Keeping Christ at the Center of Your Home

Being a newly married woman, I now have a home that’s solely my own. It is a new foundation for my husband and I that will eventually hold a family, host our friends, experience so many “firsts,” and so much more!

Although we plan to move throughout our life together, each house will be our home, where we get to experience life and make it our own! I’ve always understood the importance of keeping Christ at the center of our home, but I didn’t realize how intentional you have to be when you’re actually the head of the household.

There are several verses throughout the Bible that stress the importance of building a home centered around Christ.

Matthew 7:25 says, “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Regardless of arguments, disappointments, or negativity that you experience inside your home, if Christ is your foundation, it will not be shaken. As perfect as you want your life to be, there will always be these three things that I mentioned above, but what makes the world of a difference is who your #1 priority is when life gets hard.

Proverbs 24:3-4 says, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

Think about how you can grow wisdom, understanding, and knowledge inside your home. I know for me and Nick, we like to set aside time to be completely in the word with no distractions. Reading the Bible gives us the knowledge of how we should live our lives as Christ followers and it continues to amaze us every day.

Through listening to sermons, talking to God, reading devotionals, etc., we get the opportunity to gain this godly wisdom and understanding that God offers to us. It makes such a huge difference when our mindsets, actions, and words are Christ-like and mirrored after the Lord.

I remember listening to a podcast a few months ago that talked about what people often put at the center of their home. For some people, it may be money and finances. For others, it may be the pursuit of happiness regardless of what that may mean for them. And for some, the sole center of their home may be their careers.

Regardless of what the world around you is doing, I encourage you to make a list of ways you can keep Christ at the center of your home. If you need a starting point, begin by going to church every Sunday. Pray before each meal and as a family before you go to bed. These small changes welcome God into your home and allow him to lead each and every one of you throughout your life. His presence is powerful, comforting, and will fill your home with love, grace, and so much more!

The Power of Prayer Walks

If you are unfamiliar with the term “prayer walk,” then you’re about to learn how you can pray for your home, your school, and the people around you! Prayer walks involve praying for the places, and people in those places, where we desire to see God’s presence.

Prayer walking is one of the coolest things to do, especially when you see your prayers eventually fulfilled right in front of you.  God promises that when we ask for something in his name, he will deliver. So why not try to ask God for blessings over the places you go and the people in your life?

When it comes to prayer walks, think of what that place needs from the Lord. If you want to pray over your house, pray for your roommates, your family, or whoever else you live with. Pray for security and safety over your house and the people in it.

Ephesians 6:18 says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

No matter where you are, it’s always a good time to pray! There is no such thing as a bad prayer. Present any and every request to God and he will always hear you!

Start with a prayer walk in your home. Whether that be your apartment, your dorm room at college, or wherever else you call home. Once you’ve prayed over your house, take a prayer walk through your neighborhood! Then, do the same on your drive to work, praying for every house you pass and every community you drive through. You never know which places are in definite need of prayer!

You can even use verses from the Bible to guide you through your prayer walk to get some ideas of what to ask God for.

2 Samuel 7:28-29 says, “Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.”

Ask God for blessings over your home. There is nothing too big or too small to request from God! Ask God to grant grace, security, health, etc. to your home and any other blessings you can think of!

Another verse I like to think of is Psalm 122:7. It says, “Peace be within your walls and security within your towers.” Let’s pray for peace and safety no matter where we’re at. Especially in our houses, apartments, dorms, or wherever we find ourselves spending most of our time, ask God for these things.

After doing a prayer walk, write down the things you prayed for. Then you can eventually look back and see how it has impacted your home! 🙂

Start today with as quick as a 5-minute prayer walk! See what and who needs prayer, and start there!
