I have had a serious sweet tooth recently. One of my favorite sweet treats is a warm muffin and a glass of milk! A great way to enjoy the yummy muffin taste but not all of the not-so-sweet calories is to make energy bites that taste like muffins. The fact that I can eat a snack that both gives me healthy energy plus tastes like lemon poppy seed muffins is too sweet for words.

Ingredients:

  • 3 scoops plant-based vanilla protein powder
  • ½ cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • ½ tablespoon granulated sweetener
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • 6 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 6 tablespoons water

In a large bowl, combine the lemon zest, sweetener, poppy seeds, oats, and protein powder. Add in the lemon juice and water and stir until it is mixed well. Use your hands to make balls out of the dough, it will make about 28 small balls. Place them into a plastic container with a lid and seal and store them in the refrigerator until you are ready to chow down.

These are a great post-workout sweet treat or a perfect snack to take on the go! Just pop a few into a baggie and stick them in your purse for later. These are so yummy and easy!

XOXO, Chels

I crave French fries a lot. Like a LOOOTTT. Who doesn’t? They are salty crunchy goodness…mmm… What if I told you that you can get all of the delicious crunch and taste of a French fry, but in a healthier form? Introducing: green bean fries!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1-2 pounds washed and trimmed fresh green beans
  • ½ cup flour
  • 2 large beaten eggs

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 425, then line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spray the foil lightly with cooking spray. In a bowl combine the bread crumbs and parmesan cheese. Put the flour in a smaller bowl and place the beaten eggs in a separate bowl as well. Take a handful of green beans and dip them into the flour, then eggs, then bread crumb mixture. Make sure they are coated with crumbs really good! After they are covered, place them in a single layer onto the baking sheet. Put the pan in the oven and bake for around 10-12 minutes. Let them cool, then eat them up!

This makes a great appetizer or snack! If you are looking to impress your family with your mad cooking skills, make these for them! They are also a good movie night snack instead of junk food.

Flat abs are something that I think we all strive for. I mean, who doesn’t want a rock solid tummy?! Working out is only a small contributor to abs, believe it or not. As my high school PE teacher would say, “Abs are made in the kitchen!” And it is true! The food you eat has a huge impact on your body and your weight loss. Here are a few foods that help you in your journey to flat abs.

  1. Eggs: They are the perfect protein source! They have a great balance of essential amino acids that help build muscle, plus if you eat one for breakfast, you are less hungry as the day goes on! Less hungry = less snacking = less calories consumed!
  2. Apples: Apples are 85% water, which helps you feel full, and have 5 grams of fiber! This makes them an awesome midnight/midday snack! Plus, apples help promote healthy lungs and prevent some cancers, so an apple a day DOES keep the doctor away.
  3. Leafy greens: Leafy greens are things like kale, spinach, and broccoli! They are a great source of calcium which helps fuel your workouts, and help prevent cancer! Plus, they make great salads. 😉

Munch away!

Don’t Do These Things Before Working Out

When I work out, I want to get the most out of it. I am a busy gal, much like all of you, and the little time I have to work out has to be maximized! There are a few things that can limit the effectiveness/how much you get out of your workout, and most of them are done even before you start your exercise routine! Here are 4 things to NEVER do before you work out.

  1. Chug a lot of water at once: Drinking a glass of water before a
workout is no biggie, it can actually help fuel your run or workout routine! But drinking a lot of water before you hit the gym can actually cause you feel really full and prevent you from having a good workout.water-bottle-fluoride-400x400
  2. Stress out: When yourbody is under stress, it releases a hormone that is a “muscle killer.” It tells your body to store fat, and it breaks down your muscle tissue. So, when you are prepping for a workout, try to leave stress at the door.
  3. Drink a cuppa Joe: It goes with the tip above. Caffeine in coffee can lead to higher levels of stress hormones in your body, which we mentioned above is not good. It can also cause dehydration and rapid heartbeat!
  4. Workout hungry: Not good! Food is fuel, and before you burn calories you actually need to intake some! Now, this doesn’t mean have a heavy meal, a banana or a bowl of cereal is always a good pre-workout snack.

If you want to maximize your workout don’t do these 4 things!

What to Eat for Breakfast to Shed Pounds

Was one of your New Year’s Resolutions to drop a few pounds? If so, then you need to know that you can use your breakfast as a tool to lose weight! Here is the perfect breakfast equation to help you start seeing results.

  1. Calories: Aim to consume about 300-350 calories at breakfast.
  2. Carbs: Your breakfast should be 45-50% carbs. Skip sugary foods or foods with enriched white flour, and choose whole grains, fruits, and veggies.DSC_4737
  3. Protein: 15-20% of your breakfast calorie intake should be protein. Getting protein at breakfast is key to keeping you satisfied throughout the morning. Eggs, dairy products, soy milk, protein powder in smoothies, and nuts and seeds are great sources of protein.
  4. Fats: Your breakfast should be about 10-15 grams of fat. This doesn’t mean bacon or cheese, it means nuts and seeds, avocado, and nut butter like peanut or almond butter!
  5. Fiber: ¼ of your daily fiber intake should be in the morning. Berries, apples, pears, greens, and other veggies, nuts and whole grains can help you get to your goals.
  6. Sugars: Use sweeteners like maple syrup, agave and honey in your breakfasts to avoid overdoing the sugar. Also, if you are eating fruits in the morning, they have natural sugars in them.

Isn’t it cool that one way to lose weight is to actually eat? We just have to be smart about what we fuel our body with.

I am not a huge “New Year’s Resolution” kind of girl, I prefer to just make goals. One of my goals this year is to eat healthier, so I have been looking for healthy recipes and healthy snack alternatives to help me reach my goal. That is when I came across the recipe for zucchini chips! They are low carb, low fat, salt-and-pepper-baked-zucchini-chips-700x980and are only 40 calories per serving! Count me IN. Here is how to easily make your own.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large zucchini
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • Salt

Preheat your oven to 225 degrees and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Slice your zucchini in thin slices and lay the slices on paper towels. Pat the moisture from the zucchini so that it will cook faster, then add them to a large bowl. Pour your olive oil into the bowl and mix the slices with the oil so that they are all evenly coated. Next, lay the slices out on the baking sheet and sprinkle salt over them. Make sure not to over-salt them! Bake the chips for 2 hours or until they start to turn brown and aren’t soggy any more. Take them out of the oven, let them cool, and then store them in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Trust me, they won’t last that long, they are just too good!

What is your favorite healthy snack?

After workouts, I usually have the serious munchies. Like, I could probably eat half a pizza and polish off a box of Girl Scout cookies. That feeling is totally normal after working out! You just worked off calories and energy, so now your body is craving more. Here is a healthy take on a yummy snack: protein rice crispy treats! They are a great easy snack to take with you and eat on your way home from the gym to keep you from grabbing the first morsel of food you see when you get home.

Ingredients:ricekrispiestreats-49

Mix the protein powder and water until it is smooth. Add the butterscotch and marshmallow flavors, then mix well. Fold in the marshmallow fluff, then fold in the cereal. Make sure they are mixed well, then press the mixture into a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze them for about an hour to make them harden, then cut into pieces and eat up! Store them in the freezer in a Ziploc bag for easy snacking.

These treats are so much better for you than regular rice crispy treats. They satisfy your sweet tooth and your protein intake, all at once!

How to Keep the Winter Weight Off

Ladies, have you ever heard people say that losing weight is hard, but keeping it off is half the battle? It is so true. Losing weight takes work, and once…

Ladies, have you ever heard people say that losing weight is hard, but keeping it off is half the battle? It is so true. Losing weight takes work, and once you’ve got those pounds off you feel amazing! But, life happens, you get busy (and maybe lazy) and the weight starts creeping back. Here are 5 tips on how to maintain a healthy weight.

  1. Even a few minutes of exercise makes all the difference: If you can only get 15 minutes of exercise in, it is better than nothing. I get it, life is busy! But if I can squeeze in a few minutes of exercise, like jumping jacks and sit-ups while I watch TV, I am still getting my heart rate up and my body moving.
  2. Follow through: If you plan to work out, actually do it! You will feel accomplished and proud of yourself.learn-to-love-your-healthy-lifestyle-to-keep-the-weight-off-880x880
  3. Mix things up: I can get stuck in the same exercise routine, and I find myself dreading working out because it is boring. To prevent this, mix up your exercise tactics! Do yoga one day, run the next, and maybe try some zumba! Keeps things interesting.
  4. Think positive: When you think about working out, or about skipping a workout, focus on how great you will feel afterwards. You know that great tired feeling you get in your muscles and the endorphin high you feel? Focus on that. It will motivate you to get your booty to the gym or out on the trail!
  5. Work out, even when you’re sore: That doesn’t mean go out and run ten miles. It means take a nice walk or do some yoga to work the lactic acid out of your muscles and stretch you out. It will help your muscles recover!

Maintaining your ideal weight isn’t a walk in the park, and it takes work, but you can totally do it, and you will feel so good about yourself!

As it gets cooler outside, working out in the great outdoors becomes easier. During the summer I can barely stand to be outside more than 20 minutes, let alone exercising outside! One plus to cooler weather is that you get to wear adorable warm workout gear! Here are my chilly weather workout essentials.

  1. Cute thermal leggings: When I run outside in the fall and winter I have to make sure my legs stay warm. Even walking to the gym from my car is chilly! So, that is where adorable workout leggings come in. There are so many cool patterns and styles out there, and they come in a variety of lengths for whatever the weather requires!fullsizerender-58
  2. A cute workout hoodie: I love thin workout jackets that are still warm but do not weigh you down. If you are on a run or doing an outdoor workout, a lightweight hoodie is a must. You can easily take it off if you get warm and wrap it around your waist, but it is always a good idea to overdress in case it is cooler than you think out there!
  3. Adorable ear warmers: Some people may think wearing ear warmers makes them look silly, but they just haven’t found the right pair! Keeping your head warm will ensure the rest of your body stays warm, so keep those ears nice and cozy. Plus, they keep your hair out of your face!

I love cold weather workout gear, don’t you? Sometimes I wear it to school even when I am not going to work out. It is just too cozy to pass up! 😉

Sometimes I feel like no matter how much I run, my stubborn fat just won’t go away! I recently started discovering a love for running and I am so excited to its impact on my health, but sometimes I feel like I’m not seeing results. If you cut out foods that are high in fat and incorporate these tips into your next run, you can kiss that belly fat goodbye!download

  1. Mix up your pace: Interval workouts are a surefire way to boost your metabolism. Instead of running at one set pace for your whole workout, alternate between running at a fast pace for about a minute and then running at a slow pace for 2 and a half minutes.
  2. Turn up the time: Just doing crunches wont trim your waist. You have to put the work and the time in! Every 5 minutes of running at a ten-minute mile pace burns about 45 calories, so think about that during your next run and it will motivate you to go just a bit longer!
  3. Kick up your knees: One way to strengthen your core is to do one minute intervals where you run with high knees. Concentrate on using your abs rather than your leg muscles and get those knees as high as you can!

I cannot wait to use these tips on my next run! I am so ready to kick belly fat to the curb.

Running outside is something I really enjoy. The scenery, the crazy amount of calories you can burn, and a super toned lower body are a few great results of running outside. But, you have to be safe and be aware of the injuries that you could cause when not prepared. Here is how to play it safe and get the most out of your outdoor runs.

  1. Pick a popular route: If you are just starting out, ask friends for their favorite routes, or research popular running trails in your area. You definitely don’t want to get lost! Also, by picking a popular trail, you won’t be alone and there is safety in numbers. I recommend grabbing a friend to run with, just to play it safe.df8f28845831b2802677c1d74f52317b
  2. Start soft and slow: Running on a treadmill is not good for your joints or your muscles, so if you are used to running on a treadmill and you start running outside, it will probably take some time to adjust. Also, if you are a beginner runner in general, start with short distances and slowly work your way up. It is better for your joints to start off slow. Also, surfaces like a running track, grass, or a bike trail are easier on your joints.
  3. Its more complicated than just running: Your running regime shouldn’t just be hitting the trail and then being done. Stretch first, then when you start running start off slow to warm your muscles up, then towards the end of the run slow down to start and cool your muscles off. Then stretch again. This is essential in preventing injuries!

Running outside is way different than running and working about inside, so you have to approach it totally differently. I never thought I would like running, but I gave it a try and now it is a great way to relieve stress and stay healthy!

I love the feeling I get after a workout, when my muscles are sore and I am exhausted but also feel completely energized at the same time. New studies are showing that, not only is exercise vital to your physical and mental health, it also saves you money!exercise2

How? Let me explain. Studies are showing that regular exercise can save you up to a couple thousand dollars a year in medical bills. Exercising for at least 30 minutes five times a week leads to fewer hospitalizations, and ER and doctor visits! I don’t know about you, but I will do almost anything to avoid having to go to the doctor. It is important,
though, that you are doing the right kind of exercise. Thirty minutes of moderate to intense activity, which is things like fast walking or lawn mowing, five days a week count. Also, 25 minutes of vigorous activity, like running or swimming, 3 days a week works too! Both of these options help boost your heart health and your overall health!

It is obvious that the most important reason to exercise is to keep you mentally and physically healthy, but if you needed even more motivation, just think of the money it saves you!

Do you have trouble falling asleep? Instead of taking sleeping pills that are not good for your health in the long run, why not try a natural solution? If you are having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, I have a better solution. Eat! Try eating any of the following five foods the next time you want to catch some quality ZZZzzz’s.

  1. Honey: Add some honey to warm herbal tea and sip on it a few hours before you plan on hopping in bed. The little bit of glucose found in honey lowers levels or orexin, which is a neurotransmitter that raises your level of alertness.
  2. Whole grains: If you are feeling awake at bedtime, grab some whole grain toast. Whole grains encourage the production of insulin, which helps get a natural sedative to your brain.54ff28585ff9b-rby-foods-awake-sleep-oatmeal-istock-de
  3. Bananas: Instead of a sleeping pill, grab a banana instead. These yummy yellow fruits are high in potassium, which is essential to having a deep night’s sleep. Bananas also contain tryptophan and magnesium, which makes them nature’s perfect sedative.
  4. Nuts: Grab a handful of nuts before bed to help boost serotonin levels in your brain, and to also give your body a healthy dose of magnesium and tryptophan .
  5. Oats: Melatonin, which is a hormone that helps controls your body’s sleep and wake cycle, is found naturally in oats. Have a small bowl of oatmeal before bed if you need help snoozing.

Eating my way to sleep sounds like a good plan to me. 🙂
