When you hear the words “healthy lifestyle” what do you think of? Do you think of things like not-so-yummy-but-super-nutritious food, hours in the gym, and depriving yourself of things that aren’t so good for you but are sooooo good? That is the case a lot of times, and it shouldn’t be! Living a healthy lifestyle should be something that comes easy to all of us, not something we dread. There are really easy ways to live a healthy life that don’t involve juice cleanses or 10 mile daily jogs. In fact, diets and strict workout regimens are what drive us away from our fitness goals and discourage us! When our goals are hard to attain, we don’t want to stick to them. Realistic, sustainable goals are the way to go. Here are 3 easy health hacks to improve your health and start you on the path to a healthy lifestyle.

  1. Add coconut oil to your morning drink: Do you drink a smoothie or a cup of coffee to start your day? If so, add a tablespoon of coconut oil to it. This helps stabilize your blood sugar all day long so you don’t crave sugar, and it tastes great!96070-organic-virgin-coconut-oil
  2. Eat for 20 minutes: Make sure your meals last for at least 20 minutes each, even if it is just a small meal. It takes about 20 minutes for your body to register that you are full, so it will help you eat less and take smaller portions.
  3. Stand up and stretch: If you sit at school all day or sit at work, every hour or so it is important to stand up. It gets your muscles fired up! You also need to make it a point to stretch at your desk to keep your blood flowing and circulating. This doesn’t have to be a big, distracting stretch, just something as simple as twisting around in your desk or stretching your arms out in front of you!

See? Healthy habits don’t have to be extreme or something to dread. Just incorporate simple habits into your everyday life and it will make a difference in how you feel!

4 Ways You Could Be Dooming Your Metabolism

I often hear people say “Man, I wish I had a better metabolism and could eat anything I wanted.” It is true, a fast metabolism is something that a lot of us wish for. Luckily, it can be achieved! There are a lot of things you do every day unknowingly that are driving your metabolism down, so it is important to drop these habits if you want to improve your metabolism.

  1. Sitting all day: When you sit all day it causes your body to turn off at the metabolic level as your circulation slows. Your fat burning enzymes turn off and your blood sugar is used less. Try getting up and walking ever hour or so to wake your circulation up. I know this can be hard, being in school all day, but walking to class can help wake that circulation up.a972dcb2-100c-4343-8513-153879ad6b69_2048x2048
  2. Not getting enough snooze time: Not getting enough sleep can cause our metabolism to slow down to conserve energy. Sleep deprivation also increases our cortisol levels, which lowers the hormones that are used to metabolize nutrients.
  3. Drinking too little H2O: Water isn’t the most fun drink to guzzle (I mean, Dr. Pepper tastes pretty much 10x better), but it is the best thing for you. It can speed your metabolism up almost 30% after you drink some down!
  4. Eating at bad times: Your body has a natural rhythm that goes with your sleep and wake cycle, and it has a hard time digesting food at night. People who eat later at night burn less calories than those who eat earlier in the evening, studies prove it! Also, eating light meals during the day and then a big meal at night is not smart.

Staying away from these metabolism-slowing habits helps you kick your calorie-burning power into gear, but you still need to eat healthy and exercise to be as healthy as you can be.

Sleeping makes up a large part of our day. Teenagers are supposed to get a recommended 7-9 hours of sleep a night… That’s a long time if you think about it so why waste it? Acne can be improved over night using certain ingredients and products. Make use of your time and treat your skin while you sleep using these simple tips :)!Chelsea Crockett - Spot Treatment

  • Spot treatments are good for drying up breakouts and acne overnight. Apply it carefully so the rest of your skin stays moisturized and hydrated! You can find these for a cheaper price at most local drugstores like the Neutrogena one on the right. I promise you these are worth it!
  • Instead of actually buying a spot treatment, use aloe vera to calm down your skin! The reason your skin is breaking out is because it’s swelling and becoming inflamed. Aloe vera soothes your skin and reduces redness. Apply it on your acne before you go to sleep and let it work its magic!
  • Of course, we’ve all heard of the toothpaste trick. Apply a white toothpaste (not a gel) to your acne or pimple to dry it out while you sleep.
  • Eggs aren’t just for eating. You can use egg whites by whisking them and applying the ingredient to your irritated area. You can even use them for reducing acne scarring! It’s a two in one solution!

I hope this helps you out! – Chelsea

3 Weird Things That Happen In Your Sleep

How crazy is it that we spend a third of our lives asleep. Think of all that time we could be spending watching Netflix, but instead we have to sleep (totally kidding btw)! A lot of odd things happen in our sleep, and I’m not just talking about those dreams where we wake up naked in front of our whole class. Here are a few of the most common odd occurrences that happen while you are catching ZZzzz’s.

  1. Paralysis: When you are sleeping, your muscles are temporarily paralyzed so you won’t kick and punch while you dream. Have you ever wondered why, after a dream where you were running like a mad woman, you haven’t actually moved a muscle? This is why.Sleep-Walking-Girl
  2. Feeling like you are falling: We alllllll know this feeling. You are sleeping and then all of a sudden you jerk awake because you feel like you are about to fall out of bed. This is known as “hypnic jerk” and is totally normal. And although it is normal, it is pretty darn terrifying. We can feel like we are falling because our body is in between sleep paralysis, like we talked about above, and consciousness.
  3. Sleep talking/walking: One time at a sleepover, I was sleeping next to one of my friends, and in the middle of the night she started shouting all kinds of nonsence. In the morning she had no idea that she had been talking (more like screeching) in her sleep. Awkwarrrrrd. Studies show that between one and 15% of people walk in their sleep, and some even try to drive! Yikes. All of this happens while we are deeply asleep.

So, like I said earlier, some odd things can happen while you sleep. It is good to know about these things just in case they happen to you, because odds are, you will have a feel-like-you’re-falling moment while you’re sleeping sometime soon.

Happy snoozing!

Being as busy as I am, and as most high school students are, sleep is a hot commodity! I don’t get much of it. I’m always open to finding new ways to get the most out of the shuteye that I DO get, and I found a few useful phone aps to help me do just that! Since I’m on my phone a lot, I figured it was a good tool to help me maximize my sleepy time.

  1. “SleepCycle”: Turn on the app, then place your phone under your pillow. It will wake you up in the lightest part of your sleep cycle so you feel refreshed when you wake up. This is a good app for days when you don’t need to get up at a certain time or for nap times.
  2. “Spin Me”: This app acts as your alarm, and the only way to turn it off is to spin around a few times! No snooze button for you!plexusdesign33_1x
  3. Spotify’s “Wake Up Happy” playlist: Download the Spotify app and add the “Wake Up Happy” playlist to your library. Listen to this when you get up in the morning to help you feel happy and ready for the day.
  4. lux: This app helps prevent you from being kept up by your phone. We all know that you aren’t supposed to be looking at screens at night because the “blue light” emitted by your phone’s screen signals your brain to keep you awake. The app adjusts your phone’s color based on your local sunset time, which will eliminate the “blue light”, helping you fall asleep faster.

Happy snoozing!

Can’t Sleep? Use These Tips to Beat Your Insomnia!

At our age, sleep can make or break how our days unfold. Between editing videos and scheduling plans, sleep isn’t the first priority on my busy list. And when I get the opportunity, it’s often hard falling asleep with thoughts whirling through my head. Anybody else know the feeling? Here are some tips to beat your insomnia!Chelsea Crockett - Stressed quote

  • Stress is often the number one cause of insomnia. Take a deep breath and think of all of the good things in your life. Remember that what you’re stressing about probably won’t matter in a year or maybe even a week!
  • Lavender scent is proven to relieve stress and make you calmer and more relaxed. Apart from burning a lavender scented candle, you can buy (or even make!) your own lavender scented spray to mist your pillows and blankets with. It might not solve all of your problems, but it might put you at ease!
  • A lot of sites say that this tip actually works! Instead of using your bed for a place to do homework, watch TV, binge-watch Netflix, etc., use it solely for sleeping. That way your brain and body can use it as a signal for sleep. It may not work for you but it’s worth a try!
  • If you’ve been lying in bed for a while and can’t fall asleep, try doing a quiet activity that allows your brain and body to calm down. Reading is a great alternative for checking Twitter or Instagram. This way you’re not staring at a bright screen.

I hope these tips help you catch up on some much needed sleep!

Lately I have been having issues with getting a good 8 hours of sleep in. Between school, church activities, school, filming and editing, and spending time with friends, I have a hard time getting my 8 hours in! Even though that is the case, I know how important a good night’s sleep is, and I try to take naps when I can to balance out my sleep schedule. Here are 3 ways you can get the most out of your sleep so you can have enough energy to conquer the world!

  1. The best time to nap is between 1-3 pm: Studies say that you are the most awake during the day between 7-9 a.m., and your alertness levels start to drop after 11 a.m. between 1 and 3 p.m. you are at the lowest energy level if your whole day. That is why this is the best time to take a quick nap! Now I know that you are probably in school during this time, but on breaks and weekends keep this in mind!images (1)
  2. Drink coffee before your nap: That sounds a little backwards, right? Caffine takes 20 minutes to start waking you up, so drinking a cup of joe right before you sleep will mean it kicks in right around when you wake up. This helps with that groggy “where am I and what year is it” feeling right after you wake up!
  3. Cut down the screen time: An hour or two before bed, it is important to limit the amount of time you are looking at your phone and the TV. The blue light that is given off from those devices has been shown to suppress the production of melatonin, which is what your body produces to help you sleep. If you are on your phone or watching tv before bed, dim the screen as much as you can to reduce that blue glow.

Hopefully these tips help you catch some zzzz’s.

  2. Your muscles burn up a lot of calories during the day. To burn even more, try weight training to build up.
  3. Do NOT skip meals! Eating breakfast as soon as you wake up is your metabolisms sign to get moving!  The longer you wait to eat, or the fewer meals you eat, your metabolism will stop doing its job.
  4. If you love spicy food, then you’re in luck. The spicier the food, the quicker your metabolism kicks into gear.
  5. Drink water!! Water is amazing.  It not only speeds up your metabolism, but it gives you better skin, rids your body of toxins, and keeps you hydrated.  Keep a 64oz. water bottle with you and drink away throughout the day!

Do you ever feel like doing nothing but lay in your bed the day after a workout because you are so tired/sore? We have all been there, and the feeling can make us not want to ever workout again. As it turns out, taking a few days off of working out is actually good for you and increases your performance! It allows your muscles to heal and strengthen themselves. Here are a few tips on how to recover from a workout so you can get right back to it!

1.  Everyone recovers different

If your running buddy is ready to hit the trials for another 5 mile jaunt the next day but you can barely walk, don’t fret! Everyone’s body is different, and we all recover differently and within different time frames.hydrate

2. Taking a break is optional

If you are feeling pretty good the day after a tough workout, you don’t have to be a couch potato the next day if you feel tired or sore. The best thing is to get up and get moving a little bit. This could be something as simple as some yoga or swimming. This will increase circulation and move your fibers and tissues so they get hydrated and heal quicker.

3. Food matters

Watch what you eat before and after you work out. Your workout snack can vary depending on the activity you will be doing, but foods that are high in carbs and protein are always a good choice.

4. Sleep is vital

Getting in that 8 hours a night is so important! Exercise can improve sleep quality, and sleep can improve your energy to complete the workouts! It’s a win win.

So next time you hit the gym or the trails hard, follow these simple tips to make sure you recover right and are back at it in no time!

Whether you’re in high school or college, finals week is always a scary time.  Between studying for multiple classes and trying to keep your sanity, the last week of school can get hectic.  In order not to lose your cool, check out these tips for a smooth finals week!Chelsea Crockett- studying for finals

  • Put your phone on silent and set it across the room! I know this may sound impossible to some, but it’s totally worth it. Every 30 minutes allow yourself to check your phone! You’ll be super focused!
  • DON’T study too much! Sitting at a desk for 7 hours reading the same material won’t do much for you. Instead, study for an hour and then take a snack or TV show break. You’ve got to allow some time for yourself.
  • Get a good night’s sleep! If you think staying up till 4a.m. is the way to go you’re wrong! Try closing your books at 10p.m. and hitting the hay.
  • Keep distractions to a minimum. It’s easy for our minds to wander, so being in a quiet environment will help with that.
  • Eat brain foods like bananas, blueberries, and almonds.
  • DON’T stress out! If you start to panic about an exam it will be harder to study! Believe in yourself!

Good luck Insiders!

I recently had a friend travel to Europe so we started brainstorming ways to help her enjoy the long flight! Here are some ideas that we came up with:

1.  Bring Comfort in Your Carry-on!  It’s always good to pack a neck pillow, an eye mask, earplugs, and/or headphones. These items will allow you to catch some necessary ZZZ’s before landing at your destination. Chelsea Crockett- long flight essentials

2.  Bring Novels and/or Magazines!  Long flights or car rides are always a good time to chill and take time to read.  Whether you like to dive into a long novel or catch up on the latest Seventeen Magazine, reading can make the time fly!

3.  Bring your IPad, IPhone, and/or IPod!  Before your trip, be sure to download your favorite music, movies, books, and games.  Many hours can be spent entertaining yourself with these gadgets!  If you are flying with family or friends, why not challenge them to a friendly competition with one of your games.  A little competition is always good!

4.  Bring Snacks!  Airplane food is filled with sodium and preservatives…..not my favorite and certainly not healthy.  Pack some nuts, fruit, protein bars, etc. to keep yourself satisfied and not agitated because of lack of food.

I hope these tips will help you the next time you find yourself on a long journey to your favorite destination!

Bon voyage!

Surprisingly enough, some of your daily beauty habits aren’t making you more beautiful.  They could actually be dangerous!  Too many beauty products are abused, causing them to do harm instead of actually help.  Look below to see if you’re doing any of these dangerous beauty habits! Chelsea Crockett- over-exfoliating

  • Every girl wants bronzed, summer skin, but hitting the tanning bed can be detrimental to the health of your skin. Every time you tan you are killing healthy skin cells and increasing your chance of getting skin cancer. No tan is worth that!
  • Exfoliating is a great way to unclog pores and remove dead skin cells, but over-exfoliating or using a tough exfoliator can tear the skin and cause it to become more sensitive to products in the future.
  • Picking at zits is a deadly act. Once popped, peeling away at the dead skin will only cause the skin to take longer to heal or worse, scarring. Instead, leave it alone. It may look ugly, but the blemish will go away in no time.
  • Touching your face seems like a harmless task, but it’s actually a crime to your skin. Every time your hand touches your skin, you’re transferring whatever dirt or oil your hands have accumulated that day onto your face…clogging your pores.
  • If you use a lot of hair products, rinsing it out properly when you shower is important. Just washing it and quickly rinsing it is alright, but eventually the excess product will build up. Rinse your hair longer than you think you should.
  • Never sleep with your makeup on! When you get your beauty rest, your pores will clog leaving you an unpleasant surprise in the morning.

Taking care of your skin and body properly is so important for a healthy complexion!  Keep these in mind and you’re on your way to the best skin and hair you’ve ever had.

XOXO,

If you’re an avid traveler like I am, overcoming jet lag is very important.  If you’re wondering what jet lag is, it’s when your body has trouble adjusting in and out of time zones.  This can consist of disturbed sleep patterns, weakness, and disorientation.  Many don’t know how to respond to their body feeling this way and end up hurting themselves even more.  Keep on reading to find out how to get back on track…fast!Chelsea Crockett- time zones

Before you leave, make sure to rest up!  Sleep as much as possible.  If you’re planning on going to a faraway destination, try changing up your sleeping pattern before you leave to adjust easier.  If you’re traveling east, go to bed earlier and wake up earlier.  If you’re traveling west, go to bed later and wake up later.  Once you journey has started stay hydrated!  Drink as much water as you can.  Also, take caution with sleep medication.  Taking it to force your body to sleep will not help you adjust naturally.  This will cause you to be tired longer.

If you arrive to your destination in the morning, stay up as long as possible!  Forcing your body to get on a certain sleep schedule is the quickest way to adjust.  If you arrive at night, go to sleep right away.  If you’re feeling tired, try to get as much natural light as possible.  This will help your body set its natural clock.  If you’re going away for a weekend or taking a short trip, it’s easier for the body to just stay on its “home” schedule.

Next time you travel, try these simple tips to keep your body fueled…but most importantly, have an amazing time!!

Looking back at pictures of my tan skin and lighter hair, winter blues can set in pretty quick. Why not think of some ideas to chase them away? Often during the winter, we sleep more, eat more, and exercise less!  Here are some ways to keep the “winter blues” at bay!

  1. On a sunny day, make the best of it by getting outside to soak in some Vitamin D.  Bundle up, grab your bike, roller blades, running shoes, tennis racquet, etc. (You get the idea!  Use whatever you love!) and go outside to get some exercise.  Just a little time outside can make us dream of those warm sunny days that are just around the corner.
  2. Make an appointment for a facial, pedicure, and/or massage!  It’s always nice to be pampered.  So why not go for it….you deserve it.  I know those appointments can sometimes be expensive.  If that is the case, then call some friends over and look up DIY facials and nail designs.  You pamper a friend and then they pamper you.  Massages are easy with lotion or oil that you already have at home!Chelsea Crockett - Spa Day
  3. Anyone up for a hot tub party?  Make yummy appetizers and fun summer drinks and invite a group of your friends over!  Put on your suits and hop in the hot tub.  If you don’t have a hot tub, maybe one of your friends does.  You and a friend can eat, drink, and soak your blues away!

It won’t be long insiders, spring is just around the corner!  Until then, make the most of your free time by chasing winter melancholy away!
