Why You (and I) Should Learn to Give and Take Compliments

Recently I have noticed something. Something that has really started to bother me. It is the fact that, as girls, we no longer know how to give and take compliments….

Recently I have noticed something. Something that has really started to bother me. It is the fact that, as girls, we no longer know how to give and take compliments. Why is this?

One of my philosophies is that we feel like we are being self-centered or “proud” when we take a compliment. When you are told a compliment, do you shrug it off? Why do we feel like we cannot believe the positive things other people tell us? Imagine if you accepted all of the compliments that are given to you instead of shrugging them off and trying to counteract them. How much would that change your self-confidence? Believing the positive things people tell us can be such a boost! We need to learn to see the good in ourselves that others see in us.compliment

Now for my philosophy on why we sometimes have a hard time giving compliments. This, to me, goes hand in hand with the reason we don’t take compliments as well as we should. We don’t know how the other person will react to our praise, whether they will shrug it off or accept it. I think, as girls, sometimes we can let the jealousy bug bite us. We can think that by giving another girl a compliment, we are setting them above ourselves and making them look better than we do. WRONG. Giving someone else a compliment is the simplest, but most impactful thing you can do for them! Compliments are free to give, and they can make someone’s day SO much better!

Moral of the story? Give sincere compliments, and learn to take them in return. Accept people’s praise, because you are worth their affirmation! Don’t think that by accepting a compliment you are being self-righteous or prideful. Learn to confidently accept people’s admiration with a kind smile, and understand that you deserve it. We also need to know the importance of GIVING complements. They can honestly make someone’s day. How great is it knowing you can take someone’s mood and flip it around, just by telling them that you like their outfit? It is so easy to do, so why not humble yourself and give out a compliment or two?

  1. 1 month of planned date nights: You know that horrible conversation you have with your BF before date night? The one that goes “what do you want to do?” “I don’t know…what do you want to do?” This gift saves you that convo! Have a bunch of date ideas written out on slips of paper, then fold them up and put them in a jar. This is a gift you will both enjoy!7-candy-bar-saying-ideas
  2. His favorite candy or a candy card: The way to a boy’s heart is food. Get him a mixture of his favorite candies all wrapped up super cute, or make him a creative card using candy like this one! He will laugh at your “sweetness”. 😉
  3. I like you because…”: Boys love to be complimented, just like girls! Maybe even more! They love to hear all the things you like about them. It lets them know how much you value them and appreciate them. Write things you like about them on slips of paper and put them in a jar for him to read when he needs a little pick-me-up. You can write anything you want, he will appreciate your thoughtfulness. It can be something as small as “you have the cutest smile”.

Right now I am in a season of life that holds many unknowns. Things such as where I am going to college, what my major is going to be, where I will be in one year, and many more. These worries can sometimes get the best of me and cause me to feel anxiety. There are a few things that make my anxiety and worry feel smaller and more manageable. I hope they can do the same for you!

  1. Make lists: Break things down into small, manageable tasks. Instead of listing “apply to ___ college” say “download application to __.” Make the tasks smaller so that they don’t seem so daunting, and the more small tasks you have on your list the more you can cross off!anxiety
  2. Do some tidying up: When I have a dirty room it seriously stresses me out. Like, I feel like I don’t have my life together. It is distracting! If you are ever feeling overwhelmed, clean your room and put everything away where it needs to go. You will feel sorted out, accomplished, and ready to take on anything!
  3. Take a walk: Go outside and take your dog, or your mom or sister, for a walk. The exercise will clear your head and give you a break from stress.
  4. Cuddle with your dog: Or, in my case, dog(s). Their unconditional love is guaranteed to calm you down and warm your spirits.
  5. Be nice to yourself: Give yourself a break and don’t be too hard on yourself. Your emotions are valid, and you are not the only one going through a tough spot! You are strong. In fact, you’re pretty stinkin’ amazing.

These all help me calm down and de-stress. But you know what ALWAYS never fails to put my heart at peace? Putting in a prayer to the Big Man Upstairs. Pray to God to give you peace and comfort in your hard time, and ask for His guidance.

Its fall yall! It’s a great time to be alive…and to be single! Yeah, going to the pumpkin patch with a cute dude sounds super fun, but you know what…

Its fall yall! It’s a great time to be alive…and to be single! Yeah, going to the pumpkin patch with a cute dude sounds super fun, but you know what else sounds fun? The stuff below! Here are a few reasons why being single in the fall is fabulous.

  1. Guys in flannels: fall = flannels, flannels + cute dudes = heart eyes emoji. And you can stare because you are single!single 4
  2. Guilt free PSL indulgence: You won’t have to worry about a guy saying “don’t you ever get tired of pumpkin spice..?”
  3. No cheesy couples Halloween costume: Yes, couples Halloween costumes can be cute, but they’re sometimes slightly obnoxious. Like, if I want to be Elsa from Frozen, no one can stop me! I don’t need a dude to sing “Let it Go” at the top of my lungs with. I’m a solo act.
  4. Candids.: You and your gal pals can take “candid” pictures of yourselves mid-laugh in the pumpkin patch, looking like Instagram models. You don’t need a guy to have a impromptu photo shoot, that’s what bffs are for. Guys are not so good at staged candids. “Look happy! You look mad. Just act like you’re happy then! Ugh, my friends are way better at this than you are.” That is how I imagine that conversation with a guy going.

See? Being single during the fall can be loads of fun. Having a guy is fun too, and there are tons of fun fall date ideas out there, but this post is for my single ladies.

Fall is one of my favorite times to go on dates. The weather is just getting to be chilly, which means you can dress cute without being worried that you will sweat your brains out. Plus, your hair won’t plaster to your forehead or go poofy with humidity! SCORE! Anyway, autumn holds lots of opportunities for super fun dates. Here are just a few of my favs!

  • Corn maze: Go get lost together in a corn maze! You will have a blast trying to find your way, bumping into each other, 15-Fabulous-Fall-Date-Ideas-Pumpkin-Patch-Datelaughing the whole time!
  • Pumpkin picking: Go have a blast picking out the perfect pumpkin! You will have so much fun riding out to the patch and trying to find a better pumpkin than the other ;). Plus, you can make pumpkin pie or roast the seeds with the insides of your precious pumpkins!
  • Pumpkin decorating: After you go pick out the pumpkins together, have a decorating contest!
  • Haunted house: Getting to jump into your boy’s arms when a creepy zombie scares you= the best kind of date. 😉
  • Apple picking: Go apple picking together, then make yummy treats with the apples you picked!
  • Go to a football game: Football games are one of the best fall activities if you ask me. You will have a blast cheering on your favorite team together!
  • Rake leaves…and then jump through them: Pretty self-explanatory. Leaves + you + your man + a couple of rakes = hours of fun and a leaf-free yard.
  • Have a Halloween movie marathon: Grab that pumpkin pie or apple dumplings you made together, cozy up, and turn on a good Halloween movie!

Don’t have a boy toy? Grab a gal pal and do all of these things together! They may take a little bit of tweaking, but they will still be a super blast!

And sometimes, that really can seem like the truth! In my age group, there seems to be a lack of gentlemen, and finding a quality guy can feel like finding a needle in a haystack. Don’t lose heart! There is a guy out there for you that will treat you like a lady. Here are the signs that you have found a true gentlemen.

  1. He treats the women in his life with respect: Whether it is his mother, sister, or other friends that are girls, a boy should respect and treat them with dignity. He does this by listening to them when they talk and by affirming and defending them. I was always told to watch how a boy treats his mother, because that is a sign of the way he will treat his girlfriend.real-men
  2. He values you: A gentlemen will lift you up, not tear you down. He will make sure you know how valuable you are!
  3. He is confident without being cocky: No one likes being with a guy that is full of himself. A gentlemen is humble, and he also seeks guidance from people that are older and wiser than him, aka he is not a know-it-all!
  4. He is smart with money: This one isn’t as big of a deal in high school, but knowing how to wisely handle money is a biiiiiiig deal as you get older! So, having a guy who knows how to save money and doesn’t blow it all the second he gets it.

Finding a true gentlemen may be hard, but it is worth the wait! You are worth it.

If you follow me on any sort of social media then you know that I have some pretty great dude friends. There is just something totally awesome about having guy bffs (who don’t have feelings for you and vice versa). Here are my top reasons why having guy friends is better than having a boyfriend. 

1. You can be gross together: If you haven’t washed your hair in two days and your clothes don’t match, no worries! If you feel totally unattractive, that is totally fine because you know you don’t have to impress him, and he feels the same way when he is with you! You guys can be gross and not give it a second thought. FullSizeRender (10)
2. He saves the drama for his mama: Have you ever heard someone gush about their boyfriend one day and then cry about how terrible he treats her the next? Ain’t nobody got time for that drama! Even the best relationship comes with it’s own hardships. Your friendship with your guy bff is a save haven from boy drama because there is no games being played and no hormonal emotions involved. You are free to be honest and open with them!
3. You don’t have to worry if you are bugging him: Sometimes when I am talking to a guy I secretly wonder if I am annoying him by texting him or just annoying him in general. You don’t have to worry about your dude bff getting annoyed and dumping you and and you know he will be honest with you when you are being a little too overbearing. 
 
Guy bffs are fun! There are no expectations, no competing emotions, and they have a different point of view on things than girls do! I am so grateful for my guy bffs. I don’t know what I would do without them!

3 Realities You Face When You Leave Home For College

Quite a few of my friends are going away to college in the next few months, and I will be going away myself in a year! Wow, that is a scary thought. Even though you are excited and anxious to start your new life, there are a few hard realities that you get hit with early on when you move away from home and take on the world all by yourself. 

1. Staying in touch with friends and family back home is not easy.

When you move away you promise your family and friends that you will keep in touch, and tell your mom you will call twice a day every day. You don’t realize how hard that really is until real life kicks in. You start class, you join College-Just-Aheadclubs, you meet friends, you get a job, all of these things start competing for your time. Before you know it, it has been a week and you haven’t called your mom! It is so important to let people back home know you are thinking of them to keep those relationships strong. 
 

2. Grocery shopping is hard!

At home, the cupboard and fridge is always fully stocked complements of mom. In college, you have to do your own grocery shopping! Gasp! Figuring out what food is in what isle and how much food you can buy with your grocery budget all while trying to keep your meals on the healthy side is harder than you think! 

3. Your roommate will eventually drive you crazy, no matter how much you like her!

Yes, roommates are great for sharing clothes and class notes and for venting your latest boy troubles, but eat sleep and breathing in the same place as them 24/7 can sometimes be a bit much. Her messy habits will start to drive you nuts, and that toothpaste clump that she clogged the sink with will make you want to scream with frustration. But, remember, you probably do things that driver her crazy too! 🙂

One last tidbit.. Always remember that your parents are your biggest cheerleaders and are always there when you need them. I know the hardest thing about moving out is that I will be away from my mom. It is the worst part of growing up! But, it has to happen some time, so make the best of it when it does. 🙂

If so, you are the average teenage girl J. I read a recent study about the top traits that women want in the guy they date, and they really aren’t surprising! In fact, most of them were on MY list of traits I want to see in my guy. Here is a list of the top character, personality, and practical skill traits females want in a man.

 

TOP CHARACTER TRAITS: FAITHFULNESS, DEPENDABILITY, AND KINDNESS

When it comes to the character of your guy, most women say faithfulness is a top priority. Rightflully so! You want to know that he is there for you and only you, and that he will stick with you through the tough times. You also want to know that he is dependable and that when he says he is going to do something, he does it! You want him to be responsible. Lastly, you want him to be kind. I know that it is sometimes tempting to fall for the “tough guy” or “bad boy”, but as you grow up kindness wins. Most girls want a man who will be sweet to her AND her mother!

TOP PERSONALITY TRAITS: SENSE OF HUMOR, PASSION, AND INTELLEGENCE

I don’t know about you, but I love when I can laugh with my guy. Having a sense of humor makes life so much more fun! Passion is another must. You want a guy who is passionate about something, whether it is playing the piano, playing basketball, or evenrelationship-perspectives cooking! Another personality trait that women swoon over is intelligence. Nothing beats a guy who is great at problem solving!

TOP PRACTICAL SKILLS: LISTENING, ROMANCING, HELPING

Studies have shown that women love a guy who listens. This is a no-brainer! Girls feel safe and loved when a guy will sit there and let them vent and listen to their problems. Romancing is a given, we love a guy who can show his soft side and can sweep her off her feet! And the last one, helping. If he can help me cook a dinner, clean my room, or run errands, he is on the fast track to winning my heart! Who agrees?!

She is your built in best friend: Because you guys have been together since birth, may have shared a room at one point, and have lived in the same vicinity for as long as you remember, you have a built in BFF! That dreaded time of the year where all of us have to wake up early and get back into a routine is here again. While I don’t necessarily love school, I do try to make the best of it!  I wanted to share a couple tips to help chase away the blues whether they’re school related or not!

Our minds tend to wander and often times that leads to worry. Fear of the unknown can make us anxious, especially when starting a new year of school. I’ve recently read a book that talks aboutChelsea Crockett - Worry Quote taking control of your mind and thinking on purpose.  You can start by thinking with a grateful heart. As soon as your mind starts to drift to negativity or worry, change the channel and think of good things about the situation. It really works!

If your mind is busy thinking about the things you’re thankful for there won’t be room for worry or sadness. I’m a firm believer that positivity is the key to almost anything in life. So… you can start there and then think with a purpose and plan. Hopefully, your blues will be washed away!

Who says you have to have a boyfriend to make you happy? So many girls find their self-worth and happiness through the guys they date. I want to tell you that the single life is a GOOD life! Just because you don’t have a boy toy doesn’t mean you aren’t pretty or likeable, it just means God has bigger plans for you! Here are a few ways to be happily single.

  1. Enjoy your independence: When you have a boyfriend you aren’t just thinking of yourself anymore because your actions impact both of you. When you are single, you have so much freedom! Want to go out with friends Friday night? DO it! You won’t have a boyfriend competing for your attention! Enjoy this time with your girlfriends, because before long you will all be going off to college and growing apart as you grow up.FullSizeRender (8)
  2. Figure YOU out: These teenage years are crucial for us teenage girls! These are the years where we are figuring out who we are and what we are all about. Sometimes having a boyfriend can cause us to put our thoughts/feelings on the back burner and focus more on his. Be confident and sure of yourself and who you are!
  3. Trust God’s timing: I don’t stress about being single because I know that it is just God preparing the perfect guy for me. Plus, he is preparing ME for the perfect guy! You may feel ready to meet your prince charming, but God may have other plans. Don’t stress, just enjoy life where God has you. The perfect guy will come along when you least expect it. 

So, if you are single, just enjoy it! I know I do!

1.  You actually start paying attention to sports so that you can converse with him. You want to impress him and show you what a sports-savvy girl you are!

2. You let him have the last bite of your favorite dessert. And you did it with a smile on your face!

3. You keep it cool on social media. When you were younger and you got a boyfriend you gushed and bragged to all your friends, but now you know that relationships are between 2 people, not between 500 of your Facebook friends AND you. Yes, the occasional picture of you two together is to be expected, but you aren’t posting about him on the daily.

4. You start shopping for him more than you shop for yourself.

5. Every floor is a dance floor, even the Walmart isle! When you hear your favorite song you break out in dance together.falling-in-love-600x450

6. You show him you like him, even when he smells weird. What I mean is, after you guys work out or are outside doing things and you are both smelly and sweaty, you still give him a big ‘ole bear hug. Showing him that you like him even when he is a slippery sweaty mess means the world!

7. You aren’t afraid to ugly cry in front of him.

8. You spend 6 hours baking his favorite cupcakes (which is 6 hours you should have been doing homework) because you know he will be over the moon when he finds out you baked them just for him.  

9. You do everything you can to impress his family, because you know that the way to your boy’s heart is by being nice to his momma.

10. You listen to and laugh at alllllll of his bad jokes. And then tell him that he is just the funniest guy on the planet!

Traveling with friends can be fun! Heck, me and the ChelseaCrockett.com team just took a trip to LA and had a blast! But, traveling with friends isn’t always a walk in the park. Face it, even your closest BFF can sometimes drive you batty. Here are a few tips on how to stay sane when traveling with friends!

1.      Pick wisely: Be smart when picking a travel companion. Pick a friend who you really get along with and who you genuinely like spending time with. A bad pick can end in an even worse trip!

2.      Communicate: Before the trip gets underway, talk to each other about what you want to get out of the trip that way no one ends up disappointed or feels left out. You want to make sure you both have the best time ever!IMG_9774

3.      Be considerate: Make sure you keep an eye on how your friend is doing aka their mood. You want to make sure you are both energized and happy to explore!

From short road trips to week-long getaways, any type of trip with a friend is a good one! The memories you make together will last a lifetime.

If you are in a relationship of have ever been in one, you know that they are a lot of work. Happy couples have a few easy methods that help them, well, stay happy! These little tidbits of advice are things that I have learned and what my friends have learned through the wonderful world of dating.

  1. Smile when you see them: It feels amazing to walk into the room and immediately see your crush’s face light up. It makes you feel so special! Even if you aren’t particularly thrilled to see your man friend, at least act happy to see them! This will set a happy mood for the two of you.happy-couple-valentines-day
  2. Randomly text them: A lot of us are busy throughout the day, so texting someone constantly just isn’t an option. But, a cute random text every once in a while can really brighten their day and them appreciate you so much.
  3. Share your day with them: Every day, take a few minutes to share your days with each other. Tell them your concerns, your goals, your hopes and your frustrations! It will really strengthen your relationship.
  4. Tell them thanks: For everything! Did they hold the door for you? Thank them. Cook you dinner? Thank them. Help you out with homework? Thank them.
  5. Complement the socks off of them: A little complement can go a long way! You know when your guy tells you he likes the way you are wearing your hair, and it makes you smile from ear to ear because you feel valued and treasured? He needs the same feeling from you! By building each other up, you are creating a happy environment!

There are so many more ways to make your relationship a happy one, you just have to be willing to work at it!
