I would not consider myself a runner, but every once in a while I like to mix a good run into my workout routine. Whether you run one mile or 25 miles a week, having a good running playlist is vital to keep those feet moving and those arms pumping. Lots of times, the good workout songs with great beats sometimes have really nasty lyrics, and who wants to fill their head with garbage while they are working up a sweat? Lift your spirits and feel encouraged by your music while working out by adding these Christian songs to your running playlist.

  1. Go Hard by Lecrae
  2. Jesus Freak by DC Talkhqdefault
  3. Wake by Hillsong
  4. My Lighthouse by Rend Collective
  5. Move by Toby Mac
  6. Messengers by Lecrae
  7. It’s On by Superchick
  8. Greater by MercyMe
  9. Praise Like Fireworks – Rend Collective
  10. Ain’t No Grave – David Crowder (cool down)

Now snatch up your headphones and hit the trail!

Running is an incredible exercise, but many people claim it has its unwelcomed consequences.  From a body break-down to re-shaping your body in a negative way, many of these myths keep people from soaking in all the amazing benefits running has to offer!  Let’s break down these myths once and for all and throw our tennis shoes on!Chelsea Crockett- run

  1. “Running will make you bulky.” Running is an extremely slimming exercise that burns body fat.  If you place a lot of pressure on your quads and do uphill running, then you risk the potential of having bigger thighs (the healthy way).
  2. “I will start chaffing between my legs.” While this is very true for most people, it is an easy fix.  Try wearing leggings or spandex under running shorts to keep this from happening.
  3. “You have to run every day to get better.” Running every day can be harsh on the body, especially if you are a newbie.  Switching up your routine (elliptical, bike, etc.) will improve your running as well!
  4. “Running is bad for your body and joints.” The only thing that comes from running is a healthy body.  Never push your body too far.
  5. “Running is hard.” Running is one of the best stress relievers there is by releasing an abundance of endorphins to the brain.  You don’t have to be a long-distance or power runner to gain the benefits.  Going for a jog is very relaxing!

Who’s ready to go for a run with me?!

Things to Never Do Before a Workout

When I work out, I want to get the most out of it. I am a busy gal, much like all of you, and the little time I have to work out has to be maximized! There are a few things that can limit the effectiveness/how much you get out of your workout, and most of them are done even before you start your exercise routine! Here are 4 things to NEVER do before you work out.

  1. Chug a lot of water at once: Drinking a glass of water before a workout is no biggie, it can actually help fuel your run! But drinking a lot of water before you hit the gym can actually cause you feel really full and prevent you from having a good workout.starbucks-coffee-258x300
  2. Stress out: When your body is under stress, it releases a hormone that is a “muscle killer.” It tells your body to store fat, and it breaks down your muscle tissue. So, when you are prepping for a workout, try to leave stress at the door.
  3. Drink a cuppa Joe: It goes with the tip above. Caffeine in coffee can lead to higher levels of stress hormones in your body, which we mentioned above is not good. It can also cause dehydration and rapid heartbeat!
  4. Workout hungry: Not good! Food is fuel, and before you burn calories you actually need to intake some! Now, this doesn’t mean have a heavy meal, a banana or a bowl of cereal is always a good pre-workout snack.

If you want to maximize your workout don’t do these 4 things!

Flat abs are something that I think we all strive for. I mean, who doesn’t want a rock solid tummy?! Working out is only a small contributor to abs, believe it or not. As my PE teacher would say, “Abs are made in the kitchen!” And it is true! The food you eat has a huge impact on your body and your weight loss. Here are a few foods that help you in your journey to flat abs.

  1. Eggs: They are the perfect protein source! They have a great balance of essential amino acids that help build muscle, plus if you eat one for breakfast, you are less hungry as the day goes on! Less hungry = less snacking = less calories consumed!
  2. Apples: Apples are 85% water, which helps you feel full, and have 5 grams of fiber! This makes them an awesome Capture10midnight/midday snack! Plus, apples help promote healthy lungs and prevent some cancers, so an apple a day DOES keep the doctor away.
  3. Leafy greens: Leafy greens are things like kale, spinach, and broccoli! They are a great source of calcium which helps fuel your workouts, and help prevent cancer! Plus, they make great salads. 😉

Munch away!

How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

Lately I have been having issues with getting a good 8 hours of sleep in. Between school, church activities, school, filming and editing, and spending time with friends, I have a hard time getting my 8 hours in! Even though that is the case, I know how important a good night’s sleep is, and I try to take naps when I can to balance out my sleep schedule. Here are 3 ways you can get the most out of your sleep so you can have enough energy to conquer the world!

  1. The best time to nap is between 1-3 pm: Studies say that you are the most awake during the day between 7-9 a.m., and your alertness levels start to drop after 11 a.m. between 1 and 3 p.m. you are at the lowest energy level if your whole day. That is why this is the best time to take a quick nap! Now I know that you are probably in school during this time, but on breaks and weekends keep this in mind!images (1)
  2. Drink coffee before your nap: That sounds a little backwards, right? Caffine takes 20 minutes to start waking you up, so drinking a cup of joe right before you sleep will mean it kicks in right around when you wake up. This helps with that groggy “where am I and what year is it” feeling right after you wake up!
  3. Cut down the screen time: An hour or two before bed, it is important to limit the amount of time you are looking at your phone and the TV. The blue light that is given off from those devices has been shown to suppress the production of melatonin, which is what your body produces to help you sleep. If you are on your phone or watching tv before bed, dim the screen as much as you can to reduce that blue glow.

Hopefully these tips help you catch some zzzz’s.

3 Reasons you Should Kick Diet Soda to the Curb

Diet soda is good for you, right? I mean, it has the word “diet” in it, so it should help me lose weight. WRONG. It is actually the exact opposite!…

Diet soda is good for you, right? I mean, it has the word “diet” in it, so it should help me lose weight. WRONG. It is actually the exact opposite! Let me tell you how your diet soda habit can be ruining your health. Here are 3 reasons you should kick diet soda to the curb.

It leads to weight gain, not weight loss:

Research has found that drinking diet soda can actually cause you to eat unhealthier. People who drink diet soda actually crave sugar-packed foods like cookies and ice cream, which obviously increases daily calorie intake. Why does diet soda cause people to eat unhealthier foods? One explanation could be that because people think that their soda is “diet” then they can justify eating a cookie or muffin. Another explanation may be that when you know you’re not consuming any liquid calories, it might be easier to justify that extra order of fries or another order of chicken nuggets.r535f1e2241e07-no-more-diet-coke

  It confuses your body:

Fake sweeteners have a much sweeter flavor than real sugar. Over time your taste buds become used to the sweeter taste, so naturally sweet foods like fruit don’t taste as good. Plus, artificial sweeteners have the same effect on your body as sugar, causing your body to store fat and gain weight. So what is the point of artificial sweeteners if they aren’t any better for you than sugar?

There is no nutritional value:

When you drink diet soda you are not consuming calories, but you also aren’t taking in anything that is good for your body. The best zero calorie beverage is water! Spice it up with fruit or try sparkling water to change it up! By replacing water with diet soda your body’s processes are being negatively effected.

I know reaching for a diet coke when you are craving something sweet is tempting, but do your body a favor and go for water instead! You will be much better off in the long run when you do.

How to Maintain a Healthy Weight

Ladies, have you ever heard people say that losing weight is hard, but keeping it off is half the battle? It is so true. Losing weight takes work, and once…

Ladies, have you ever heard people say that losing weight is hard, but keeping it off is half the battle? It is so true. Losing weight takes work, and once you’ve got those pounds off you feel amazing! But, life happens, you get busy (and maybe lazy) and the weight starts creeping back. Here are 5 tips on how to maintain a healthy weight.

  1. Even a few minutes of exercise makes all the difference: Even if you can only get 15 minutes of exercise in, it is better than nothing. I get it, life is busy! But if I can squeeze in a few minutes of exercise, like jumping jacks and sit-ups while I watch TV, I am still getting my heart rate up and my body moving.LandingWeightLoss2
  2. Follow through: If you plan to work out, actually do it! You will feel accomplished and proud of yourself.
  3. Mix things up: I can get stuck in the same exercise routine, and I find myself dreading working out because it is boring. To prevent this, mix up your exercise tactics! Do yoga one day, run the next, and maybe try some Zumba! Keeps things interesting.
  4. Think positive: When you think about working out, or about skipping a workout, focus on how great you will feel afterwards. You know that great tired feeling you get in your muscles and the endorphin high you feel? Focus on that. It will motivate you to get your booty to the gym or out on the trail!
  5. Work out, even when you’re sore: That doesn’t mean go out and run ten miles. It means take a nice walk or do some yoga to work the lactic acid out of your muscles and stretch you out. It will help your muscles recover!

Maintaining your ideal weight isn’t a walk in the park, and it takes work, but you can totally do it, and you will feel so good about yourself!

In this generation, almost everything is done, or can be done, on our phones. They’re even used for keeping our workouts on track and putting us on the road to a more healthy lifestyle! Since I’ve been keeping up with my daily exercise, I’ve found tons of free apps that help us achieve these goals. Here are some of my top favorites!

If you’re a runner, all of the running apps will work just about the same: tracking your distance, telling you your pace, saving your times, etc. But one app that I’ve found donates money to a charity of your choice for however much you run, walk, or bike. It’s called Charity Miles and it’s completely free! For Chelsea Crockett - Sworkitevery mile you run or walk the app donates 25 cents to the charity you pick.

Another free app that’s not only for cardio is called Sworkit. On this app, you can pick from four different types of exercises: strength, cardio, yoga, and stretching. The app encourages you to simply fit in at least 5 minutes of one of these a day. How motivating is that? Just 5 minutes! Of course, you can pick a workout that goes up to 60, but you’ve got to start somewhere! In each category, there are several workouts to choose from, as well, such as full body, full intensity cardio, yoga for runners, etc. Check it out!

Lastly, if you’re way of staying healthy is more on the dieting side, download Lose It! This help app helps you lose weight or simply maintain the weight you’re currently at. It tracks your calorie intake, lets you set goals and plans, and even tracks your steps if you want it to.

Take advantage of the amazing technology we have at our fingertips and download one of these apps! I hope this helps you out!

I’m sure you’ve been seeing this famous meme everywhere, “But first, coffee”.  Celebs and Instagramers alike have been captioning pics and sporting tees with the clever quote; and I don’t blame them, I love my coffee!  It’s so easy to hop in my car and grab a white chocolate mocha from Starbuck’s, but the crash I feel afterwards isn’t worth it.  The amount of sugar in one of those coffees completely overrides every health benefit coffee has.  Between boosting metabolism and lowering your chance at heart disease, it’s only right that we play off these benefits.  Check out how to enjoy your favorite drink by turning it into a health food!Chelsea Crockett- cinnamon and cocoa

  • Avoid sugar at all costs! If you can’t imagine your coffee without a hint of sweetness, try a dash of stevia.
  • Instead of heavy creamers for flavor, try adding cinnamon or cocoa to your coffee!
  • Do not use “fat-free” or “low-fat” creams. These are usually packed full of high fructose corn syrup to make up for lost taste. If you really need creamer, stick to the real stuff.
  • Add a dash of skim milk for calcium.
  • Drink it black! This is the healthiest way to enjoy your coffee.

Hope you enjoy, Insiders!

When talking about beauty and health, most people think about makeup, medicine, or products!  Believe it or not, some of the best beauty and health “products” can be found in the grocery store aisle!  Lemons are an amazing, tasty fruit that can be used to heighten your beauty routine and create a healthier you!  Check out how you can start incorporating lemons into your daily routine. Chelsea Crockett- lemon and honey

  • Lemons are full of vitamin C. If you’re feeling under the weather, add lemon juice to your water or tea for a quick boost!
  • If you have acne, cut open a lemon, add a dash of honey to the slice, and rub it over your skin. Leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. If you’re trying to get rid of dark spots or scars, continue this process (minus the honey) daily until you see the results you’ve been looking for!
  • Mix together 1 tsp. with lemon juice for a homemade teeth whitener! Rub the paste on your teeth with a Q-Tip and leave on for 1 minute (this solution is very strong).
  • If you have oily skin, dab lemon juice on problem areas using a cotton ball before bed!
  • Create your own hair mask to get rid of dandruff by combining lemon juice with honey, coconut oil, and olive oil.
  • If you’re planning on being out in the sun all day, spritz your hair with lemon juice to naturally highlight it!

Next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up some lemons!  You’ll be happy you did!

You don’t have to be sweating your tail off in the gym or running 4 miles a day to lose weight, you can shed pounds by simply walking! Running and other cardio exercises can be really hard on your body and cause a lot of wear and tear on your joints. Here is how to make the most of your walk!walking-shoes-530

Walk faster: By simply walking faster you can burn way more calories and really improve your fitness! If you walk briskly you also reduce the risk of heart disease more than a run that burns the same number of calories.

How to walk faster: Stand tall with your shoulders back. This helps prevent lower back stress. Bend your arms at 90 degrees and swing your arm as you walk. Also, roll off each foot and push off your toes at the end of every stride. This keeps your foot on the ground a bit longer making for stronger, shorter faster steps.

Slip on the right sneakers: Having the right shoes is important! You don’t want to injure yourself. You want shoes that are flexible and roll with each step. You also want beveled heels that helps with heel-to-toe rolling. The next important feature is that they are designed for walking not running.

You don’t have to be a runner to burn major calories! Lace up your walking shoes and get on out there!

In the summer fun it’s easy to get caught up in the fruity summer drinks, fresh juices, or soda.  It’s also easy to get distracted and forget about water all together!  It is especially important to keep up with your water intake in the hot summer months.  Not only does it keep you healthy and hydrated, but it has a multitude of benefits for your body including clear skin, more energy, and good digestion.  Check out a few of my red flags below to see if you’re drinking enough water!Chelsea Crockett- drinking water

  1. Are you feeling tired all the time or constantly getting headaches? This could be the result of dehydration.  Water keeps our bodies most important organs functioning correctly.  If you aren’t getting enough H20, your body will start to slow down.
  2. Are you still hungry after a big meal? Chances are you didn’t take advantage of that large glass of water with your food!  Water can fill you up when you feel hungry, but shouldn’t. It also helps your stomach break down foods!
  3. Is your skin starting to look dull? Are large black circles forming under your eyes?  This could be the result of your completion dying for extra water!
  4. Are you achy? Are you still sore from that workout a week ago?  Water acts as a natural lubricant for joints, which making them move easier.  If you’re feeling like a 100 year old woman, drink a large glass of water!

I challenge you to up your water intake this summer!  You’ll be glad you did!
