of my favorite motivational quotes that I found at Elite Daily.

  • Loving your body means taking care of it!

1

  • Getting stronger takes time, but it is so worth it!

2

  • Loving yourself is one of the healthiest things you can do.

3

  • This winter, keep your workout routine up, don’t fall behind! It is so much easier to stay in shape than to try and get back in shape once you’ve stopped working out.

4

  • It doesn’t matter how slow you go, you’re still ahead of everyone who isn’t working out!
    5

Keep these motivational quotes close by if you are in need of some, well, motivation! They will make you want to tie up your running shoes and hit the trails or head to the gym.

Sometimes I feel like no matter how much I run, my stubborn fat just won’t go away! I recently started discovering a love for running and I am so excited to its impact on my health, but sometimes I feel like I’m not seeing results. If you cut out foods that are high in fat and incorporate these tips into your next run, you can kiss that belly fat goodbye!download

  1. Mix up your pace: Interval workouts are a surefire way to boost your metabolism. Instead of running at one set pace for your whole workout, alternate between running at a fast pace for about a minute and then running at a slow pace for 2 and a half minutes.
  2. Turn up the time: Just doing crunches wont trim your waist. You have to put the work and the time in! Every 5 minutes of running at a ten-minute mile pace burns about 45 calories, so think about that during your next run and it will motivate you to go just a bit longer!
  3. Kick up your knees: One way to strengthen your core is to do one minute intervals where you run with high knees. Concentrate on using your abs rather than your leg muscles and get those knees as high as you can!

I cannot wait to use these tips on my next run! I am so ready to kick belly fat to the curb.

Running outside is something I really enjoy. The scenery, the crazy amount of calories you can burn, and a super toned lower body are a few great results of running outside. But, you have to be safe and be aware of the injuries that you could cause when not prepared. Here is how to play it safe and get the most out of your outdoor runs.

  1. Pick a popular route: If you are just starting out, ask friends for their favorite routes, or research popular running trails in your area. You definitely don’t want to get lost! Also, by picking a popular trail, you won’t be alone and there is safety in numbers. I recommend grabbing a friend to run with, just to play it safe.df8f28845831b2802677c1d74f52317b
  2. Start soft and slow: Running on a treadmill is not good for your joints or your muscles, so if you are used to running on a treadmill and you start running outside, it will probably take some time to adjust. Also, if you are a beginner runner in general, start with short distances and slowly work your way up. It is better for your joints to start off slow. Also, surfaces like a running track, grass, or a bike trail are easier on your joints.
  3. Its more complicated than just running: Your running regime shouldn’t just be hitting the trail and then being done. Stretch first, then when you start running start off slow to warm your muscles up, then towards the end of the run slow down to start and cool your muscles off. Then stretch again. This is essential in preventing injuries!

Running outside is way different than running and working about inside, so you have to approach it totally differently. I never thought I would like running, but I gave it a try and now it is a great way to relieve stress and stay healthy!

I love the feeling I get after a workout, when my muscles are sore and I am exhausted but also feel completely energized at the same time. New studies are showing that, not only is exercise vital to your physical and mental health, it also saves you money!exercise2

How? Let me explain. Studies are showing that regular exercise can save you up to a couple thousand dollars a year in medical bills. Exercising for at least 30 minutes five times a week leads to fewer hospitalizations, and ER and doctor visits! I don’t know about you, but I will do almost anything to avoid having to go to the doctor. It is important,
though, that you are doing the right kind of exercise. Thirty minutes of moderate to intense activity, which is things like fast walking or lawn mowing, five days a week count. Also, 25 minutes of vigorous activity, like running or swimming, 3 days a week works too! Both of these options help boost your heart health and your overall health!

It is obvious that the most important reason to exercise is to keep you mentally and physically healthy, but if you needed even more motivation, just think of the money it saves you!

Don’t get me wrong, I love working out by myself. Long runs with just me and my music are great therapy. But, working out with friends has its perks too! Here are the benefits of working out with friends, besides much-needed girl time.

Accountability: When you are forced to schedule your workout ahead of time or don’t want to cancel on friends, it is a great way to stay accountable!635980440725861308438135525_bd4e6a743aeb93e9e09220cf56b83739

Motivation: When the going gets tough, your buds can provide that extra boost of energy! We all have those days when the last thing we want to do is work out, so having a friend to get you off your tush and into the gym is always a bonus.

Learn more exercises: Your friends can teach you new moves and ways to work out! I love mixing up my exercise routines. They can teach how to use different machines at the gym or they can show you new fitness classes that you would never have known about if it weren’t for them!

Healthy competition: Everyone knows you work harder when you are competing against someone! 😉

It’s more fun!: Working out with a friend is just downright fun.

Get up, grab a friend, and hit the gym.

The “Freshman 15” is always under debate.  Is it real?  Can it actually happen to me?  Truth is, it can happen, but it can also be easily prevented!  Since I’m going to be battling it myself this year, I thought I’d come up with a few tips on how I’ll be staying healthy my freshman year.  I hope these help you, too!

  1. Stock your mini fridge with only healthy snacks.  If you only allow yourself to buy healthy food, then you won’t have the temptation to eat junk food!
  2. Cover your windows with dark curtains so you can assure yourself complete darkness when you sleep.Chelsea Crockett - Sworkit  You may not realize it, but sleep is very important when it comes to your mental and physical health.
  3. Set a fitness plan that works with your class schedule.  If you don’t plan out your workouts, you’ll find yourself with little to no time left at the end of the day!
  4. Practice a small-space workout that you can do in your dorm room.  For those days that you’re too lazy to leave your room, find a simple ab, leg, or arm workout that you can do in your own dorm!  There are plenty of apps like the one on the right that you can download that will plan out a workout for you!
  5. Wear your workout clothes to class and walk everywhere!  If you’re on a big campus, then getting your steps in isn’t hard.  Also, if you plan on working out straight after class, simply where your exercise clothes to save some time and encourage you to hit the gym!

What other tips do you use for keeping fit in college?  Let me know so I can try them out at my school, too!

I think we can all agree that, most of the time, working out with friends is more fun than working out alone. Not only is it more enjoyable, it is also good for your friendship! If you are looking to strengthen your bond with your BFF, working out together is a great way to do so! Here is why.

  1. You spend more time together: This is an obvious one. When you work out together, you are getting to spend time together and talk and bond while you sweat your booty off. Setting a workout schedule and having a routine with a friend means more time with them.FullSizeRender (10)
  2. You’re making a transformation together: You get to see your body transformations together and get to congratulate each other! You have been there from the beginning of one another’s fitness journey, so you are able to see her improvements and how her body has changed. Having someone there who recognizes your success and can celebrate with you is a huge encouragement, and knowing that she has been there for you since the beginning of your journey will make you feel so much closer to her!
  3. You’re being vulnerable together: Working out isn’t pretty. You sweat, you grunt, you make funny faces and funny noises. Having someone see you at your worst and most vulnerable can make you feel closer to them. They have seen you at your worst, and at your best, and they still love you!

So, next time you feel you need some girl time or some quality time with a friend, take them to the gym or on a bike ride with you. Your friendship will benefit, and so will your body!

Recently I have been looking for ways to improve my endurance, which is how long/far your body can go without tiring. When you are running or lifting weights, having good endurance is vital because it keeps you going for longer distances and for longer amounts of time and allows you to stop less. Here are a few ways to help you improve your endurance so you can become the best athlete you can be!

  1. Work out outside: When you are running on the treadmill or working out in the gym and you get tired it is easy to just stop. When you are running outside, you have to make it home somehow. If you walk, it takes you twice as long to get home, so you are motivated to keep running in order to make it home faster!images (1)
  2. Exercise with a goal in mind: When you run, have a specific distance in mind. When I am running I keep track of my distance so I can see how close I am to my goal. It is such an awesome feeling when I am at the end of my run and I can see the end in sight. When you are at the gym and you are lifting weights or working out, have a number of exercises or sets in mind. It will motivate you as you check exercises off your list!
  3. Grab a friend: Having a running or workout buddy is always a good idea! They motivate you to actually get up and workout, and they also help you improve your running time and the number of reps you can do by pushing you to run faster and go further!

Now, get up, go workout, and improve your endurance!

Ladies, our time of the month is never fun.  It’s annoying, painful, and sometimes we even have to plan things around it!  It’s just a part of life that we have to deal with.  That being said, there are certain things we can do to make them a little less awful!  Here are 5 hacks that will make you think differently about your period.

  • Buy a heating pad.  Heating pads work wonders when it comes to cramps. Chelsea Crockett - Exercise I suggest getting one that doesn’t have a cord so you don’t have to deal with the hassle.  Most are microwavable so they’re quick and easy!
  • Cut out the caffeine.  Caffeine can cause your body to retain more water which will make your bloating worse than it already is.
  • Start taking Advil/Ibuprofen two days before your period starts.  Your body starts releasing hormones a couple days before your period actually begins.  Stay ahead of all of the cramps and pain!
  • Exercise, exercise, exercise.  When you work out, your body releases hormones called endorphins that make your body feel good.  They work on canceling out the bad hormones from your period!
  • Go to bed early.  Periods often cause fatigue which leads to long, tiresome days.  A little extra sleep is never a bad idea!

Let me know what hacks you use for when you’re on your period!

If you’re going to a college away from home or are moving to a new city or town, you know that moving can be a stressful, nerve wracking experience. I am nervous about making friends and feeling at home in a new city! One way I know I can feel more at home is to get involved at a gym. Fitness classes are a great place to meet new people and make new friends, and they can help you regain a social life after moving to a new city. Here is how you can make fitness a way to make your new home feel like home.images (2)

First, find a fitness studio or gym that you want to try, or, if you are in college, go to your school’s fitness center. Then find classes there that you think would be fun to take. When you are there, make small talk with other classmates. Try to start conversations, or become part of other people’s. Once you feel comfortable around the group, ask a few of them to go get food after class. Getting to know people and feeling part of a group is so important in making your new city feel like home.

Next, walk or run around your city. Of course you need to be safe when you do this and be aware of your surroundings, but the best way to get to know your new home is to walk or run it! Take a friend with you to make sure you are safe. Instead of taking a bus or Uber or your car, walk. You will discover new shops, restaurants, cafes, yoga studios, parks, and all kinds of other cool landmarks in your city while getting a workout. If you don’t like running on the treadmill (who really does?) then hit the streets of your new home.

I definitely think that getting involved in a gym and in fitness classes will help anyone adjust in a new city and make new friendships. I plan on using this tactic when I move to Cali next month! Not only will you make friends, but you will stay in shape as well. It is a win-win!
