Summer is the prime time for your skin to be extra vulnerable to acne and breakouts.  Using certain sunscreens, getting sweaty faces from the heat, and late nights prior to crawling into bed without washing your face are just a few examples.  There are certain ways to prevent summer breakouts, and I have the scoop!

I know during the warm weather my skin gets extra oily and there’s no stopping it!  This is one of the main causes to zits and acne.  There is one way to slow down your oil glands and that’s by avoiding alcohol based skin products.  These dry out your pores, tricking them into the urge to balance your skin’s moisture. Therefore, they over produce oil and make your face greasy and gross!  Yuck!

Sunscreen is basically the answer to everything during the summer! Chelsea Crockett - Clinique SunscreenMake sure you always, always, always wear sunscreen when you’re out in the sun for a long amount of time.  No sunscreen equals sunburns, and sunburns equal dried out skin.  And what happens to dry skin?  Your oil glands will think they need to moisturize your skin, therefore causing oily skin.  I suggest using a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 30 in it.  You’re basically killing two birds with one stone :)!

Lastly, and most importantly, wash your face twice a day!  Especially if you sweat a lot during your days in the sun.  Sweat mixes with bacteria and dirt on your skin to create a ugly combination.  Gross!  Let me know what tricks you use for preventing summer breakouts in the comments below!

Who doesn’t love a trip to the beach?!  It’s the perfect place to unwind, get a tan, and have some fun!  Many don’t know this, but going to the beach has a handful of health and beauty benefits.  Check out how a trip to the beach can make your body happy and make you feel even more beautiful!

Taking a few days vacation from your busy schedule is extremely important. Sometimes, we try to accomplish too much and let ourselves get overly stressed.  This can lead to lack of sleep, weight gain, and mood changes.  Our brain and bodies need time to relax!  Sunlight is even proven to decrease depression!  As to our physical appearance, the beach is our best friend.  The sun is a natural source of vitamin D, which leads to healthy skin.  The salt in the ocean can also help clear up acne. (HINT: go all natural at the beach. NO makeup!)  You can even accomplish the perfect beach-wave hair!  If you haven’t gotten a pedicure in awhile or have seriously dry feet, heading to the beach can cure the problem!  Sand naturally exfoliates dead sin off your feet, leaving them smooth and soft!

I think it’s time we all pack up and head to the beach.  Who’s with me?!

Love,

Chelsea

Our skin and overall complexion changes drastically from winter to summer. From pale to tan, no freckles to a face full of freckles, and a bad complexion to a good complexion…this change calls for a full “makeup makeover”! So how exactly do you go about switching over your makeup? What do you keep and what do you set aside for a few months? I’ve got you covered!Chelsea Crockett- bright lipstick

In the winter it’s all about faking the tan with bronzer and rocking a dark or nude lip. This is not the case for the summer! Since your skin will already be tan, ditch the foundation (except for covering up blemishes) and bronzer and stick with an icy pink blush. It’s great to contrast the dark and light colors. Don’t try to make yourself tanner by adding bronzer to your already bronzed face. It’s also time to swap your maroon lipstick for hot pinks and orange! These colors will make you look tanner and can actually act as an accessory to a plain colored dress or outfit. It’s also important to realize that less IS more! Ditch the dark eyeshadow and heavy eyeliner and go all-natural! All you really need is a good icy blush, mascara, and some fun lipstick to give yourself the perfect summer makeover. HAPPY SUMMER INSIDERS!

Chelsea

Dear girls who have naturally clear skin: be so so SO grateful for that!! Girls like me who have to work to have clear skin would kill to have your gorgeous “I woke up like this” façade. According to experts, there are a few “rules” that you need to follow in order to get fabulously flawless skin. Here are those very rules so you know NOT to break them!20131109_Chelsea-0063-XL

  1. SPF all the way: Wear a minimum of SPF 15 on a daily basis. This will help prevent skin damage, wrinkles, sunburn, and skin cancer.
  2. Work it out: Exercise isn’t always the most fun activity on the planet, but when you get that heart pumping you are delivering oxygen to your skin! Plus, you are burning calories and toning that fab figure.
  3. Say no to cigarettes: Not only is smoking terrible for your health in general, it is also horrible for your skin. Smoking causes your lung capacity to decrease, which causes decreased oxygenation of your tissues and gives your liver too much work to do to process the toxins. This makes your skin to dehydrate, cease to glow, and become inflamed.
  4. Don’t pick at zits: If you pop your pimples, you can cause them to scar! The best way to zap a zit is to put an ice cube wrapped in a cloth on your pimple for a minute.
  5. Exfoliate: This can help get rid of acne scars and also allows skin products to absorb better and work more effectively!

These are just a few things experts say will help you get gorgeous skin. Seems easy enough, right?

I struggle with oily skin, like a lot of girls my age. I have learned a lot of natural ways to combat my oily skin, and using salt as a facial toner is just one of them! Salt exfoliates, cleanses, and tones your skin while giving it a softer, blemish-free look! Here is how I use salt in my skin beauty regimen.

Salt toner:

  1. Mix 1 tsp of sea salt and 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar with 2 cups of waterSea salt
  2. Pour the mixture into a container so that you can store it.
  3. This is how you use the toner: wash your face like you normally would, and then use a cotton ball to apply the salt toner all over your skin. After you have applied it, wash it off with cold water. You can also fill a small spray bottle with it and spray your face instead of using a cotton ball.

How does this toner work exactly? I’m glad you asked. The apple cider vinegar and sea salt both have properties that will prevent & reduce acne and blackheads as well as keep your skin clear. These ingredients are cheap and all natural so you can feel good about what you are putting on your skin!

Happy cleansing!

10 Beauty Mistakes You Didn’t Know You Were Making

Do you ever crawl into bed after a long day and accidentally fall asleep with your makeup on? Or maybe you always “forget” to wash your makeup brushes. Sound familiar? These are only a couple of the many beauty crimes you might be committing! I’m here to let you know what beauty mistakes you should put an end to ASAP!

  1. Sleeping in your makeup. Foundation residue and layers of eye shadow are doing more than you think when you sleep. They clog your pores and encourage breakouts!
  2. Wearing waterproof mascara every day. Doing this results in dried-out lashes. Also, when scrubbing it off at the end of the day, you’re likely to lose more lashes.
  3. Ignoring a topcoat. If you want your polish to last, don’t neglect this.
  4. Applying nail polish over your cuticles. Your polish won’t stay on for long. Avoid this!
  5. Forgetting to wash your makeup brushes. Keep them clean to keep away any bacteria you might be adding to your skin. Yuck!
  6. Applying makeup in the wrong lighting. You don’t want to look orange or like a ghost!Chelsea Crockett - Matching Foundation
  7. Reapplying makeup continuously throughout your day. Caking on makeup is never a good idea. Although it may seem like there’s none left, wash your face before adding another layer!
  8. Matching your foundation shade to the back of your hand. This often tricks you by thinking you found the perfect shade.
  9. Washing your hair every day. Having hydrated locks is good, so don’t dry them out by doing this.
  10. Forgetting to apply facial sunscreen. Sunburns to your face are often the most damaging to your pores. Avoid it before it happens!

And the list goes on and on! Put a stop to your beauty crimes before they do even more damage!

Surprisingly enough, some of your daily beauty habits aren’t making you more beautiful.  They could actually be dangerous!  Too many beauty products are abused, causing them to do harm instead of actually help.  Look below to see if you’re doing any of these dangerous beauty habits! Chelsea Crockett- over-exfoliating

  • Every girl wants bronzed, summer skin, but hitting the tanning bed can be detrimental to the health of your skin. Every time you tan you are killing healthy skin cells and increasing your chance of getting skin cancer. No tan is worth that!
  • Exfoliating is a great way to unclog pores and remove dead skin cells, but over-exfoliating or using a tough exfoliator can tear the skin and cause it to become more sensitive to products in the future.
  • Picking at zits is a deadly act. Once popped, peeling away at the dead skin will only cause the skin to take longer to heal or worse, scarring. Instead, leave it alone. It may look ugly, but the blemish will go away in no time.
  • Touching your face seems like a harmless task, but it’s actually a crime to your skin. Every time your hand touches your skin, you’re transferring whatever dirt or oil your hands have accumulated that day onto your face…clogging your pores.
  • If you use a lot of hair products, rinsing it out properly when you shower is important. Just washing it and quickly rinsing it is alright, but eventually the excess product will build up. Rinse your hair longer than you think you should.
  • Never sleep with your makeup on! When you get your beauty rest, your pores will clog leaving you an unpleasant surprise in the morning.

Taking care of your skin and body properly is so important for a healthy complexion!  Keep these in mind and you’re on your way to the best skin and hair you’ve ever had.

XOXO,

Chelsea

Importance of Winter Weather SPF

We all know that wearing sunscreen during the summer time is a no-brainer. But wait, did you know that it is just as important to wear SPF in the winter?…

We all know that wearing sunscreen during the summer time is a no-brainer. But wait, did you know that it is just as important to wear SPF in the winter? It doesn’t matter if you are inside all day at school or work, you still need to protect your skin!images

UV rays are everywhere even in winter! The rays penetrate the windows of your car, of your school, even your house! They are especially harmful in the snowy weather because the sunlight reflects off the snow and strengthens the rays. The sun can even harm you on cloudy days! The sun causes your skin to age and can cause spider veins and loss of fullness in your lips. Hands show aging the most, so watch out when you have your hands on a sunny steering wheel! Your neck is quick to show the signs of aging as well, so watch out! Sun damage adds up quickly, so every little bit you can prevent helps!

One easy way to get your SPF in is to use a moisturizer with sunscreen in it.

Girls with sensitive skin know the ultimate struggle. Finding products that won’t break your skin out can sometimes seem near impossible! All natural or organic products are the best, and sometimes the only, way to go for those with sensitive skin. Here are some pluses and positives to all natural products!

  • Sensitivity. The main reason, which already stated, is that organic ingredients in these products will help avoid irritation. Less breakouts, reduced redness, smoother skin… sign me up!
  • Earth-friendly. The ingredients in all natural products are manufactured organically, making them healthier for your skin and the planet! They reduce the amount of chemicals in your face products that would normally go down the drain or in the air.Chelsea Crockett - Organic Makeup
  • External and Internal. Organic products not only help to clear up your breakouts or reduce blemishes, but also do wonders under your skin. I read online that they increase collagen production, which is the protein that keeps your skin’s firmness and elasticity. So while your face is clearing up, your skin will be thanking you as well!
  • Compatibility. Natural products adapt better to your skin and are safer to use. Surprisingly, the skin is the largest organ of the body. It’s healthiest to use products that match well with your skin, steering clear of any negative side effects!
  • Chemical-free. With organic products, you don’t have to worry about any nasty chemicals being applied to your body. Most are naturally manufactured without any use of chemicals or toxins.

What types of natural products to you use? Let me know below and I might just try them out myself :)!

Your body is full of nutrients and minerals you didn’t even know you had. Of course, there are always ways to enhance what good nutrients go into your skin and body! There are many oils you can use to make your skin not only feel good but look good too. Here are my top three that you can use to benefit from as well!

  • Coconut Oil. Legend has it that Caribbean women have been swearing by coconut oil for decades, and scientists can understand why! By applying it to your skin, it helps moisturize any dry or dehydrated skin. Coconut oil also works magic on your lips. Look for products that say they’re infused with it!Chelsea Crockett - Argan Oil
  • Argan Oil. Before I did my research, I thought these oils were only for strengthening and repairing hair. Surprisingly, it works as a natural hydrator for your face and body. It softens skin and can even reduce acne scars. It’s extremely rich in Vitamin E, so the nutrients and benefits from this oil are endless.
  • Jojoba Oil. Before coming across this online, I didn’t even know it existed. Jojoba oil works in many different areas of your body. It can help skin, hair, lips, etc. Whatever you choose to apply it to! All you have to do is look for products infused with it. It’s a perfect substitution for lotion after showering or before going to sleep. Your skin will thank you!

Which oil is your favorite? Let me know below so I can try it out for myself!

The Truth about Sleeping in Makeup

High school’s full of several nights of coming home late from a friend’s house and falling asleep as soon as you make it to your bed. Other times, long hours of homework may keep you up a little past your bedtime, causing you to fall asleep with a book under your head… and without washing your face! Either situation sound familiar? Sleeping with your makeup on is a major “don’t.” Here are a few reasons why:

  • Foundation can clog pores and produce bacterial infections. It can also be one of the main causes of acne and breakouts.Chelsea Crockett - Aging Skin Something in your skin called collagen keeps your skin firm and looking good. Skipping a wash leads to the breakdown of collagen, which makes your skin age faster.
  • Have your ever left your mascara on and woken up with unbelievable irritation in your eyes? Leaving on mascara or eyeliner can cause your eyes to hurt from little bits of the makeup falling into them. (P.S. Your mascara will slowly fall off pulling your eyelashes with it!)
  • Believe it or not, eye shadow plays a big part in clogging oil glands. If you let it build up too long it can create sties in your eyes! Ouch!
  • Leaving foundation or concealer or your skin overnight causes it to become sensitive and dry. I cannot overemphasize how bad it is for your pores!
  • Like I said before, your skin also ages faster. Not only does your skin eventually dry out, but, over time, wrinkles will start to be enhanced. No one wants that!

So next time you come in late from a football game or a long night studying at a friend’s house, take a quick 5 minutes to wash your face (or even keep some makeup wipes by the side of your bed!). Every night matters :)!

Chelsea Crockett - Kim Kardashian ContourContouring is hard to do… I’m still trying to master the skill myself! Some of the most famous celebrities such as the Kardashians, Jennifer Lopez, and Mila Kunis are all great examples of the perfect contoured face. Here are a few simple steps to start you off:

First, you’ll need to grab a few products: concealer, foundation that is right for your skin tone, blush, bronzer, and highlighter (or just purchase a contour palette!). Start by applying your concealer under your eyes and on any blemishes you want to cover up. Then, apply your regular foundation where you normally do. Take your highlighter and apply it to your T-zone, especially your upper cheek bones. Take your bronzer and cover the hollows of your cheek bones, the sides of your nose bones, and the top of your forehead. Blend it in with a blending brush and pick up your blush. Apply your blush normally to your cheeks and take a look in the mirror! Your perfect contoured face is complete! The big key you can’t miss is to make sure you lighten the areas of your face where you need to. If you need to use a lighter shade of foundation on the upper parts of your cheek bones, DO!

Ahhhhh… cold weather is back again and is one of the number one causes of dry skin! Us girls need to be expecting what’s to come… cracking, breaking, and flaking are all struggles that will soon follow! There’s only one thing we can do: moisturize moisturize moisturize!

  • First off, test which moisturizer/lotion works best for your skin. If you have sensitive skin, make sure you’re careful with choosing the right product before using it religiously. Breakouts usually don’t show up right away, so be cautious!
  • Make sure to remember to moisturize 1-2 times a day (definitely twice if your skin is super dry). When you wake up, moisturize! Before you go to sleep, moisturize! Try to do it about 20-30 minutes before you go to sleep. This allows it to sink in and prevents it from rubbing off on your pillow.Chelsea Crockett - Face Moisturizers
  • Pay attention to your skin type. If your skin becomes oily easily, try a gel moisturizer. This will prevent you from getting the sweaty look that none of us want.
  • SPF is important! Just because it’s not summer anymore doesn’t mean you can’t get sunburnt. Always protect your skin from the sun! Sunburns cause breakage in your skin which dries out your pores.
  • A couple things you can do on top of moisturizing is to 1) buy a facial mask or 2) make your own DIY mask. Doing a DIY could be fun with your friends or siblings!

Do you have any tips of your own? Let me know below :)!

“Sleep considered to be sufficient to keep one looking young and beautiful.” This is the real definition of what us girls call beauty sleep. Whether sleep really helps us stay looking awake and youthful, there is some evidence behind the truth of it. So… beauty sleep: real or fake?

You all know the feeling of staying up way too late for a big test the next morning. Then, the minute you wake up and look in the mirror, the bagsChelsea Crockett - Dark Circles under your eyes show everyone else just how much sleep you actually got. Dark circles are one of the first indicators of lack of sleep. And let’s face it, we all hate dark circles and would do anything to get rid of them. Sleep really does help and is one of the only ways to fully reduce those awful circles!

Sleep benefits more than just tired eyes. Your skin actually replenishes and repairs itself faster while you sleep. A lack of sleep can slow or disrupt this process. As teenagers, we’re supposed to get a recommended 8 hours of sleep. Without enough of it, our skin ages faster. Along with that, your skin actually loses its radiance. It’s proven that little sleep can make your skin look duller.

Beauty sleep is REAL! A continued lack of sleep can actually make a difference. So ladies, buy a planner or make a schedule to make sure you get your hours in! You won’t only feel different but look different too!

Keep Your Skin From Cracking This Season

I hope you are all having a lovely fall as we start transitioning into the cold and windy days.  Ice cold temperatures and fierce winds can really take a toll on your skin, especially if your skin is extremely delicate.  Cracking and red patches are very common in the winter months and can leave your makeup looking drab.  The results of this weather change can also leave you looking more tired, for moisturized skin creates the illusion of being energized.   Follow a few of these simple steps to keep your skin looking radiant despite the harsh winter weather.

Try a moisturizer without an alcohol base.  Many drugstore moisturizers have alcohol as an ingredient.  Although lotions are supposed to moisturize, alcohol actually creates the opposite effect.  Try using an all-natural moisturizer made with natural oils such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, and hemp seed oil.  These natural oils can create a thick exterior, shielding your skin from the harshest of winds.  Another way to keep your skin feeling its very best is to wear minimal makeup.  You mustBeautyliciousinsider- Coconut Oil always allow your skin to breathe!  Over applying makeup to those stubborn red patches from the wind can only make it worse…plus, it doesn’t look very good!  Try only wearing cover up foundation and leaving dry patches makeup free.  It’s important that the pores soak up any moisture try can and allow oxygen in.  The last way to have moisturized skin is the simplest.  Drink LOTS of water.  Your skin is made up of about 10-20% of water.  When you are dehydrated, so is your skin.  Keep your skin happy and crack free by drinking a fair amount of water each day.

Don’t worry if your skin becomes difficult for the next couple of months.  It’s normal!  Make sure to be kind to your skin and give it the proper treatment it deserves.  Moisturized skin makes for a happy face!

Healthy Beauty Habits Every Girl Should Develop

Are you choosing an apple over a cookie day after day? Or maybe you set your mind to getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night no matter what? These are both beauty habits that are beneficial to your health, skin, hair, teeth, etc. Here are a few more that most likely aren’t in your daily routine but definitely should be!

  • Cleanse before you go to bed. This prevents buildup of dirt or other bacteria on your skin. It also helps your pores from getting clogged or breaking out!Chelsea Crockett - Cleaning Brushes
  • Clean your makeup tools and brushes. This helps clean off any of the bacteria that may be growing on them. Especially after you share your tools/brushes with someone else, washing them is not too bad of an idea.  Simply wash them gently with shampoo like the girl on the right.
  • Hopefully drinking lots of water is already in your daily routine (If not, it should be! Water solves everything from acne to teeth whitening!). If you ever put lemon in your water, you’re actually doing a lot more than you realize! Lemons have a bountiful amount of vitamins and nutrients. Your skin will thank you!
  • Focus on the good. You’ve heard this a million times: stop stressing! Stress can be the reason behind acne and breakouts. It’s 100x healthier to just sit back and relax.

What beauty habits do you practice daily? What’s your secret? Let me know below :)!
