If you’re still in high school, you may be unfamiliar with the term “formal.”  Formals are kind of like the college version of a homecoming dance put on by a fraternity or sorority!  If you’re new to the college world and need some advice on an upcoming spring formal, here are some tips and pointers!

  • You don’t have to have a date in order to go to formal. Chelsea Crockett - Romper More girls go solo than you think.  Get dressed up, grab a group of friends, and go have fun by yourself!
  • Although you should dress up, dresses aren’t a must.  You can rock a fancy romper and heels (such as the picture on the right) or a stylish jumpsuit.  Unlike high school homecomings, you’ll see tight and loose dresses, dresses and rompers, wedges and heels, etc.
  • Don’t be afraid to hit the dance floor.  Unlike high school dances where it can sometimes be awkward to dance, most people will be dancing at formal!  No one cares what you look like or whether or not you have a date.  Get out of your chairs and dance like crazy!
  • You can make plans before and after just like you did for high school dances.  Get ready with your friends beforehand, make dinner reservations, and host an afterparty!
  • Formals are a lot more laid back, and a lot less stressful, than prom and homecoming.  Like I said, you don’t have to bring a date or make a day full of plans surrounding the event.  Just simply have fun!

Have fun at your formal and make lots and lots of memories! 🙂

Love, Chelsea

If you are wearing a backless dress or a dress with some back showing for prom, then listen up! Today I am going to give you a few exercises to do that will help get your back toned and tight for prom! A lot of times we skip workout out our back and shoulders because we want to avoid getting “man shoulders” but these exercises aren’t meant to make you bulk up, they’re to tone. Plus, all you need is two dumbbells in your desired weight. I go for 5 pounders.

  1. Dumbbell shrugs: Grab a dumbbell in each hand and hold them down by your sides. Raise your shoulders as high as possible, meaning shrug them, and then lower them. Do these as many times as you want.
  2. Rocking plank: Get into your normal pushup plank position and then roll forward on your toes so they are pointed and flat on the floor. Then roll back to your starting position. The rocking motion is what tones up your back!
  3. Dumbbell front and side raise: This move works both your arms and your back. Score! Hold your dumbbells in both hands with your palms facing down. Make sure to keep your legs shoulder-width apart and to keep your elbows straight. Raise your arms in front of you, then out to the sides. Repeat until it burns!
  4. Side plank: These are great for sculpting your back as well as your side abs! If you don’t know how to do these, it is super simple. Just lay on your side, then push up on your forearm. Do for 30 seconds, then switch sides.

I can’t wait for prom, can you?!

5 Prom Myths for the First-Year Prom Goers

My first time going to prom, I had several questions and expectations about what prom would actually be like.  You may be thinking that prom is just like the movies, which in some ways it is… But in others, it’s just the opposite.  Here are 5 busted prom myths for the first-year prom goers!

  • You can’t go if you don’t have a date. Wrong!  Chelsea Crockett - PromYou can absolutely go solo!  Don’t let not having a date stop you from having a great night with your friends.  Make tons of memories whether you go with someone or not.
  • Prom is always expensive. That’s not always the case!  You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on your dress, shoes, etc.  If you shop smart, you can look like a million bucks at prom without spending much at all.
  • Prom night is going to be just like it is in the movies… Not exactly! Although prom night has a lot of potential, don’t stress if it’s not the absolute best night of your life.  That being said, it can also be everything you want it to be!
  • You absolutely HAVE to go to prom. Although I highly encourage it, you don’t have to go to prom!  If it’s not really your thing, don’t feel like it’s mandatory.
  • Winning prom queen is the most important thing about prom. Although prom king and queen are a pretty big deal, it’s not the only thing that happens at prom.  Don’t feel too bad if you’re not on the list of nominees!

Now that you know a little more of what to expect, make the most of your prom night!  Remember, you only do high school once!

Whether it’s your first prom or your third, it never gets any less exciting!  I know I’m not the only one who loves shopping for the perfect prom dress.  Figuring out the right style, color, and all around look that I’m searching for can be tough, but once I find the right one, it’s worth it!  If you need a place to start, here are some pointers on which color dress would look best on you!

Chelsea Crockett - Prom DressIf you have dark skin, any pastel or bright shade will most likely look good!  Try colors on the warmer end of the spectrum such as pinks, yellows, purples, etc.  These will bring out the warmness in your skin tone and highlight your skin’s glow.

If you have tan/olive skin, focus on complimenting your undertones.  Olive skinned girls are lucky because almost any color will look good!  I suggest a deep green or red, maybe even a burgundy shade like the dress on the left.  Especially if you have dark hair, try one of these colors!  If you want to really highlight your skin tone, try a bright pink that will make you look extra tan!

For the fair skinned ladies out there, pay attention to the undertone of your skin, whether it’s warmer or cooler toned.  If you have naturally rosy cheeks and a warmer skin tone, try earthy shades.  These will look beautiful on you!  If you have cooler undertones, look into purples, pinks, and blues!

I hope this narrows down your search options so finding the perfect prom dress can be a little easier!

Prom Prep: DIY Ways to Break-in Your Heels

Prom season is right around the corner and it’s never too early to start prepping for it.  Not only is it a priority to look good on prom night, but to be comfortable, too!  I’d say the most painful part of the prom process is wearing heels for hours during pictures, dinner, dancing, etc.  I found a few DIY ways to break-in your heels that’ll make wearing them all night a piece of cake!

  • If your heels are too tight, stretch them out using ice!  Fill up two freezer bags with water and seal them tightly.  Place the bags in your heels then put them in the freezer until the water freezes.  Then, take out your heels and let the ice thaw until you can slip out the bags.  Your heels should be much looser and comfier!Chelsea Crockett - Prom Heels
  • Speaking of making your heels more comfortable, using heat to stretch out the material is your best bet!  Take a blow dryer and blast your shoes with hot air, then bend and twist your shoes while they’re still warm to loosen them up!
  • One of the worst parts about wearing new shoes is the possibility of lots of blisters… Yikes!  As weird as this might sound, try rubbing deodorant on the places on your foot where you might blister.  This will provide a small barrier to prevent any rubbing!
  • When you get a new pair of heels, the bottoms of them will most likely be slippery.  Take sandpaper and rub the bottom of your shoes with it.  It’ll give them a little grip and friction!

Which DIY are you going to try out?  I hope it helps! 🙂

Whether it is your first or fourth time going to the prom, you most likely have questions about how the night and the events leading up to it should go down. In order to ease your troubled minds, I have come up with a list of frequently asked questions about prom and have answered them according to my findings on the subject!

  1. Once I am asked to prom, how long can I wait to let them know if it is a “yes” or “no”?
  • Ideally, you should let them know asap. If you aren’t sure of your answer right when they ask you, tell them, in the nicest way possible, that you will let them know soon.
  1. Does he pay for dinner? Do I? Do we split it?FullSizeRender (55)
  • If you are dating, he should pay. If you are going as friends, you should split it. If you are anything in between, assume you are splitting the check unless he offers to pay.
  1. Is renting a limo necessary? Who pays, if so?
  • Definitely not necessary! Driving to prom with your date can be a fun time for you two to get to know each other! If you DO end up renting a limo, it is usually with a group of friends, and you all pitch in.
  1. How do you know if/what kind of boutonniere to buy your date?
  • Ask him what color suit is, and ask him if he even wants one! It is totally okay for him not to want to wear one.
  1. Should I meet his parents, and should he meet mine?
  • I say yes, but it is whatever you feel comfortable with! Your parents may feel more comfortable sending you off to the dance if they have been introduced to who you are going with, and vice versa.
  1. What if the night isn’t going well?
  • If your date is a dud, if he is treating you badly, or if you are just having a bad time, try and hang with your friends. To avoid having to dance with your date if the night isn’t going well, grab your bff and dance with her or just go to the bathroom. Worse comes to worse, have your mom come get you.
  1. Can I dance with other people at the prom?
  • Up to you! If you are actually in a relationship with your date, you will need to clear it with him, but if you aren’t dating your date, I say yes! Slow dances are usually reserved for your date, but if a guy friend asks you to come dance the electric slide with him, I think that is totally cool! Of course, check with your date first.
  1. Will my date expect me to kiss him at the end of the night?
  • You kiss who you want to and when you want to, you don’t kiss because you feel you HAVE to! He shouldn’t expect anything. You choose who you kiss and when you kiss them! If you don’t feel like it is appropriate, then don’t! Simple as that.

I hope these helped answer any of your prom questions! If you have more, comment below!

Prom can be a difficult night to plan and prepare for. There are so many things you should have set even weeks or months in advance! Along with your plans, it’s a necessity to have your dress, jewelry, shoes, and everything else ready to go. Let me tell you, it can be stressful! I found and came up with some tips and hacks that will make prom flow much easier!

  • Oftentimes when I wear a pair of heels, my feet slide all over the place. Chelsea Crockett - Lipstick TipSpray your feet with hairspray, especially the heel, before putting on your shoes. This will prevent them from slipping all night long!
  • One of the most annoying things about makeup is how quickly it can fade or rub off. If you want your lipstick to last longer, add a thin layer of lipstick, then a layer of powder, followed by another thin layer of lipstick or gloss.
  • Carry a mini beauty kit in your clutch. Always have lip gloss, bobby pins, gum/mints, powder foundation, etc. Throw in whatever can fit and whatever you think could come in handy.
  • If an unexpected pimple pops up, there’s not much you can do to automatically get rid of it, but you’re not out of luck! Take an ice cube and apply it to the area for 30-45 seconds. It doesn’t get rid of it, but it reduces the redness around it and makes it less noticeable!

What prom hacks are you going to use this year? Let me know below so I can use them, too!

Find Your Most Flattering Prom Dress

It is April, so you know what that means…it’s time to choose a prom dress!!! It can be a huge task because there are so many options to choose from. Long or short? Sequins or no? Patterned or plain? Chiffon or satin? And what shape do you want your dress to be? Have no fear, Chelsea is here to give you tips on what prom dress fits your body type best to help you narrow down your choices and ensure that you feel like a princess on prom night.

  1. Petite: For my ladies under 5 foot 3 inches tall, floor length gowns and full skirts may overpower your shape! Showing a little bit of leg with a shorter dress or wearing an a-line gown can go a long way in flattering your figure. Opt for a fitted dress with a v-neckline, or pleated skirts that will elongate your frame. Also, delicate, feminine dresses and heels are a good compliment to your body!FullSizeRender (52)
  2. Pear: Pear shaped figures are when your hips are wider than your chest and your waist is well defined. For my pear-shaped ladies, your waist is your best asset, so work it girl! The goal is to add volume to your upper body and accentuate your small waist, taking attention away from your hips. A dress with a fitted open neck or strapless top and a A-line or full skirt is a good option!
  3. Hourglass: This is my curvy girls! Work it! Your bust and hips are even with each other and your upper body is balanced with the length of your legs. Your best dress will accentuate your well-defined waist, so a natural waistline, form fitted top, v-neck, open neck, accentuated waist, and wrap dresses will enhance your figure!
  4. Slender: For my slender ladies, the key is to accentuate your long and lean figure with a fitted gown. You can also draw attention to your shape with an empire waist, a belt, an a-symmetric neckline, or a dress with a slit!
  5. Apple: The apple figure is when you are wider around the middle, and have slim legs and a shorter waist. A dress with an empire waist or sequined/jeweled top draws the eye upward towards your face, and if you love your legs, show those puppies off!

I hope you find the dress of your dreams!

How to Avoid Prom Drama!

I love prom and school dances but oftentimes they come with stupid drama that can be so easily avoided! Situations get made into bigger deals than they actually are which can cause unneeded gossip and drama. I put together some tips on how you can avoid any prom drama this year so you can end the school year on a good note!

I know a couple schools around my area use social media to their advantage! A girl in the senior class usually creates a Facebook group for that prom year and adds anyone that is going into it! Then basically everyone keeps adding people they know that are going. The purpose Chelsea Crockett - Prom Articleis to post your dress once you finally purchase it. It lessens the amount of repeats and lessens the amount of drama when two girls have the same dress!

Once again, technology can save the day! If most of the people in your group have iPhones, make a prom group chat! Instead of one person coming up with picture and dinner plans, everyone can pitch in ideas and suggestions. You can even take a vote to make your schedule for the night! This way people can’t get mad about not getting a say in what their group’s plans are for the night.

Another tip is to plan ahead. Know who’s in your group, the time you’re meeting, where you’re going, etc. It’s never good to wait last minute. This will not only save you from unneeded drama, but will make your prom less stressful altogether!

Let me know how your prom night is :)! – Chelsea

5 Tips to Prepare for Prom

Since I’ve been to a couple proms, I understand how overwhelming and stressful it can be! Making sure everything is perfect can get exhausting, especially when things don’t always go your way. So… here are a few tips to help you stay on track for a successful night with friends!

  1. First and foremost… you have to find the perfect dress!  Along with your dress, you have to find the shoes that will compliment it. Jewelry comes next.  Look for that elegant pair of earrings or necklace you’ve been dying to buy. Make sure to find everything at least a month in advance. This will save you so much stress and give you enough time to put together your look.Chelsea Crockett - Prom Makeup
  2. Now it’s time to schedule some appointments!  With prom season….hair, makeup, and nail appointments fill up fast so be sure to call early.  After you schedule, go online and look for your favorite hairdo, makeup combo, and nail design. Be sure to take pictures with you so your specialist knows just what you’re looking for!
  3. If you have a large group going together, you’ll want to start up some group chats and look into renting a party bus or limousine to drive you around.  Someone in the group will need to make phone calls to get prices from these companies and see what your group can afford!
  4. You have your dress and tux colors so now it’s time to call your local florist and get your date his boutonnière.  You may want to drop some subtle hints to make sure he’s ordered your corsage :).
  5. Last, but not least, plan to get together with some of your friends on the date of the big day. Have your friends over for some appetizers while you all get ready together.  After all, prom will be one of your most memorable nights in all of high school!

Have fun! – Chelsea

I know it’s only the end of January but with spring approaching, we all have one thing on our minds…  What will my prom dress look like this year?  As girls, we love to dress up and have that extra special night with the perfect dress, shoes, hair, and makeup!  This year is no different.  You may think it’s too early to be thinking of prom dresses, but I think Chelsea Crockett - Two Piece Prom Dressthe earlier the better! The faster you get your dress, the less you have to worry about copying someone else or duplicating their dress.

What’s nice about this year is that almost any dress will fit the fashion scene.  If you like long and straight, glittery and full, or even a two piece dress, then you are in luck.  You’ll be ready for the red carpet look.  My suggestion would be to get online and find the style you’re looking for that best fits your body type and your inner fashion style.  Many of the dresses have open backs or high neck cuts.  If you want to be the princess of the ball, perhaps a gown with sheer sequins or tiny sparkles will give you that extra feminine look.

One of the looks I love for this year is a trendy two piece gown.  Many of them have sequins and cut outs to give just the look you are going for.  I still haven’t decided which dress is my exact favorite but I can sure spend endless hours looking at beautiful dresses online and in magazines.  It’s not too early to get started!

Happy shopping! – Chelsea
