I recently came across a sign outside a church that asked this question: “What are you worshipping? A person, a possession, or a profession?” It really stuck with me and weighed on my heart for quite some time.

Many times throughout life, you will find yourself placing things above God, no matter how good, holy, or obedient you try to be. It’s part of human nature to go through phases of prioritizing things over others, whether it’s intentional or not.

So, consider these three categories: people, possessions, and professions. What do you struggle with placing below God and surrendering to him?

Maybe you’re in a relationship and your boyfriend is of utmost importance at this point in your life. He became your life and what you look forward to each and every day. Instead of going to God for validation, guidance, or joy, you look to him to fulfill all your needs. This is an example of prioritizing a person over God.

Maybe it’s your phone, your computer, your Netflix account, etc. that takes you away from God. I know there are times when my phone can act as a distraction while I’m spending time in the Word and pulls my mind and attention elsewhere. This is an example of prioritizing possessions over God.

Or maybe it’s your bank account that gets you out of bed in the morning. You’re so focused on having a successful career that money is the driving factor in your life. You never truly feel satisfaction because you’re always waiting for that next paycheck. This is an example of making your job your #1 priority.

When I think of those chasing after a career, money, success, etc., I think of Matthew 6:24. It says, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Desiring a successful career is one thing, but to become obsessed with your job is another. When we put our hope and trust in the Lord, good things will come our way! He knows our past, present, and future and will guide us into what’s best for our lives.

People, possessions, and professions are good things to focus on throughout your life. It’s good to prioritize the important things that you care deeply about whether that be your boyfriend or your career, but it becomes a problem when we lose sight of God in the process.

Write down the top 10 things you consider your greatest priorities. Then consider how each one plays a role in your life. Does it take you away from God or push you closer to him? Do you often seek it out for satisfaction and fulfillment? These are good questions to ask yourself to know if you’re living for the right or wrong things.

God wants your love, attention, and dependence. Don’t ignore him by giving yourself to temporary, worldly things. Talk to him and let him guide your focus onto what’s important: God’s joy, love, peace, and eternal satisfaction!

3 Things to Prioritize as A Follower of Christ

Being a follower of Christ is not always easy. There are times when we have to put certain things above others, even when our own desires are completely the opposite….

Being a follower of Christ is not always easy. There are times when we have to put certain things above others, even when our own desires are completely the opposite.

Part of giving your life to Jesus is knowing that sacrifices will have to be made. You may not always want to sacrifice your time, sleep, independence, pride, etc., but God makes it clear in the Bible that following him will mean just that at times.

In Colossians 3:1-3 says, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”

God asks us to prioritize certain things throughout the Bible. He commands us to leave our old ways behind and follow the path he created for us! Here are a few things to prioritize throughout your everyday walk with Christ.

Quiet, devoted time with God.

You may think that you spend enough time with God but do you really? I used to pray when I woke up and before I went to bed and think I gave God all the time I owed to him, but I was so wrong. He wants us to give up certain things, such as sleep, a Netflix episode, an extra half hour hanging with friends… to be able to devote to him.

I never understood the importance of this uninterrupted time in the Word until I really made it a priority. I realized not only did this time help me grow in my relationship with Christ, but it allowed me to learn more about who God is and what he expects of me as his disciple.

Sharing your faith.

1 Peter 3:15 says, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have…”

Although it may be awkward or uncomfortable, God commands us to share our faith and make disciples. It doesn’t always have to mean sharing your testimony or intentionally bringing up God in a conversation. It could be as simple as witnessing through your words and actions, and extending the love of Christ to those around you. Always be prepared to give the reason for your faith!

Godly desires over worldly desires.

This is something the Bible addresses time and time again throughout it. Taking up our cross and following Christ means that we are a new creation in Him. We no longer should satisfy the desires of our flesh, but satisfy the desires of the Lord. The more time we spend in the Word and in communication with God, the easier this becomes.

I challenge you to prioritize these three things this week. For only seven days, make a conscious effort to wake up early to spend time with God, start up a conversation with your friend about your faith, or say no to something that you know is sinful behavior. See how much you can grow in your relationship with God in just this short amount of time. Just one week can be the start of making these priorities a habit! I promise you, you won’t regret it. 🙂

Love, Chels

The Things You Can Control vs. The Things You Can’t

As human beings, we like to be in control of every aspect of our lives. It’s normal for us to want to have a grip on everything that’s going on around us and to try make it this way or that way.

There are things we can control, such as our attitude, our actions, and our priorities. That being said, there are also things we have no control over, that we have to give to God and trust with Him instead.

Things You Can Control

  1. Your attitude.

Although this can be one of the hardest things to control, your attitude can affect the people around you, your mindset, and your perspective. You don’t always have to vocalize any time something is annoying you or anytime you’re in a bad mood. Using your attitude to make a situation better or to motivate others to do the same is an easy way to turn a bad day around!

  1. Your actions.

Along with your attitude, you can also control your actions. Actions speak so much louder than words and they can represent who you are as a person. Your true self is shown through how you treat your friends, family, and those around you.

Matthew 5:16 says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Through our actions, we can witness to those who may not yet know Jesus!

  1. Your priorities.

Throughout life, your priorities are constantly going to change. One year, your top priority could be your new job, followed by the new person your dating or your social life. I’ve realized that when I’m not prioritizing God first, I fall behind in so many other areas of my life, as well.

Things You Can’t Control

  1. Time.

As much as we want to have control over the timing in our life, most of the time we can’t. Acts 1:7 says, “He said to them: ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.” It’s not our responsibility to pick when things do or don’t happen in our lives. We need to give up our grip over the things we can’t control, especially when God already has His perfect timing!

  1. The future.

I think this is the thing most people struggle with trying to control. It’s something that can terrify you if you let it. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

If we put all our trust in Jesus Christ, we have no reason to worry about our future, for his plans are only to prosper us and give us hope and security. We don’t have to control our future, especially when our heavenly father already does that for us!

  1. Other people.

Although we can’t control the actions of other people, we can control who we surround ourselves with. If someone is draining and discouraging to be around, replace them with someone who builds you up and encourages you! People that push you to be a better person in Christ are the people you want in your life!

If you’re one that struggles with this, start deciding what in your life is out of your control. Take it day by day, and focus on the things you can change, instead of the things you can’t!

How to Prioritize God in Your Life

Prioritizing God is a priority in itself.  For me, I always try to put God above everything else in my life, whether it be my friends, my relationship, school, etc.  Although it can be hard, it is so so important and you will see the benefits of knowing God on a deeper level!  Here are a few ways that work for me when I’m struggling with prioritizing God!

  • Set your eyes on the prize and know that you have an amazing reward waiting for you in heaven.  If you think about standing before God one day, you’ll want to truly know him on such a deep and personal level!
  • Set your focus and write it on paper.  I fully believe that writing something down will truly help you stick to it.  Focus on your spiritual goals and how you want to grow in your faith, then write it down!
  • Schedule your time each day or week, and again, write it down.  If you have a planner, write down when you’ll spend time with God each day.  It will really help you stick to your plan and get in your quiet times daily! 🙂
  • Set up accountability.  Accountability is so much more important than you realize.  Go out of your way to find someone that will check up on you and make sure you’re putting God first.  Sometimes having a little extra help isn’t a bad thing!

I hope this helps you figure out how you can put God first in your life!

XOXO – Chelsea
