You may think that sun protection is as simple as putting on sunscreen and BAM, you are protected. There are a lot of sunscreen myths out there, and I am about to clear them up for you so that you can be sure you are doing what you need to keep your skin safe this summer.Products_Banana_Boat_Sport_Performance_Sunscreen

Myth #1: You only need sunscreen when it is sunny out. Even when it is a cloudy day, that doesn’t mean you are being shielded from the sun’s rays! UV light comes through the clouds and rain, so don’t skimp on lathering on the SPF!

Myth #2: SPF 100 sunscreen blocks everything. Just because it says SPF 100 doesn’t mean it blocks 100% of the sun’s rays! SPF is the number that reflects the amount of time you can stay in the sun, so it is recommended that you reapply every 2 hours.

Myth #3: If you have a tan, don’t worry about burns. Not true! Tans are a sign that your skin has been damaged by the sun, so it is vital that you reapply sunscreen often.

Now that you know some truths about sunscreen, you can protect your skin the right way this summer.

Pinterest DIY face treatments can sometimes be deceiving. The can do more harm than good if you aren’t too careful! If you want to avoid unnecessary irritation and breakouts on your face, check out the tips below on what to never put on your face.

  1. Hairspray: A lot of people spritz their face with hairspray to help their makeup stay on longer, but hairspray contains alcohols which suck the moisture right out of your face! It fan also clog your pores and cause acne flair ups. Yuck!sugar-03
  2. Lemon juice: Citrus fruits have a ton of acid so they easily irritate your skin. Also, lemons have a chemical in them that can make your skin very sensitive to light, which means if you put lemon juice on your face and then go outside for a long period of time, your skin could blister.
  3. Really hot water: Steam facials are great for you, but washing your face with hot water is another story. The thought is that hot water kills bacteria, but it actually strips the moisture out of your skin! Use warm water instead.
  4. Sugar: Although it is known as a good skin exfoliant, save it for skin other than facial skin. The big particles can cause microscopic tears in your skin and can lead to breakouts!

Keeping your face healthy and clean is just as much about what you put on it as what you don’t put on it!

If there is one thing I wish I could get more of, it is sleep. When I am at school, all I can think about is going home and napping, ha! Staying up late sounds good at the time, but the next day is sooooo not as fun. Makeup can hide the bags under your eyes, but it cant disguise your exhaustion! Here are 3 reasons why you should be getting more sleep, for your skin’s sake.

  1. Sped up aging process: When you don’t get enough sleep, your skin suffers. It speeds up the aging process of your skin and makes it dry out faster.images
  2. Increased Cortisol levels: cortisol is a stress hormone, and when you don’t catch enough zzzz’s, it gets all out of whack. Cortisol can also cause acne and trigger some skin conditions like eczema, or it can make your pimples worse!
  3. It changes your growth hormones: sleep deprivation also causes decreases in growth hormones that help thicken and moisturize your skin. This leads to dehydrated skin and, like we said above, faster signs of aging! Want glowing skin? Then you need those growth hormones!

Moral of the story? Sleep keeps your skin looking better and younger. Getting your beauty rest is so worth it!

Today’s diy face wash is all natural and gives you all the benefits of a store bought exfoliant without the harsh chemicals. Blackheads are the worst. They are persistent little buggers, because no matter how much we poke pinch and squeeze at them, they never seem to disappear. As it turns out, there are a few things that you may not know about these little devils that could help you treat them and prevent them from showing their ugly little faces:

  1. What blackheads actually are: Blackheads are open comedomes that are really just widened hair follicles that are filled with bacteria, skin debris, and sebum oil. Ew.34772427
  2. What is causing them?: Blackheads are generally caused by the overproduction of oil, so all of my oily skinned Insider should gear towards oil-free makeup and lotions to be on the safe side.
  3. What is a DIY blackhead treatment? There are plenty of cheap blackhead busting DIYs out there, and I have written about a few! Here is a quick one: mix some baking soda with apple cider vinegar to create a paste and gently scrub the blackheads away.
  4. Don’t wash your face too much: Sounds a little weird, right? Washing your face is great, but try not to go overboard. Cleanse your face once or twice a week, but no more than that because your face can dry out and become irritated.

So, did you learn any more about those pesky black heads? Hopefully you can use this info to help prevent and treat your blackheads!

Summer can really do a number on your skin. It can dry it out, clog up your pores, burn it, all that good stuff! Here are some summer skin tips to keep your hide nice and safe.

  1. Find the right sunscreen for your skin type. This is super important because if you have oily skin, you need to get a sunscreen that is really light and won’t clog your pores! Read the labels good and well before purchasing sunscreen.chelsea crockett sunscreen
  2. Exfoliate more often. Dry skin is the enemy, and chlorine pools and sun can bring out your skin’s bad side! Make sure you exfoliate at least a few times a week to rid your body of all the dead skin that may be building up.
  3. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before, and use cold yogurt on sunburns. Apply the sunscreen 30 minutes in advance to give it time to soak into your skin. You don’t want to sweat it off or wash off in the pool because you can get a nasty sunburn if your skin isn’t protected! Also, if you do end up looking like a lobster at the end of the day, use cold yogurt on your skin to sooth the burn and heal it.

Go soak up the sun, and protect your skin this summer!
