Tithing is a difficult topic to talk about. For some reason, talking about money makes us uncomfortable and we don’t know how to approach it.

If tithing is a hard topic for you to fully grasp, I understand! No one likes the thought of giving away money, especially if we don’t understand the true reasoning behind it. Luckily, the Bible tells us the “why” behind giving money to the church and also helps eliminate some of the uncomfortable feelings that come along with it!

One big misconception with tithing is that if we give, we will get more in return. Although this isn’t always false, tithing is much more than simply giving to receive. It comes with so many more benefits that allow you to get closer to both God and the place you’re giving to.

I think 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 is the perfect passage to sum this up:

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

Now, let’s break down what 2 Corinthians is really saying. When we give with a gracious heart, God will bless us abundantly. He sees when we so willingly give toward his kingdom with a joyful heart.

I think the middle part of this verse is so important. God doesn’t want us to give reluctantly or under compulsion. He wants us to give cheerfully, hoping that he will multiply our gift and take it further than we could’ve ever imagined.

Tithing also allows us to be involved in something much bigger than ourselves. It allows us to invest in our church, into missions, etc. We get to see our own money benefit others, which leaves us with an even more joyful and generous heart than before!

I think Jacob said it best in Genesis 28:20-22: If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God… And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”

Tithing results in the strengthening of our faith and the growth of our trust in Christ. If we know that God is always faithful, then we should trust him with our money and even our most prized possessions. Especially since HE is the reason we have these “prized” things to begin with!

I encourage you to set a financial goal. Day by day, week by week, month by month, build up to this goal until you reach it! It will benefit you in more ways than you could’ve ever imagined!

Have you ever been asked, “What is Christmas all about?” Some responses could be spending time with family or the delicious ham you get to savor for dinner! Although those are a few pluses, there couldn’t be Christmas without Jesus. That being said, the Bible talks a lot about giving, such as God giving His only son to die for our sins. This is something we can all put into action this holiday season!

I recently found a quote on Pinterest that says “There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward.” Personally I find more joy in giving than receiving! Whether you’re doing a gift exchange with friends or giving your mom a present Christmas morning, it’s impossible not to get a smile on your face! Now I’m not saying that receiving isn’t nice… Getting a gift (especially one off of your wish list!) is never a time to complain, but giving someone a present is one hundred times more satisfying!Chelsea Crockett - Give

I know for me, the simple thought behind a gift already makes it good no matter what might be under the wrapping paper. Not everyone has the money to go out and buy ten $50 gifts. Not every present has to be expensive! Homemade or DIY gifts are even more meaningful than just buying a shirt or gift card (and it won’t break the bank!).

Tis’ the season for giving, and you shouldn’t miss out! If you give this holiday, I promise your joy will be greatly multiplied!

“Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first.”

Love, Chelsea
