Spiritual mismatch was a term I rarely ever heard of, let alone had given any thought of what it meant for my life and those around me.

Recently, I’ve been exposed to how important and crucial it is to be on the same page as those who you surround yourself with.

Ever heard of the quote: “your vibe attracts your tribe”? I can see how this reigns true in the lives of almost everyone around me. My friends that are loud and outgoing oftentimes tend to lean toward others who are also loud and outgoing. Same for the friends that are quiet, funny, crazy, etc.

Although that’s not always the case, and sometimes opposites do attract, we often like to group ourselves with the people who are similar to us. Instead of only looking for certain personality traits, we should also look for spiritual traits, those who can push us toward having a better relationship with the Lord.

Ever heard of the phrase “spurring one another on?” Hebrews talks about the importance of it in the lives of Christ followers.

Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

We should look for people who are going to push us toward God’s love and inspire us to do the deeds he wants us to accomplish. In this verse, he talks about “meeting together,” or in other words, fellowship.

Fellowship should be a big part of your life. God doesn’t just suggest it, he demands it. He knows that without a good group of people to continually “spur” you on, it’s easy to slip away from the path God has created for you.

2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”

Again, God speaks of the importance of fellowship. If we surround ourselves with people who have opposite values, morals, or beliefs, it can be hard to stay true to our own.  We need to have a good balance of people we can be influenced by and people who we ourselves can have influence on.

So, how can we avoid spiritual mismatch?

Take a step back and look at your life. Are you doing the things God speaks of in Hebrews and 2 Corinthians? Are you letting the people in your life influence you for the better?

I challenge you to make some changes in your life. Surround yourself with the people who “match up” with how you want to live your life.

It makes a world of a difference and will make you the best version of yourself that you can be!

5 Ways to Know If Something Is from God

Everything comes from God and everything can be credited back to the creator of the universe.  The sky, the ocean, our family, our house… these are just a few examples of the many things God has so graciously given us.  But other things, the not so good and the not so desired, can be hard to know if they’re actually from God.  Here are 5 ways to know if something is from God!

  • Simply ask. Pray. There is so much more power in prayer than we realize. Ask God to reveal to your heart whatever it is you’re struggling with.  You will hear God’s tiny whispers that can reveal so much more than you thought prayer could!
  • Look into scripture. Without even realizing it, some of the answers you’re searching for can be written directly into scripture.  Even simply googling “What does the Bible say about _____” can give you answers that are guaranteed to be from God since they’re written in His word!
  • Ask someone more knowledgeable about the topic. If you have a spiritual leader in your life, ask them for their own opinion.  Sometimes all we need is someone else’s input to see what we’re missing.
  • Be patient. Patience is key!  I can’t stress this enough.  Maybe God doesn’t want you to know right away what he’s doing in your life.  Be still!
  • Trust that God has your best interest. Sometimes we don’t always want what God has placed in our life, but I assure you it’s something God knows we need.

I hope this helps you in times of confusion and frustration.  Remember that every good and perfect gift comes from God!
