We all learned in school that going outside and getting some vitamin D was super important for our health. There is so much more to know about this crucial vitamin, and there are so many myths about its abilities out there! Here are some common misconceptions about vitamin D and the explanations behind the myths.

Myth: If you live somewhere sunny, you don’t have to worry about vitamin D:

Even if you live in a sunny climate like California or Hawaii you still might not be getting enough vitamin D. We live in a society that spends most of our time inside or in our cars, so we barely see the light of day. Your clothes cover up most of your skin, plus theimages (3) sunscreen that you wear also blocks out most of the sun rays that carry vitamin D. More on that later. So, even the most sunny populations suffer from vitamin D loss.

Myth: If you wear sunscreen you won’t get any vitamin D

Yes, it is true that good sunscreen blocks out the UVB rays that prompt your skin to produce its vitamin D. BUT, unless you are covering up every square inch of your skin, you are going to get at least some vitamin D intake. Even the tips of your fingers and the backs of your elbows can absorb the vitamin, not to fear!

Myth: You can get enough vitamin D from the foods you eat

Yes, foods like seafood and milk that are protein sources do contain some vitamin D. But unless you are willing to down multiple glasses of milk and a couple servings of salmon every day, then getting enough vitamin D in your diet is out of the picture.

Moral of the story? Spend some time outside during the day, in the shade, and get some vitamin D the natural way. It takes about 15-30 minutes for your body to absorb it’s daily vitamin D requirement, so go outside and run a mile or swim some laps!

Products to Cure Your Beach Depression!

When this time of the year rolls around, my excitement for summer starts to kick in. (And all of the pics of my friends at the beach over spring break surely don’t help!) The warm weather is finally here where I live which is one step closer to no school and sunny days! There are a few products I love to use when summer withdrawals start to kick in.

  1. I love covering myself in lotion the minute I get out of a warm shower. Chelsea Crockett - Bath and Body Hawaiian ScentsThe number one place to shop for my fave lotions is Bath & Body Works® (of course!). They have a line of Hawaiian scents in lotions, gels, body washes, etc. You can get a mango surf scent from Maui or a beach coconut smell from Waikiki. There’s a couple other aromas you can choose from as well!
  2. One of my top goals each year is to (hopefully) get as tan as I can during the summer! And with prom right around the corner, I like to try a couple self-tanners out to see if they can get the job done a little early. One that I’ve tried that turned out looking extremely natural is the L’Oreal® Sublime Bronze™ Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion. It doesn’t leave streaks and leaves you with a bronzed, beautiful body!
  3. During the summer, my hair actually turns a lot lighter! It’s like the sun gives me natural highlights, which I love! There are products that actually speed up this process and enhance those highlights. Sun-In hair lightener works really well and can be bought for only $4.99 at Ulta (or you can buy online, just click here!). You have to be careful because using too much might not turn out too well. Read the directions carefully and you’ll be just fine!

Hopefully these give you a sun kissed feeling when you’re missing the warm weather!

IT’S FINALLY HERE! Through all the late night studying, homework confusion, school lunches, etc., we can finally say it’s over (at least for the next few months!). Every summer, I try to make it better than the last. There are some tips and advice I’m going to consider going into these next few wonderful months, so I thought I’d share!

  • Don’t be afraid to say “yes” to something new. If something’s a little out of your comfort zone, such as trying a new food or riding that roller coaster you’ve always been too afraid of, DO IT!Chelsea Crockett - Cliff Jumping
  • Always spend your summer with those you love most such as your closest friends and family. Getting a group of my best friends together for a day at the zoo or a trip to the water park is always a good time :).
  • Don’t spend your summer sitting indoors watching a movie like you can do any other day of the year! Make your summer adventurous! Go hiking, go swimming, go on a late night ice cream run with your crush… Don’t be boring, it’s summer!

What mottos do you have jumping into summer this year? Lemme know insiders!

Which way to the beach? I know I’ll be dreaming of being ocean side all summer long. Although for most of these sunny months I’ll be stuck in the Midwest, I’m hoping I will get to adventure out to the coast for a few days. I know I am not the only one who is taking a trip to the beach. So for those of you who are, here are a few beach hacks to make your trip not only fun, but affordable and fabulous!

If you are in need of a cute tote bag but don’t want to spend the money, I have the perfect solution! Every-day local stores like Target, Marshalls, TJ Max, etc. all sell extremely affordable yet fashionable totes. You can find one as cheap as 99 cents!

When going on vacation, I like to Chelsea Crockett - Cover Up Dresspack a few stylish swimsuit cover ups along with my swimwear. I love, love, love lace or floral cover ups like the one on the right. Although cover ups are only worn for the walk to and from the beach/pool, I have recently discovered another use that’s worth a share! You can buy a slip (or if you have one that matches your cover up from another dress) and wear it under your lace or see-through cover up. Just like magic! Your cover up is transformed into a simple evening dress that you can rock to the night festivities!

Lastly, if you and the rest of your beach crew are sometimes a little forgetful, you may forget to buy the most important necessity for your trip… sunscreen! A quick trip to Target is an easy fix. One brand that often goes unnoticed is Coppertone’s baby sunscreen. Although the bottle says it is made specifically for babies, it works just fine for anyone.  Many of us have sensitive skin, so this sunscreen is perfect for us!

I wish the best of luck to all of you preparing to hit the beach this summer! – Chels

Hey everyone!

  • Eat some chocolate!  Sounds crazy, right?  Scientists say that chocolate can release mood-boosting chemicals in the brain that make us happier.  Even the taste and smell of chocolate can help give your mood a lift.

Vitamins do not only have certain health benefits such as boosting your immune system or providing energy; but, they also help in improving your skin.  Many of the vitamins you take in daily are doing wonders for your skin and you don’t even know it!  I’m here to bring these benefits to your attention so you can make sure you’re getting what you need for flawless skin!

  1. Vitamin A.  This one applies mostly for adults, but is still beneficial for us teens!  Vitamin A helps reduce the wrinkles on your face.  It also helps diminish acne and replenish dry skin, as well!
  2. Vitamin B.  You can’t go wrong with a cream or lotion that contains vitamin B as an ingredient.  It helps moisturize your pores and reduce irritation… what more could you ask for?
  3. Vitamin C.  This one will be useful for the sunny seasons coming up!  Besides the obvious fact that it boosts your immune system, vitamin C helps reduce the amount of sun damage on your skin.  Chelsea Crockett - TanningIf you can’t beat the heat, vitamin C also helps repair your sunburnt skin tissue :).
  4. Vitamin E.  This is also perfect for the summery months ahead!  This can help reduce the effects of the sun on your skin; so, don’t be afraid to lay out on the beach for a couple of hours :).  Eating foods high in Vitamin E works to prevent early aging, as well.
  5. Vitamin K.  This vitamin is perfect to brighten up your eyes.  It’s known for reducing those unwanted dark circles.

Good luck! – Chelsea

Do you ever catch yourself pressing the snooze button over and over again in the mornings? Or maybe you have to drink 3 cups of coffee before you even think about leaving the house! If you fall into either category, you could probably use a few tips on how you can make mornings a little less miserable!

  • Take a cold shower. If you’ve tried this before, you know how well it works! After being warm and cozy in bed, nothing can wake you up better than a cold shower.
  • Go for a jog. Exercising as soon as you get up is not only good for your body, but good for giving you a little extra energy for the day! Plus, knowing that you’ve completed a good work out can help motivate you for other tasks throughout the day!Chelsea Crockett - Morning Runs
  • Go outside. Sitting inside a dark room under your covers isn’t going to help you wake up. Try being in the sun or going into a room that won’t tempt you to doze off.
  • Have a good attitude. Now I’m not saying you’re going to suddenly wake up one day and be super happy about it… But starting your day off with a positive mindset is a baby step. I know how boring school can be, but think to yourself that it’s going to be a great day and it might just be!

If you’re already a morning person, share your secrets below!

Sunscreen is an essential product needed on any summer day and there lots of questions that come along with it! Does it really work? Do I have to reapply? Do I need a higher SPF? Here are a few common myths that can either be trusted or busted!

Myth #1: It’s cloudy today so I don’t have to wear sunscreen. FALSE! The sun is extremely powerful, and, although you can’t see it, its rays can sneak up on you. Apply sunscreen no matter what the weather!

Myth #2: My makeup has SPF so I’m covered. FALSE! Although your makeup may have SPF, it doesn’t cover your whole face. I suggest buying a face sunscreen or a moisturizer with SPF and applying it before your makeup for extra coverage.

Myth #3: I already applied my sunscreen for the day, so I don’t have to reapply. FALSE! Sunscreen actually needs to be reapplied every 2 to 4 hours. If you’re swimming or getting in water, it needs to be reapplied even more often than that.Chelsea Crockett - Baby Sunscreen

Myth #4: Baby sunscreen isn’t only for babies. TRUE! Baby sunscreen is actually great for those with sensitive skin, especially on the face! If you are one with sensitive skin and are interested in buying some, click here: http://tiny.cc/CoppertoneSunscreen.

If you are one who suffers from dry skin, you already know how annoying and unpleasant it can be. Whenever I notice it starting to appear on my body, I sometimes get self-conscious and want to hide it as much as I can! There are several ways you can beat dry skin and get rid of it. Below are a few of my favorites!

During the summer, we tend to dry our skin out by laying in the sun or swimming daily. Obviously, you can eliminate most of your dry skin by simply moisturizing with lotion. But over-scented lotions can sometimes dry your skin out even more; so, be careful with what you’re applying to your skin. Also, keep a healthy, balanced diet. By eating your daily fruits and vegetables, you’re getting the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to keep your skin hydrated.

Chelsea Crockett - Avocado Face MaskExfoliating is a big part in getting rid of dead skin AKA dry skin! Different exfoliating scrubs will do the job just fine as long as you apply it gently. Too rough of a scrub could end up hurting your skin instead of actually helping it! If you don’t have any scrubs at home, apply Vaseline! Other home remedies that are a little bizarre, are adding bananas or avocados mixtures to your dry patches. There are many recipes online that say what to include in your homemade mixture. Pick your favorite and go from there!

Lemme know how it goes :)! -Chels

The Truth about Freckles

When you start to think about it, freckles are weird.  They’re little brown spots on our skin that have a higher concentration of melanin than the rest of our bodies.  Some have them, some don’t.  Some love the, some hate them.  Some have them in the summer, but not in the winter.  Let’s get down to the truth on these crazy little specks we call freckles.

Freckles are a beautiful thing!  They make each person unique and their own individual.  Freckles often fade in the winter and get darker in the summer due to sun exposure.  When the skin is exposed to too much sun, your skin reacts by forming specks of melanin, otherwise known as freckles.  If you notice they are appearing rapidly, it might be a good idea to stay out of the sun for a little while.  If you don’t like your summer freckles, you can help prevent them by wearing sun screen, a hat, and clothing that covers your skin.

Although freckles are typically harmless, some can turn out to be dangerous.  It’s important to know your skin!   If you notice a freckle that is oddly shaped, different in color, or keeps randomly appearing and disappearing, get it checked out by your doctor ASAP!  Better safe than sorry!  If you don’t like your freckles, remember that you are unique and that’s what makes you beautiful.  You’re one of a kind!

I love you all!

Burning your skin can be tough to avoid when you spend endless hours of your summer out by the pool.  Of course, applying sunscreen can help, but there is always a chance of burning.  Although turning your skin red is not a good look, it’s also painful, can peel, and even cause cancer!  So what exactly happens when your sun burns?!Chelsea Crockett- sunscreen

When you lay out in the sun for too long, your DNA can actually get damaged.  Unlike a burn from the stove or a flat iron, sun burns can have a lasting effect.  A sun burn is a clear sign that UV radiation has damaged the skin.  Since your skin gets warmed up, blood rises to the top of the skin causing redness.  Once the redness starts to go away, your body reacts to the burn by peeling away the damaged cells.  Although new skin arrives, there lies a high chance of skin cancer.

When you’re out in the sun this summer, be smart and use sunscreen, a hat, or a cover-up to protect your skin.  Love your skin and have a wonderful summer!

Chelsea

Sunscreen is an accessory every Insider should sport this summer! It protects your skin from harmful UV rays which can cause skin cancer, and it also helps prevent wrinkles in the long run! There are a few things that you may not know about sunscreen, and I am here to teach them to you!

  1. You can still get skin damage with sunscreen: When your skin gets tan, that is actually a sign that it is damage, Coppertone-Sport-Sport-SPF-70+-Continuous-Spray-Sunscreenand for this reason experts say there is no such thing as a healthy tan. Over time, as your tan accumulates, so does the damage.
  2. Expensive doesn’t mean better: Just because the product is expensive doesn’t always mean that it is the best for you. The best sunscreen is the one you will actually use, so find a brand that works for you and stick with it.
  3. More is better: If you aren’t running out of sunscreen often, then you aren’t using enough! It takes about a golf ball amount of sun screen to cover your whole body for a day in the sun.
  4. Apply sunscreen last: Unless you are using foundation or powder that has spf included, you want to apply it last!

Next time you venture into the great outdoors, make sure to slather on some sunscreen!

Going to the salon to lighten your hair can be a pain.  Between the harsh chemicals and heavy price tag, it’s almost not worth it; not to mention the fading of the color over time!  Lucky for us girls, there are natural ways to lighten your hair this summer!  Getting sun-kissed hair has never been easier!Chelsea Crockett- lemon highlighter

  1. Boil one tea bag in water for 10 minutes and then rinse your hair with it. Leave the tea in your hair for 15 minutes before rinsing it out!
  2. Before lying out in the sun, squeeze a fresh lemon throughout your hair. The sun and lemon juice will act together to lighten your hair!
  3. Add cinnamon to a small amount of conditioner, enough to coat your entire head evenly, and brush it through your hair. Pin your hair up to leave it in for a few hours or for quicker results; use a shower cap so you can sleep with the mixture on overnight.
  4. Crush 8 or 9 vitamin C tablets and mix them together with your shampoo. Shampoo and condition as you normally would and rinse!

Remember, results take time!  You may need to do each treatment multiple times before noticing lighter hair!

It’s that time of the year again! Time to celebrate the best three months of the year. What’s better to do just that than a summer kick-off party? Not just any party, but one that people will remember! This is where you get to show your creative side and can come up with an awesome theme for you and your guests! Here are a few of my favorite ideas:

  • Obviously if you have a pool, Chelsea Crockett - Glow Sticksthat gives you plenty enough to entertain your guests with! But instead of just your average pool party, buy a ton of glow sticks and spread them throughout your pool! It will be super cool and unique. Also, have your guests wear glow sticks and bright colors. There are many other things to make your party “glow,” just think outside the box!
  • One of the first things I think of when I hear the word summer is the smell of a delicious backyard barbeque. Hosting a backyard BBQ is perfect for a small get together. If you have a mom or dad that’s good on the grill, ask them to be the cook for the night! Your friends will have a blast :)!
  • In honor of the warm weather and hot sun, throw a beach/luau themed party! Everyone can come dressed with leis, swimsuits, and other fun accessories! Start a bonfire, put on some music, and sit back and relax. Your guests will love the simple theme that reminds them of being on the beach! What’s more summer than that?

Send me pictures of your summer festivities and let me know of any other fun ideas you come up with in the comment section below!  -Chelsea

“Here comes the sun, do do do do…”  That Beetles song has been stuck in my head ever since the start of spring! I, like all of my fellow residents of the Midwest, am so tired of cold and clouds! I am ready for Mr. Sunshine to show his radiant face! One reason I am more than ready for sun and warm weather is because I found a really cool way to make sun tattoos! What is a sun tattoo? It is when you put a sticker on your skin and then spend the day out in the sun and at the end of the day take the sticker off and you have a pale spot in the shape of the sticker! This is a really cool idea because the pale spot stands out against your tan skin, creating a natural “sun tattoo”.chelsea crockett sun tattoo

A super easy way to make a sun tattoo is to put Elmer’s glue on your skin in the shape you want your sun tattoo to be, and then sunbathe for a while! A really important thing to keep in mind, though, is that you always need to put on sun screen before sunbathing. Those rays can be really damaging to your skin and cause premature aging. The sun tattoo will still show up if you use sunblock. When you think you are done sunning, you can wash the glue off!

Soak up the sun, darlings!

The sun can be your best friend and your worst enemy.  It’ll give you that lovely tan, but also give you a harsh burn.    Protecting your skin from the sun is extremely important and there are many myths about the sun.  Many think that sun screen will break your skin out, or that you don’t need to wear sunscreen, because you have naturally tan skin.  These are myths!  Don’t let these fool you.Chelsea Crockett- Oil Free Sunscreen

Most girls hate wearing sunscreen on their face, because they are afraid they will break out.  It’s normal to think that, but not true at all!  UV rays actually trigger acne and can make your skin much worse.  Many sun screen brands make oil free face sunscreen to keep your face from breaking out.  Coppertone Oil Free Faces is a great face sunscreen.  You can even buy it here: http://tiny.cc/Coppertone_Sunscreen

Tanning beds are extremely popular, especially with teenage girls like me.  Most think they aren’t that bad, but in reality, tanning in a tanning bed raises your chances of getting skin cancer by 75%!  That’s a huge percentage.  Think before you go “fake bake.”

The last myth about the sun is that waterproof sunscreen doesn’t need to be reapplied.  False! It is absolutely necessary to reapply about every two hours.  Waterproof sunscreen just means that it won’t come off in the water, but that doesn’t mean it won’t fade.  Stay safe in the sun and kick these myths!
