Selfless: Putting the Needs of Others Before Your Own

Are you seeking great things for yourself? Or seeking first great things for the kingdom of God?

These two questions are questions you should be asking yourself daily. Is what you’re doing primarily benefitting yourself or others?

In our society, people are quick to put themselves first. We love our image, our reputation, our own needs and wants. It’s easy to first take care of ourselves, then worry about those around us later.

Our generation is all about ourselves. We love the Instagram likes, the Twitter retweets, and the YouTube views. We’re concerned about our status and what others think of us. It’s a vicious cycle that doesn’t end until we force it to.

Not only does it benefit us in the long run, but God calls for us to have a selfless heart.

Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Looking to the interest of others before your own is the definition of selflessness. When we practice this, it becomes easier and more natural. It’s the most rewarding and humbling thing!

Romans 15:2,5 says, “Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up… May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.”

Selflessness can come in two forms. One of which is wanting to put others first without hopes of benefitting from it yourself. The second form is helping others to gain something from it and wanting to do so for your own benefit.

This is what Romans 15 is talking about. We need to please our neighbors for their own good, not for selfish gain. Although it can be hard to tell between the two, you can ask yourself what your true motives are.

Are you prioritizing someone else’s needs in order to feel better or to look good to those around you? When was the last time you lent a helping hand to a friend without them knowing? Or when was the last time you helped a stranger without posting about it on social media or telling anyone about it?

I challenge you this: show kindness and love to someone you normally wouldn’t… and to someone you normally would, too! Do it out of your own knowledge and desire without telling the world about it.

Once I started acting out of selflessness and putting others before myself, I gained more than I could’ve imagined.

You may lose money, time, or something else when you extend a hand to someone in need, but you gain so much more.

Live selflessly like Jesus and become more like him in every way possible!

So much of what we do revolves around our phones.  What we post on Instagram, knowing what the temperature is outside, and getting directions somewhere are just a few things we rely on our phones for!  If you find yourself constantly wanting to check or be on your phone, follow some of these tips to break your cell phone habit!

  • It’s sad to say most of us won’t go to sleep without checking our phones.  Put your phone in another room!  If you rely on it for your alarm, then put it out of reach so you’ll still wake up but not be tempted into checking it.
  • Pick two hours a day to go without your phone. Chelsea Crockett - Phone Meme I know I easily get distracted by checking social medias or watching YouTube videos on my phone.  Turn it off for an hour or two and work on homework, clean your room, or go for a run!
  • Set in on “do not disturb.”  A lot of times I can’t get off my phone because I’m constantly getting notifications from social media, group chats, etc.  Putting your phone on “do not disturb” means you still get the notifications without them popping up on your screen every two seconds!
  • Don’t check your phone first thing in the morning.  After a while, it becomes habit to check your emails, social medias, etc. as soon as your alarm goes off.  Studies show that automatically waking up to sit on your phone for a half hour is a bad start to your day and can cause added stress or anxiety!

Do you have a tip that helps you stay off your phone?  Share with me in the comments below!

Studying is one of my least favorite things. Don’t you wish you could just go to sleep and wake up a genius? I have picked up a few really great study tactics over the years and just thought I would share them! Sometimes switching up your studying routine can really benefit you!

Have you ever heard that certain smells can trigger your memory? They say that your sense of smell is the strongest sense in your body. That is _6638836why researchers say that if you put on scented lotion before you study and continue smelling it as you study, and then put on that same lotion before you take your test, the smell can help you remember everything you studied! I tried this out and was surprised to see that it actually helped!

Do any of you stay up late the night before a test, and then study even more in the morning right before the exam? Researchers say that that is the worst thing you can do for your memory! Avoid studying 12 hours before the test. Why? Give your brain a break! If you are trying to cram all of that information into your head right before the test, you are less likely to remember it because your brain is tired! I kid you not! You should study a little bit each day before the test, and then give your brain a break the night and morning before your test.

I have a pair of black suede wedges that I absolutely adore. The only problem with them? They are a half size too big! When I walk in them my feet slide out and I look like I am walking on a waterbed I am so unsteady! I was so upset when I realized that they were too big, so I did some research! Here is how to make shoes that are too big fit just right!

The first thing you need to do is fill the space where your foot should be. For me, the heal is where I struggle. My gosh darn feet won’t stay in my darn shoes! Fill the gap between your heel and the shoe with Dr. Scholl’s Rub Relief Strips, which come on a roll like Scotch tape but have a thick, cushiony feel. You can find these at any drug store! Another way is to wear cushions on the shoes where the balls of your feet should be. These will jack you up a bit chelsea crockettand keep your feet cozy for long wear! If you are wearing shoes that will be covered by pants, then just throw on an extra pair of socks…or two..:) Sometimes, if you are wearing a dark pair of tights, you can get away with wearing a dark pair of ankle socks under your tights.  A cheap way to make your shoes fit, shove a few cotton balls in the toes of your shoes!

Hopefully these tips help you slip into your favorite pair of too-big shoes!

Hey everyone!

Running is a perfect exercise to get fit and stay fit.  Most teens like to stay active, feel healthy, and be in shape.  Most sports, whether it be basketball, soccer, etc., require some running in order to be a good player.  Other sports, such as cross country, track, etc., require almost only running.  Here are some helpful tips that you can use when training for your season or for simply getting into shape!Chelsea Crockett - Running Article

First off, being hydrated is a necessity for almost everything.  Whenever you go for a run, make sure you have water by your side.  Especially after your run, be sure to drink lots of water to replenish any nutrients you may’ve used up during your exercise.  H2O should start to become your “best friend” while trainingJ.

Second, purchase a pair of good running shoes.  Having good arch support and cushion in your shoes is much needed for any runner.  You can make sure you purchase the right pair of shoes by getting fitted at a local running/sports store.

Lastly, always have a buddy to run with.  You and your friend should run where there are lots of people so you’re never alone.  You want to avoid high traffic areas.  Safety should be your #1 concern when it comes to running!  Before and after your run, be sure to stretch out your muscles to keep from getting any injuries.  Oh yeah….I almost forgot…to help your run go quickly, put on your headphones and listen to your favorite music!  Before you know it, your workout is over!

Good luck!

Top 4 Reasons Why You Aren’t Seeing Results

Are you kicking booty in the gym, running as much as you can, and trying to eat right but seeing no results? Not only is it discouraging, but it is also a huge bummer when this happens! Not to worry, though, that can easily be fixed! Here are the top 4 reasons you are not seeing results.

  1. You aren’t lifting weights: Cardio is great for your heart health and a great way to lose weight, but if that is the only kind of exercise you are doing and you are leaving the weights in the corner to rot, that is no bueno! After lifting weights, your muscles are burning through calories hours after your workouts, whereas with cardio after you are done, you’re done.
  2. You are doing the same ‘ol same ‘ol every time: If you aren’t mixing up your routine in the gym that can hinder you! Your body gets used to the exercises and isn’t challenged, so you won’t see improvements!
  3. No food discipline: You can go to the gym and kick some serious boootay, but if you come home and eat half a peperoni pizza and three chocolate chip cookies then all of your hard work is for nothing. Be mindful of what you are eating! Remember, weight loss is 20% of exercise and 80% of what you eat.
  4. Sipping away: If you drink a lot of sugary drinks, it can really set you back! Juice, soda, coffee, all of those have
chelsea crockett soda tons of added sugars and carbs that you just don’t need! Opt for herbal tea or lemon water when you are looking for a drink other than water.

2. She has Inner beauty.6122149462958582_6bIj0GJ8_f

The boys say that a girl who has a beautiful, genuine personality is the most attractive girl of all. They told me that a girl who has a great personality is more fun to be around! They also make you feel good when you are with them and they make you want to be a better person.

3. She gives you space and freedom.

The guys said that they love a girl that can give them some space! They like a girl that can trust them and let them chill with their friends and give them space. Needy girls are a no-no according to them! They also say that they like girls who are flexible with plans and go with the flow.

The boys told me that the most annoying thing that a girl can do is to flirt with other boys while they are dating. They told me that “If you are in a relationship, then don’t flirt with other guys! Duh!”

5.She takes care of herself.

This is the last piece of insight the boys gave me. They said that they like a girl that knows how to take care of herself! They like a girl that can dress up for a date, but can also dress down when hanging out and watching movies. They like a girl that can feel confident about themselves!

I hope that this info gives you a little insight into the male mind!

Skin can be tricky.  It always seems to break out at the most random times or get sunburnt when you’re barely outside!  Our skin doesn’t make sense 99% of the time and that can be very frustrating.  I know how hard it can be to determine what products are right for your skin.  So…I’ve come up with some easy tips to help you all out:

First, you need to decide whether your skin is sensitive or not.  I know what you’re thinking, “How can I tell?”  If your skin tends to sunburn easily then it is probably sensitive.  Another way to find out is to pay attention to see if you blush easily.  That sometimes indicates sensitive skin as well!  What I suggest for you, is Clinique.  Their brand has several options for those with sensitive skin and they work amazingly!Chelsea Crockett - Clinique

Second, you need to figure out if your skin is primarily dry or oily.  If your skin feels greasy or looks shiny, then it is safe to say you most likely have oily skin.  If it’s mostly dry and sometimes flaky, then you can obviously tell which skin type you have.  For those with oily skin, I suggest using a powder foundation.  And for those with dry skin, use a liquid foundation.  If you think about it, that makes perfect sense!  The foundation will set well on your skin and won’t slide off so easily.

Do you have any other tips?  If so, let me know below!

Common Mascara Mistakes

Mascara is a girl’s best friend and most powerful asset. There are common mistakes that every girl makes when dealing with mascara. Want to know what they are and how to amend them? Read on!

Mistake #1: Using Expired Products

After about 3 months, you should pull an ‘N Sync and say “Bye Bye Bye” to your mascara. When it is this old it starts to grow bacteria inside the tube and on the wand. This can cause you to have red, itchy eyes or even pinkeye! By this time the mascara will probably be dried out anyway, so it just makes since to replace it!images (3)

Mistake #2: Pumping the Wand
When you are getting ready to apply your mascara and you pump the wand in and out of the tube to coat it, you are actually adding air to the tube which dries out the mascara! It also causes it to clump and even flake. Try and dip the wand as little as possible to avoid drying it out as long as possible!

Mistake #3: Not Curling Your Lashes
Mascara will give your lashes a lift, but to get that red carpet look, you will need to grab your lash curler. Make sure that you use the curler BEFORE you apply mascara. Curling afterward can cause breakage! Yikes!

Now that you know how to care for your mascara, bat those beautiful lashes ladies!

Oily skin is totally obnoxious, am I right? What I didn’t know is that there is a super quick, easy way to help combat oily skin! When I discovered it I knew that I just HAD to share it with you all! Check it out, all you will need is:

–          Cotton balls

milk of magnesia chelsea crockett

–           Milk of Magnesia

Milk of Magnesia is found in drug stores and is often used to combat stomach aches. This item can be used as a primer before applying makeup, but watch out because it tends to cake up if not smoothed out, or it can be used as a facial mask. If your face is crazy oily then add more coats. Just pour some Milk of Magnesia onto your cotton ball and spread it on your face for 15 minutes. After the time has passed and the product has dried, then scrub it off with warm water and soap! Easy, right?

If you are feeling super oily, try this product on for size!

Are you in a long distance relationship? When I talk to my friends who have been in or are in one, they say that it is really tough. When you are dating someone, you want to be with them and spend a lot of time with them, but when you are in a long distance relationship, you only get to see your boo thang every once in a while. Here are some tips for my ladies who are strolling down the “long distance relationship” road.

  1. Forget the haters. Those people that tell you your relationship will never work? Don’t pay them any attention. Surround yourself with people who will bring you up and support you and help you through the times that you are missing your boy so bad it hurts.4f60dbba30514.preview-300
  2. Plan phone/Skype dates. Communication is important in any relationship, but even more so in long distance relationships. Make plans for a Skype date, like a time and day. Dress up, put on some makeup, do your hair, and act like you are really going on a date. Talk about any and everything with them.
  3. Have a life. What I mean is, don’t sit around the house and mope about missing your boy toy, and don’t not go out and have fun because you think that you can’t because you have a boyfriend. Trust is big, so trust your guy to be able to go out with his friends and have a good time. At the same time, he needs to trust YOU too.

You can do it, ladies! As my boy Hunter Hayes would say “Love don’t know what distance is.” You got this.

Ladies ladies ladies…No shave November may be underway, so razor bumps aren’t a huge issue at the moment. Although they are not top priority at the moment, it is always good to know how to avoid those obnoxious, annoying bumps for good. Here are some tips on how to prevent razor bumps!

-Don’t shave every day

Don’t shave so often. Let your hair grow out a bit before shaving it again. Give your bumps time to heal and use the razor every other day at the most.

Shave under the warm shower and rinse off with cold water

Warm water will soften your hairs and make your skin less prone to irritation. When you are done shaving, cold water will close up the pores, which prevents infection and irritation.

-Use a shaving cream

Chelsea crockett shaving cream

Shaving cream will moisturize your skin as well as soften your hairs, making them easier to shave. Bumps appear more easily when your skin is dry and prone to irritation. Also, moisturize after you shave because it will reduce redness and irritation and decrease the probability of you getting razor bumps.

-Always use new and sharp razors

Dull razors will irritate the skin around the hair follicle and cause ingrown hairs.  Old and rusty blades can also carry  tons of bacteria, which can be transferred to the skin during shaving. This will not help your existing razor bumps to heal! If you don’t have a new blade, always use alcohol to clean your razor.

The holidays are a big travel day for most people. Are YOU traveling anywhere soon? If so, check out these handy packing tips!

1. Make a list of everything you need to pack and check it regularly as you are packing. Add your essentials to the list first, and then you can add extra items to the list once you have the important stuff down. This allows you to make sure you don’t leave any precious cargo behind!

2. Check the weather of your destination so you can know exactly what to pack! You don’t want to pack a parka if you are headed to Hawaii! Duh! Just make sure you are prepared for whatever weather the destination may throw at you.chelsea crockett packing

3. Organize your belongings so it is quick and easy to unpack and find just what you are looking for. Pack things that are not super important on the bottom of your bag, and then pack things that you know you will need right when you get there on the top. Genius!

I hope that you have safe travels and that you have a safe journey wherever life takes you this Holiday season!

Washing your hair: You’re doing it wrong! I had no idea that I was making so many mistakes! Here is an inside look on how to get the most out of your shower.

 1. If you have long hair, condition first.

Yes, you read right! If your hair is past your shoulders, you can protect your ends by running a small amount of conditioner through them and lightly rinsing, before you shampoo. This not only keeps your ends healthy, it will boost your shine!

2. Lather up at the scalpwoman-shampooing

You really only need to lather up at your scalp! The hair closest to the scalp is the youngest and oiliest, and the hair at the ends is the oldest and driest! The best way to shampoo is from roots to ends.

5. Don’t rinse and repeat.
There is no need to wash your hair twice.  You can avoid stripping and drying out your hair by only shampooing once. If your hair is super oily, then you can lather up a second time.

I hope these tips give you shiny, voluminous hair, ladies!

Do any of you brush your hair in the morning and feel like you are losing entirely too much hair? I know the feeling. When you start shedding hair, it is obnoxious! I find my hair EVERYWHERE! My parents do too :P. What I didn’t know is that you can use coffee to stop your hair from shedding! You can use any caffeine product, actually, because caffeine blocks the hormone responsible for hair loss, dihydrotestosterone (try saying that 5 times fast!). Want fuller, thicker hair? Try a coffee rinse!

How to do a coffee rinse:

coffee

1.Brew your coffee and let it cool. How much you will need will depend on how long and thick your hair is.

2. Rinse your hair with water to get it wet and then squeeze the excess water out. Using a pitcher, pour the coffee over your hair while using a second bowl to catch the excess coffee. Pour the coffee that you have caught in your bowl over your hair, catch the extra again, and then pour it over your hair once more for a total of 3 rinses.

3. Let the coffee sit on your hair for a few minutes and then rinse it out. If you have lighter hair, then do not leave the coffee in as long because it can discolor your hair a bit!

4. Shampoo and condition as you usually would.

Try this awesome rinse and let me know how it works out for you!

XOXO, Chels
