Flat abs are something that I think we all strive for. I mean, who doesn’t want a rock solid tummy?! Working out is only a small contributor to abs, believe it or not. As my PE teacher would say, “Abs are made in the kitchen!” And it is true! The food you eat has a huge impact on your body and your weight loss. Here are a few foods that help you in your journey to flat abs.

  1. Eggs: They are the perfect protein source! They have a great balance of essential amino acids that help build muscle, plus if you eat one for breakfast, you are less hungry as the day goes on! Less hungry = less snacking = less calories consumed!
  2. Apples: Apples are 85% water, which helps you feel full, and have 5 grams of fiber! This makes them an awesome Capture10midnight/midday snack! Plus, apples help promote healthy lungs and prevent some cancers, so an apple a day DOES keep the doctor away.
  3. Leafy greens: Leafy greens are things like kale, spinach, and broccoli! They are a great source of calcium which helps fuel your workouts, and help prevent cancer! Plus, they make great salads. 😉

Munch away!

During the summer months I am always on the go, which means I eat things that are easy to make and quick go grab. saladUnfortunately, usually foods that are quick and easy are ones that aren’t very good for you, such as fast food. One way to stay healthy on the go is to have a salad in a jar ready to go! Here is how to build your perfect on the go snack- salad in a jar!

For the first layer of your salad, you want to put the dresing. Then, as the second layer, you want to layer your protein and hearty toppings, like beans, carrots, bell peppers, or chickpeas. The next layer is your lighter toppings, like quinoa, seeds, tomatoes, nuts, or strawberries. The last layer is your leafy portion, so that is your lettuce, spinach, or mixed greens. The perfect salad contains all of those layers, and your handy dandy salad in the jar is the ultamate “fast food.”

Keep a couple jars in your fridge ready to go at all times so instead of driving through Mickey D’s when you are in a pinch, you can just grab a salad from the fridge and go!

We all know that spinach is one of the healthiest foods out there!  This leafy green is important for the health of our hair, skin, and bones; and provides our body with a handful of vitamins and minerals.  Unfortunately not everyone likes spinach, but since it is mild in taste, adding it to some of your favorite dishes is an easy way to sneak it in.  If you use it in the right ways, you won’t even know you’re eating it!

  • When making a smoothie, add a handful of spinach leaves to your blender.  Although your smoothie will come out green, you won’t even be able to taste the spinach!
  • Love deli wraps or Mexican burritos?  Try making them with a spinach wrap instead of a flour tortilla.
  • Tear up spinach leaves and add them to your normal house salad.  This way, you will notice the crunchiness of the lettuce, not the spinach.
  • If you’re going out to eat and always order the cheese queso for an appetizer, try spinach and artichoke dip instead.  Although it is not particularly healthy, it still has a few health benefits despite all the creamy cheese.
  • Finely dice up spinach and add it to your next omelet or pasta dish.  The sauces and extra toppings will cover up the spinach taste.  Also, if you dice the spinach up enough, you won’t even notice when you’re eating it and when you’re not.

It’s important for your body to get the nutrients it needs!  Try incorporating spinach into your daily diet whenever you can!
