4 Ways You Could Be Dooming Your Metabolism

I often hear people say “Man, I wish I had a better metabolism and could eat anything I wanted.” It is true, a fast metabolism is something that a lot of us wish for. Luckily, it can be achieved! There are a lot of things you do every day unknowingly that are driving your metabolism down, so it is important to drop these habits if you want to improve your metabolism.

  1. Sitting all day: When you sit all day it causes your body to turn off at the metabolic level as your circulation slows. Your fat burning enzymes turn off and your blood sugar is used less. Try getting up and walking ever hour or so to wake your circulation up. I know this can be hard, being in school all day, but walking to class can help wake that circulation up.a972dcb2-100c-4343-8513-153879ad6b69_2048x2048
  2. Not getting enough snooze time: Not getting enough sleep can cause our metabolism to slow down to conserve energy. Sleep deprivation also increases our cortisol levels, which lowers the hormones that are used to metabolize nutrients.
  3. Drinking too little H2O: Water isn’t the most fun drink to guzzle (I mean, Dr. Pepper tastes pretty much 10x better), but it is the best thing for you. It can speed your metabolism up almost 30% after you drink some down!
  4. Eating at bad times: Your body has a natural rhythm that goes with your sleep and wake cycle, and it has a hard time digesting food at night. People who eat later at night burn less calories than those who eat earlier in the evening, studies prove it! Also, eating light meals during the day and then a big meal at night is not smart.

Staying away from these metabolism-slowing habits helps you kick your calorie-burning power into gear, but you still need to eat healthy and exercise to be as healthy as you can be.

Pizza. For breakfast. Did those three words blow your breakfast mind? If you are in the mood for something savory and saucy for breakfast, whip up a pizza scone! This recipe is from food blogger “Public Lives, Secret Recipes.”

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Dash of salt
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar14017fa0-e46a-0133-7ff3-0e31b36aeb7f
  • 2/3 cup almond milk
  • 8 tbsp. cold salted butter
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 bag shredded mozzerella cheese
  • 1 bag pepperoni

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. While it is warming up, grab a large mixing bowl and combine flour, salt, baking powder, milk, sugar, butter, and oregano. Stir all of this with a mixer until it is crumbly. Work the dough together using your hands until it makes a ball. Roll out the dough and cut it into triangles that measure about 4 inches on each side. Place ½ of the triangles onto a cookie sheet about 4 inches apart. Pour sauce, pepperoni, and cheese on top of each triangle. Then place the second triangle on top of the cheesed one and press the dough together to combine at the sides. Bake them for about 20 minutes or until they are golden brown, then eat up! Here is the video on how to make them, just incase you need a visual: https://youtu.be/C-yXNBhGw0c .

These are basically the perfect excuse for you to eat pizza for breakfast. Wouldn’t you agree?

Making meals in a mug is one of my new specialties. One I think will come in handy in college when I don’t have an oven at my disposal! Today’s mug recipe is a deliciously easy take on French toast! It is super quick and super delish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 piece of buttered bread635775343617184105-853577182_216x216_Easy-French-Toast-Egg-Mug-Scrambler
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 TBSP of syrup
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 TBSP of chocolate chips
  • Powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar (totally optional, but totally recommended!)

In a microwaveable mug, mix the egg, milk, syrup, cinnamon and salt until well combined. Cut the bread into squares that are bite sixed. Add the bread to the mug and press the pieced down so they are covered with the liquid. Add the chocolate chips to the mug and stir them into the bread mixture. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar on top and then microwave the mug for 2 minutes, stopping every 30 seconds so it doesn’t spill over the mug. Let the mug cool about 1-2 minutes, then sprinkle powdered sugar on top.

Enjoy your easy peasy mug French toast!

Sour Patch Grapes

If you haven’t eaten a whole 1 pound bag of Sour Patch kids on a road trip and then not been able to feel your mouth for a solid 3 hours afterwards, you have never really lived. Just kidding, but all jokes aside, I could put away a pretty hefty amount of those sour dudes. If you are like me and love sour candy but don’t love all of the bad-for-you sugar in them, check out these “Sour Patch” grapes!

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 box Jolly Rancher Watermelon Jello mixSour-Patch-Grapes-432a299b0a46f29d9a1298e9727ec2b718001a44
  • 1/3 box Jolly Rancher Green Apple Jello mix
  • 1/3 box lemon Jello mix
  • 1/3 box orange Jello mix
  • 3 pounds green grapes
  • 1 cup of water

Pour 1/3 of each box of Jello into small separate bowls. Have your grapes sitting in a bowl of water. Take a grape out of the bowl and poke a toothpick through it in the spot where the stem was, and hold on to the grape using the toothpick while rolling the grape in the Jello mix. Set them on a baking sheet covered in wax paper. After alternating dipping flavors for each grape and all of the grapes are rolled, place them in the fridge until they are chilled. Done!

My friends love these. They are great movie night snacks when you really want to stuff your face with candy but you know prom and summer are coming up so you have to keep your hot bod maintained. Ya feel?

I love veggie chips. The word “veggie” makes me feel like I can eat a whole bag and consider it healthy. 😉 In this case, the chips actually ARE healthy because they only have 3 ingredients! Here is how to make a great healthy alternative to chips/crackers!

Ingredients:

  • 4 large zucchini, evenly sliced 1/8 inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil7586481160_423bbd93c4
  • Salt

Slice the zucchini in very thin slices and then them on paper towels to dry. Cover the slices with more paper towels and set a baking sheet on top of them. Press down on the baking sheet to help squeeze out some of the moisture. Preheat the oven to 235 degrees F and then line several baking sheets with parchment paper. Brush the parchment paper with olive oil and then lay the zucchini slices in a single layer on the parchment paper. Fit as many on each baking sheet as possible. Brush the top of the zucchini with olive oil and sprinkle the slices with salt. Bake for 1 1/2 – 2 hours until crisp and golden. If some chips are still a little flimsy or damp, remove the chips that are done and place the damp chips back in the oven for a few more minutes. Allow the zucchini chips to cool on the paper towels to absorb any extra oil. Store the chips you don’t devour immediately in an air-tight container!

I take these to school with me as a snack to keep my tummy satisfied during the day!

XOXO, Chels

The weather where I live is pretty chilly, and by pretty chilly I mean downright freezing. And when the weather is cold, there is nothing better than a nice hot snack to warm your tummy right up. If you are looking for an easy, 5 minute meal for one, then look no further! Here is mac n cheese in a mug.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup elbow noodles9176570759_d6f2fb9f81_b1
  • ½ cup milk or water (milk if you want creamy noodles)
  • ½ cup finely shredded cheddar cheese

Add the milk/water and noodles to an oversized mug and place it on a large plate just incase you have spillage while it is in the microwave. Microwave the mug on the plate for 1 minute, then stir, and microwave another minute. Stir it again, then check your noodles. If they aren’t quite done, microwave them an additional 3o seconds. After the noodles are cooked, if you are using water, pour out the water that is left, and if you are using milk don’t pour it out. Add in the cheese and stir well. Now you are ready to dig in!

So, if you want some yummy comfort food but don’t want to make the whole box, make your own mug!

It can be hard to eat healthy, especially when these so-called “healthy” foods turn out to be not-so-healthy after all!  It can be hard to tell the difference between healthy foods and ones that pose as them.  I’m breaking down a few “healthy” snacks that I used to enjoy all the time!  While I’m disappointed to find out how bad they are for you, luckily, there are plenty of alternatives!Chelsea Crockett- frozen yogurt

  1. I love veggies chips. I mean, veggie is in the name so they have to be healthy for you, right?! Unfortunately, they are packed full of vegetable powder, flour, sodium, and food coloring.  Instead, try eating raw veggies with hummus or making your own kale chips in the oven!
  2. Yogurt is one of my favorite snacks and it’s extremely good for you! A lot of restaurants and coffee shops make this healthy snack unhealthy by adding granola and sugar.  Not to mention, it’s easy to add a muffin to that order.  Stick to a small portion of regular or Greek yogurt with no toppings.
  3. Society has tricked us into thinking fiber is extra healthy for you. While it is necessary, fiber granola bars are not.  They are packed with powdered fiber, so they add sugar, honey, chocolate, or peanut butter to cover up the taste.  SO much sugar!  Eat granola bars that are packed full of whole grains and nuts instead!
  4. I liked to think that frozen yogurt was healthy for you because of the name. I’m sad to say that I was wrong.  It is full of sugar and of course those deadly toppings!  Try an at-home version with Greek yogurt.  Add fruit, granola, or dark chocolate to the mix!
  5. Since pita chips are baked they’re good for you, right?   Pita chips are made up of mostly white flour.  If you want something to snack on, make sure you grab whole grain pita chips for your hummus.
  6. Frozen meals are so easy to throw in the microwave, especially with my busy schedule; but have you ever looked at the ingredient list?! It’s full of sodium and chemicals I can’t even pronounce.  If you’re in a rush try making a turkey sandwich on whole wheat and a cup of fruit.

I challenge you to make healthy choices this week! Happy snacking!

The title of this post makes my mouth water like Niagara Falls. No joke. Who wouldn’t want to start their day off with pancakes stuffed with delicious, chocolatey Nutella! Here is how to make that dream a reality.

Ingredients:

  • 10 – 14 tbsp Nutella
  • Pancake mixNutella-Stuffed-Pancakes-364x245
  • 1 tsp butter, separated (2 x ½ tsp)
  • Sliced strawberries (optional)

The first step is to freeze discs of Nutella. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and then spoon out 7 dollups of Nutella. Spread the Nutella into 2.5 inch discs and then place them in the freezer for about an hour. Meanwhile, make the pancake mix and butter up a skillet. Pour ¼ cup of pancake mix into the skillet and then quickly place a Nutella disc on top of the batter. Cover up the disc with more batter and wait 2 minutes, then flip the pancake over. Make sure the pancake is cooked, remove it from the skillet, and then make the rest of the pancakes the same way. I top my pancakes with strawberries for some added yumminess and nutrition!

This would make breakfast DEFINITELY the best meal of the day. 😉

XOXO, Chels

Christmas time is here! I repeat, CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE! And with Christmas come delicious treats. Today’s delicious Christmas-themed sweet is holiday popcorn that will remind you of the Grinch himself!

Ingredients:grinch-popcorn2

  • Microwave popcorn
  • 3 cups mini marshmallows
  • Blue and yellow food coloring
  • Another 1/2 cup mini marshmallows
  • Red M&Ms

Pop your microwave popcorn, and once it is done pull out all of the un-popped kernels. Next we make the marshmallow mixture. Melt ¼ cup of butter in a saucepan, and once it is melted add the 3 cups of marshmallows. Stir together until they are melted, and turn the heat off. Add 2 drops of yellow food coloring, mix until it is bright yellow, and then add a small drop of blue. Stir it until it turns green, then pour this mixture over the popcorn. Gently mix it in slowly until the popcorn is mostly covered. Cover a cookie sheet with foil, then pour the popcorn mixture onto it. Drizzle some of the marshmallow mixture over it so the M&Ms and marshmallows have something to stick to, then sprinkle ½ cup of mini marshmallows and M&Ms onto the popcorn. Allow it to cool, then eat up!

Your friends will love this festive treat fit for a Christmas movie night.

If you browse through my website, you’ll be sure to find out that I love food…especially sweets! Whenever I have free time, I love to try out new baking recipes for fun! While it may seem easy, baking can be hard sometimes! I even mess up the box directions! By observing my mom and my own mistakes, I figured out the way around some of the most common…and not some common, baking mistakes. Let’s make the best cake ever!Chelsea Crockett- baking mistakes

  • I love love love fruit! If you’re making a cake or cupcakes with fresh fruit, roll the fruit through flour to keep each piece from sinking to the bottom.
  • Melting chocolate chips can be hard! Microwave chocolate pieces with vegetable or canola oil for short amounts of time, stirring in between. Chocolate can burn very easily! (I’ve done this too many times.)
  • Only fill cupcake cases 2/3 high to leave room for rising! They’ll turn out to be the perfect size!
  • Don’t put too many things in your oven! This causes the baking time to be longer, which may result in over-baked or burnt goods!
  • Test cakes right out of the oven by dipping a toothpick in the cake. If the toothpick is clean, then your cake is perfectly cooked!
  • To avoid your desserts from looking sloppy, make sure they are fully cooled before decorating or icing. I know it’s hard to be patient when it smells so good!!

Happy baking Insiders!

No Bake Cheesecake Balls

Are you craving cheesecake but don’t have the time to go through the whole process of going to the store, finding all of the ingredients, putting them all together, baking them, and then finally getting to enjoy it? Well you are in luck, because I have a simple, easy recipe for delicious raspberry cheesecake balls that don’t require any baking and you probably already have the ingredients in your fridge! Curious? Read on!

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz fresh raspberries, washed and dried
  • 2 8 oz pkgs cream cheese, softened
  • 2 Cups cool whip
  • ⅓ Cup sugar
  • 1 sleeve graham crackers

Place the cream cheese and sugar in a bowl and whip with a hand mixer. Add the raspberry in and stir to combine. You want the raspberries to break up and mix with the cream cheese. Add in the cool whip and stir in with a spoon until they are just combined. Place in freezer for 2 hours. Crumble up your graham crackers however you see fit and place them in a bowl. With a spoon portion out dollops of the cream cheese mix one at a time into the bowl of graham cracker crumbs. Roll the cheesecake ball around in the crumbs using a spoon and place on a sheet tray lined with wax paper. After you’re done rolling the balls place the trays in the freezer for a couple hours until they get frozen. Put them in a Ziploc and take on out when you need a nice sweet treat to nibble on.

How easy was that?!

This recipe for mini caramel apples was too cute to resist! And with autumn right around the corner, why not share a fall-inspired recipe? It’s pretty simple and perfect for a bonfire or Halloween party! Here’s what you need to get started:

First and foremost, you’ll need these ingredients: about 5 of your favorite kind of apples (this can change depending on the amount of people you’ll be serving), caramel (this recipe calls for a pack of the Kraft caramels), and nuts, which are totally optional! You’ll also need a melon baller and some wax paper to lay the caramel apples on at the end.Chelsea Crockett - Mini Caramel Apples

Start by taking the melon baller and scooping out spheres of the apple. Side note: make sure the apples are room temperature. This will help the caramel stick at the end. Next, you have to make your caramel. There are several ways of doing this, just pick your favorite online recipe! Get your wax paper ready and spray it with cooking oil. Punch in sucker sticks into each ball and dip them into the caramel. Make sure the caramel is chilled so it’s slightly thick. This way it won’t slide off as soon as they start to cool.  (This is where you add the nuts if you would like!) Also, leave them sitting out to cool instead of putting them in the fridge. Lastly, enjoy!

Love, Chelsea

Apple pie is one of my favorite desserts, but whipping one up whenever I want isn’t so easy! First you have to get all of your ingredients, spend lots of time making it, and wait for it to finish baking. Who’s got time for that? I wanted to share a quick Pinterest recipe that’ll cure your apple pie cravings in a few minutes!

Let’s start with ingredients. You’ll need Pillsbury crescent rolls, apples, brown sugar, pecans, and apple pie spice. Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F. Set out a pan lined with Chelsea Crockett - Apple Pie Bitesparchment paper and lay each triangle of dough on the paper. Take the brown sugar and the apple pie spice and spread it onto each crescent roll. Then, if you love pecans, sprinkle some chopped pecans on top of the sugar and spice! After that, you’ll need to cut up your apples like the picture above. Dip each slice in melted butter and follow by rolling it up inside the dough. Once all of your rolls are ready to be thrown in the oven, do so for only 10-12 minutes. How quick is that? Let them sit after baking for around 5 minutes and enjoy!

Let me know what you think of them!

XOXO – Chelsea

I’m sure you’ve been seeing this famous meme everywhere, “But first, coffee”.  Celebs and Instagramers alike have been captioning pics and sporting tees with the clever quote; and I don’t blame them, I love my coffee!  It’s so easy to hop in my car and grab a white chocolate mocha from Starbuck’s, but the crash I feel afterwards isn’t worth it.  The amount of sugar in one of those coffees completely overrides every health benefit coffee has.  Between boosting metabolism and lowering your chance at heart disease, it’s only right that we play off these benefits.  Check out how to enjoy your favorite drink by turning it into a health food!Chelsea Crockett- cinnamon and cocoa

  • Avoid sugar at all costs! If you can’t imagine your coffee without a hint of sweetness, try a dash of stevia.
  • Instead of heavy creamers for flavor, try adding cinnamon or cocoa to your coffee!
  • Do not use “fat-free” or “low-fat” creams. These are usually packed full of high fructose corn syrup to make up for lost taste. If you really need creamer, stick to the real stuff.
  • Add a dash of skim milk for calcium.
  • Drink it black! This is the healthiest way to enjoy your coffee.

Hope you enjoy, Insiders!

Tis’ the season of Halloween treats and festivities! There’s nothing I love more than finding fun recipes to put my baking skills to use. Cake pops, in particular, are some of my favorite treats to make. Take a minute to Google image all of the different Halloween pop ideas. You can make ghosts, mummies, jack-o-lanterns, black cats, monsters, etc. The ideas are endless. Not only are they cute but they taste even better!Chelsea Crockett - Spider Cake Pops

If you’re creative in the kitchen, you may be able to come up with an idea or two on how to decorate your cake pops. My favorite ones, like the pops on the right, call for chocolate cake batter, black sprinkles, black icing, black licorice, and the edible hard sugar that acts as the eyes (you can even make them out of icing too!). How simple is that? Another recipe calls for white icing and Oreo cake batter decorated with googly eyes. It was the cutest tray of little white ghosts that tasted delicious as well!

So what are you waiting for? Grab some friends and ingredients and let the baking, icing, and eating begin!
