In the winter time is when I wear the most lipstick. I like how dark reds and maroon lips look paired with a stylish winter ensemble. Plus, I go to a lot more parties and gatherings because of the holidays so I dress up more in the winter, which means I wear lipstick more often. If you want to get the prettiest pucker, follow these lipstick rules!

  1. Get off to a good start: Before you apply lipstick, exfoliate the dead skin off of your lips with a damp washcloth. This gets your lips prepped and ready for application!
  2. Know your stuff: You should also know what lipstick formula works best for you! Matte formulas last long, but they also dry your lips out a bit. Creamy formulas hydrate your lips, but they arent long-lasting. Experiment with different ones and find which one works best for you!
  3. Go bold: If you want your lip color to be bold, line your lips with a lip pencil before applying lipstick.fullsizerender-67
  4. Be wise about blotting: Blot your lips with a tissue in between applications by gently pressing a tissue to your lips. Just don’t put a tissue in between your lips and close down on it because this may cause the color to rub off.
  5. Top it off: Top your lipstick off with some gloss. The shine helps your lips look plumper and is also moisturizing.

Follow these rules to get the perfect pout!

Red Lipstick: Do’s and Dont’s

Red lipstick is the ultimate fashion statement. Wanting to dress up an outfit? Put on some red lipstick. Feeling a little sassy? Put on some red lipstick. Need a confidence boost? Put on some red lipstick. Crimson lips are especially popular in the cold weather months that are coming up! Red lips are surprisingly versatile, but you also need to know how to properly apply it before you dive right in! Here are the dos and don’ts.

Do:fullsizerender-47

  • Some prep work: If you want your lipstick to last, then exfoliate and hydrate them.
  • Keep your eyes simple: You want your look to be balanced, so lean towards a classic look like a smoky or cat eye when you are wearing red lips.
  • Know your undertone: How do you choose your perfect shade of red? By knowing your skin undertone! Cool undertones look best with cool reds, and warm undertones look best with warm reds.

Don’t:

  • Skimp on lip liner: This step is too vital to skip! Liner helps define your lips and keeps your color from bleeding.
  • Be scared to layer: Layer your lip color and find new shades that you love! Instead of going out and buying a new lip color, layer colors you already have and see if they work for you!
  • Wear with bright colors: Just like we said earlier, you want to keep the rest of your makeup simple when you do red lips. Stay away from pinks, blues, greens, and other bold shades that will clash with your lips.

Now you are fully prepared to rock the socks off of red lipstick!

How to Prep Your Lips for Lipstick

There are some days when the last thing I want to do is put on a full face of makeup, and then there are days when I straight up don’t have time to do it! On those days, I try to at least wear some sort of lip color to give my face some warmth and to make it look like I at least sort of tried to look put-together. But, in order to be able to really truly rock lip color, your lips need to be prepped for it. Here are two ways to prep your lips for lipstick so your lips don’t feel like they’re being sucked of moisture and also so their cracks and crevices aren’t showcased.stila-stay-all-day-liquid-lipstick

  1. Sugar scrub: If your lips are dry, use a sugar scrub to clear the dead skin off. It is more gentle than a salt scrub and is better for the delicate skin on your lips.
  2. Toothbrush method: Take a clean toothbrush and use it to scrub the dead skin from your lips. Not as sweet as the first option, but just as effective! The only difference? Most of us have a toothbrush on hand, but not all of us have a sugar scrub sitting around.

Both methods will give you a clean, smooth surface for your lipstick. Having lipstick stick to your dead skin and clump is always an awkward look, so this prevents that scenario all together! If you want a more polished pout, try one of these two methods before applying your lip color!
