Picture this: you lay down in bed after a long day, close your eyes, and toss and turn for the next three hours.  Sound familiar?  Anxiety can affect your mind and body, especially when you lay down at night and try to sleep!  We’ve all been there, but we don’t have to be!  Here are three night remedies to reduce anxiety.

  • If you know you get anxious late at night or before you go to sleep, purchase a lavender candle or lavender-scented room spray.  Light your candle 30 min before bed so your room is filled with a lavender aroma when you lay down to sleep!  Chelsea Crockett - Hot BathIf you forget to light your candle or don’t want to fall asleep with it burning, spray around your bed with lavender room spray.  The scent of lavender is proven to lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety!  Maybe even put a drop of lavender essential oil on your bed, pillow, or skin.
  • Take a hot bath!  Hot baths are already known for their relaxing aromas, but adding just a simple ingredient can make them 10x more calming.  What is it you ask?  Epsom salts!  These release an inorganic chemical called magnesium sulfate which has shown to lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety.  It truly calms you down!
  • Ever heard of chamomile tea?  Most people use it to make them sleep, but it works for anxiety just as well!  It supposedly releases chemicals that help you to relax.  There are many studies that have shown a dramatic decrease in anxiety for those who drink chamomile tea daily!

Which remedy works best for you?  Try them out and let me know!

Home Remedies for Killing Nasty Allergies

Spring fever is in full swing! With the flowers budding and the warm weather moving in, there’s also a negative side to the beautiful outdoors: allergies. You can’t stop them and they only seem to get worse throughout each month. Besides the obvious medicines and vitamins, there are things at home you can do to lessen your symptoms!

Hot showers are the one of the best ways to clear up your stuffy nose. Because of the steam, it hydrates your sinuses and eliminates dryness. If you don’t want to fully take a shower to get the steam effect, pour boiling water in a bowl, put your head over the top of it, and inhale. This works just as well! (If you want to go the extra mile, buy a humidifier and put it in your room while you sleep!)

Chelsea Crockett - Peppermint TeaPeppermint is an easy and enjoyable way to clear up your stuffy nose. If you’re a tea drinker, add some dry or chopped fresh peppermint to a cup of warm tea. The warmth of your tea will help your throat and the peppermint will work at opening your sinuses. Another bonus to add to your mint tea, is a little bit of honey. Legend says that, because bees transfer pollen to honey, eating or drinking a little bit every day can slowly make you immune to its effects! It’s worth a try!

If you’re a victim of nasty allergies, share your remedy secrets below!

Girls can all agree on one thing… shaving. It’s a pain and we don’t want to do it! Besides the time it takes every couple of days, potential cuts and burns are bad enough. There are not only ways to prevent these burns but ways to soothe them as well. Here are a few to help you out!Chelsea Crockett - Honey

  • One of the most common ways to soothe your burns is with cold compresses like an ice pack. This will tone down the inflammation and help cool off your burn.
  • Aloe Vera not only helps sunburns but razor burns as well! It might not be the first thing you think of when you step out of the shower, but it’s soothing and promotes healing!
  • Have you ever considered honey? Applying some honey to your burn actually helps bring down swelling and alleviate any pain. Who knew :)?
  • Old fashion remedies are often the best! So… try out the traditional baking soda trick. It’ll help bring down any redness on your skin. (Also, if you burn starts to itch, you can mix together some baking soda and water then apply it to your skin with a cotton ball or washcloth!)
  • Cucumber! Ever wonder why you put this on your eyes during a facial? It rejuvenates skin and helps moisturize it! Rub a few slices of cucumber on your burn and feel its magic.

Although these are a few of my favorite remedies, you probably have a few of your own! Share your secrets down below :)!

Don’t get me wrong, summer is the best time of the year, but some of us teens get into the routine of staying up late at night… or even into the early hours of the morning! It may not affect us when we’re out of school and sleeping in through lunch, but during the school year it hits us like a ton of bricks! If you’re one of those people stuck in the exhausting routine, here are a few tips on breaking the habit!

  • Try drinking a glass of Sleepy Time tea. For some people, this tea is a miracle worker! If you start drinking a cup an hour or so before you hit the hay, you’ll feel calm and will hopefully doze off right away.Chelsea Crockett - Sleepytime Tea
  • Put your phone far away from you or in a different room. This may be the last thing you want to do, but I promise it works! 90% of the time you’re up after midnight is because your phone has too many easy distractions.
  • Use lavender! Lavender’s scent is known for relaxing and relieving stress. Purchase a lavender scented candle and let it burn for a while before you go to bed. Let it fill your room while it releases your stress, too!
  • Simply relax! Oftentimes you may find yourself getting frustrated and giving up on falling asleep early. DON’T! If you lay in bed and focus your mind on other things, it’ll help make you sleepy and you’ll eventually doze off.

So next time you’re having trouble catching some ZZZ’s, try out a couple of these steps and you’ll hopefully make it through the day without sleeping through class :)!

Natural Allergy Remedies

Allergies are back at it and there is no way of stopping them.  When they hit you, they hit you.  You know when you wake up with a sore throat and a stuffy nose that you are going to need to stock up on some Advil and Benadryl!  Here are a few remedies to help out with your scratchy throat and stuffed up nose.

  • Take a glass of warm water and add about a teaspoon of salt to it. Stir it up and gurgle it in the back of your throat from about 10 seconds. Repeat as many times as you want! I suggest up to four or five times throughout the night.
  • Did you know lemons and limes can actually play a part in healing your throat? We all know that warm tea can soothe an itchy throat, but adding a few drops of lime or lemon juice helps a ton also! (P.S. Don’t be shy on adding a teaspoon of honey to your cup of tea either. It works just as well!)Chelsea Crockett - Citrus Tea
  • For the dare devils out there, eat wasabi! Wasabi is a Japanese condiment that is extremely hot! How does it help? It completely cleans out your sinuses and puts your tear ducts into action. One of the only tolerable ways to ingest this is to add it to your favorite sushi. Good luck!
  • Lastly, take a hot shower. The steam helps your stuffed up nose a tremendous amount. Since the drainage in your nose is often the cause of a scratchy throat, the steam will help both your nose and throat.

Fight back your allergies this season!  I hope this gives you a few ideas on how to do just that.
