As you look at the day before you, what emotions consume you? Do you wake up with an immediate mindset of dread and negativity? Or are you filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s ahead?

It’s natural for us to wake up and grumble about our day full of work meetings or our school day filled with tests and presentations. It’s human nature to want to stay in bed and not face the responsibilities you have awaiting you.

I’ve learned that those first few thoughts I have in the morning are an indicator of how my mood will be throughout the day. I’ve read that if you train your thoughts away from negativity first thing in the morning, it prevents your head from entering a space you don’t want to be in.

So, as you look at the day before you, consider these few things.

Approach the day with gratitude.

Have one of your first thoughts in the morning be thoughts of praise. Thank God for the beautiful morning weather, the quick morning commute, the quiz that ended up being easier than you thought it would be… When you decide first thing to approach each situation, good or bad, with focusing on the good, you will be more joyful and excited for even the simplest of things.

Have an attitude of “get to” not “have to”.

When I was younger, one of my teachers told us to change our words from “have to” to “get to.” For example, we “get to” go to school to learn more, we “get to” go to practice even though today may be harder than others, we “get to” go to meetings all day for work… Phrases like this humbles us and makes us remember how blessed we are for even the simplest of things.

Counter negative thoughts with positive ones.

Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

I practice this daily and always tell others to do the same. As soon as your mind starts picking out the negatives, it can quickly spiral into a bad attitude. I know this from experience! But when you immediate counter the bad thoughts with positive ones, you gain an entire new perspective. Think about the things that are worthy of praise like the verse says above!

When you wake up tomorrow, how are you going to approach the day ahead? Are you going to try and make a conscious effort to do the things above? Or are you going to mumble and grumble through your day?

I encourage you the next few days to try these attitude and mindset changes. God wants us to be our most joyful and hopeful selves, which is hard to achieve when we’re full of negativity and dread. Take advantage of every day, we only have so many!

The morning is my favorite part of the day! I always get so much accomplished when I wake up early and actually use the time I have when I wake up.

There is a great amount of potential in the mornings. We’re well rested, ready to take on the day, and have the opportunity to start the day off on the right foot.

There are several habits I like to incorporate into my morning routine that prepare me for the day and grow my relationship with the Lord. I encourage you to do the same!

Before you even get out of bed, say a prayer to God.

Ask him to bless your day and prepare you for whatever comes your way. I like to do this before I do anything else so he can guide each end every step that I plan to take throughout my day. When you get in the habit of doing this, your first thought when you wake up will be to talk to God!

Ask God for his grace.

Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Isn’t it amazing to know that God’s grace and mercy is new every day? We will sin time and time again, but God extends his forgiveness no matter how big our mistakes are. In your morning prayer, ask God for his grace for when you’re tempted into sin. We are certain to be tempted and fall short throughout the day, more often than we realize.

Spend some time in the Word.

Do you know just how powerful the Word of God is? Spending as little as five minutes reading the Bible will equip you for the day and fill your life with joy, guidance, and so much more.

Joshua 1:8 says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

When you meditate on the Bible, you learn how to walk the walk and talk the talk. You learn how to follow God’s plan and design for your life. It’s more than just reading stories and learning history. You’re reading the actual words of the Lord and those who walked alongside him!

Begin the day with gratitude.

It’s easy to wake up and grumble about work, school, or whatever occupies your day.  I know I’m guilty of this at times! But starting the day with thoughts of praise and gratefulness will leave your mind with little to no space for negativity.

1 Chronicles 16:34 says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”Repeat this in your head throughout your morning and praise him for even the smallest of blessings!

Start each day with these four habits and see how they change your attitude toward the day ahead. Each day is a blessing! Use them wisely. 🙂

The Bible is filled with endless “do’s” and “don’ts” that instruct us on God’s perfect way to live our lives. It’s like he provides the perfect “to-do list” to ensure us joy, hope, and trust in him.

There are several “do’s” that God wants us to live by. Meditate on them and put them into practice, every day and for the days to come!

  • Pray continually.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

When we pray continually, God reveals things to us that he never would’ve without our constant communication with him. Prayer is so, so important and it should never get taken advantage of. It’s so easy to pray that we often forget about how truly amazing it actually is. Sit down, talk to God, and lean on him, not forgetting the power and awesomeness of prayer! 

  • Trust in the Lord.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust is always hard no matter who it may be given to, or lack thereof. There is so much comfort found in the fact that God assures us on trust so many times throughout the Bible. Proverbs 3:5-6 is the perfect example of this! When we lean on God and not ourselves, honestly and truthfully, God shows us his perfect way.   

  • Be thankful for even the small things.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” – James 1:17

When we practice thankfulness, we develop a whole new mindset. Instead of praising God for only the big things that occur in our lives, try thanking him for even the smallest of blessings. It may be the short line at the grocery store or the good grade you got on a quiz. Whatever it may be, thank him continually and in ever circumstance!

  • Dive into scripture.

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” – Romans 15:4

The Word of God should never be taken advantage of. When we have God’s actual word right in front of us, we should meditate on it and discover all it has to offer.

  • Steer clear of gossip.

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” – Ephesians 4:29

God commands us not once, but several times in the Bible to stay away from bad conversation. Gossip not only spreads rumors, but it attracts drama and unwanted attention. Be mindful of the conversations you’re having with others. Be sure to only involve yourself with conversations that build people up, not tear them down!

There are tons of other things you could add to this list, but these are some of the more obvious “to-do’s” that God gives us in his word. Stay alert and conscious of putting these into effect!

Thanksgiving Thoughts: Things to Be Grateful For

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the endless blessings in your life. From the bed you sleep in to the family and friends that surround you, there are so many things to be thankful for.

Around this holiday, I always like to reflect on what God has given me throughout my life. There is nothing too small or too big to thank God for, and there’s no greater time to present your praises to him than during this season of Thanksgiving!

2 Corinthians 9:11 says, “Give thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Every day on after this day of thankfulness, be conscious of how often you show your gratitude to God. 2 Corinthians says to give thanks always not just in seasons of thankfulness.

“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” – Psalm 107:8-9

God takes notice when we praise him for the things he’s given us. He satisfies and fills us with all good things. Like this verse says, we should always praise God for his unfailing love and the deeds he does for us! There is no limit on how often we can present our praises to him.

I saw a quote that changed my perspective on thankfulness. It said, “Imagine if you woke up with only the things you thanked God for the day before.” I thought about the reality of this and it changed how I talked to God before I went to sleep at night.

I began to thank God for even the smallest things in my life. I thank him for every meal, every friend, every opportunity… I thank him for the weather, the apartment I live in, the car I drive… Sometimes I even make a list when I’m feeling extra grateful that I can look back on when I need a pick-me-up.

It’s easy to compare your life to others and point out what they have that you don’t. When you start to do this, make a list like I mentioned above. And what better day to start doing this than on Thanksgiving? Once you see how long your list really is, it’ll automatically change your mindset about the things you have in your life.

So, take time today and reflect on all of these things. Spend some time with God and just talk to him! End your Thanksgiving with a time of gratefulness and thankfulness. It’s the best day to do so. 🙂

I’ve said time and time again how worry and anxiety can take such a hold on your life. One second your filled with joy and peace and the next you…

I’ve said time and time again how worry and anxiety can take such a hold on your life. One second your filled with joy and peace and the next you feel a wave of worry rush over you.

Unfortunately, it’s something that really never goes away. The only way to stop it is to change your attitude and mindset toward it. I saw a quote on Pinterest that talked about trading worry for worship, and how big of a difference this small step can make in your life.

For example, if you can’t sleep at night because you’re anxious about tomorrow, change your thoughts to those of worship and praise. Thank God for the blessings in your life instead of questioning him for the things that are making you worrisome.

One of my favorite verses ever comes from the MSG version of the Bible. I think it’s so beautifully put and can be something we all forget so often in this world.

Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” 

When we keep company with the Lord, life gets a whole lot better. It may not necessarily get easier, but we learn how to deal with situations more freely and lightly like the verse says above.

If you let it, worry can fill every area of your mind. It can make you be anxious over things you’ve never even thought of or considered. I’ve dealt with this time and time again, and it can truly take you over if you let it. Although it doesn’t go away at the snap of a finger, there are ways to retrain your mind to think of praise and blessings instead of worries and worst-case scenarios.

Some of the biggest areas of my life where I find my thoughts wandering are school, relationships, the future, etc. Sound familiar?

When it comes to school, I try to revert my thoughts to praising God for my education and the friends I’ve met through it. When it comes to relationships, I trade my worry in for thankfulness for that person in my life. When it comes to the future, I thank God for the present and praise him for the people and situations I’ve been blessed with.

You will never truly silence worry until you replace it with something better. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Even the Bible says countless times to talk to God with thanksgiving. Praise him for all the goodness in your life. There is nothing too big or too small to lift up to him. Start today by changing your worry to worship!

Thankfulness is a learned trait.

It’s something that has to become a habit, by practicing it over and over again.

Intentional thankfulness is an area I’ve been trying to grow in. When you learn to be thankful for even the little things, your whole outlook completely changes.

On the days that don’t go as planned or the days that seem like the world is against you, it can be hard to find even the smallest things to be thankful for.

I have a challenge for you. On these days, when your mood is down and your ground is shaken, start with gratitude. Let’s take a look at what God has to say about it.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

The Bible doesn’t say to give thanks in some circumstances, it commands us to give thanks in all circumstances. Even on our worst days, we should make an effort to see the good around us.

For some of us, this comes naturally. For others, it can take a conscious effort to look for the good in situations.

The Bible also talks about generosity and how it too can lead to thankfulness.

2 Corinthians 9:11 says, “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”

When we humble ourselves and give to others, we become more thankful for what we have. Whether that be physical giving like food, gifts, etc. or giving time through volunteering or simply helping out a friend, our day-by-day attitude changes!

When we swallow our pride and humble ourselves, God does something in our hearts. He reveals even the smallest of blessings to us, things you never would’ve seen before you allowed him to work in your life.

It’s worth a try, right?

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.” 1 Timothy 4:4-5 gives us the truth about God’s creations. Everything is good and nothing is to be rejected.

Sometimes God sends us blessings in disguise. When your boyfriend breaks up with you or you fail a test, remember that there are hidden things you can be thankful for, you just have to change your thinking!

Everything always comes full circle, whether it be the in next week or 5 years down the road. Maybe you’ll meet the real love of your life soon after your boyfriend breaks up with you. Or maybe that failed test led you to pick a major you’re more passionate about.

Whatever it may be, thank God. Thank him for the setbacks, the disappointments, the unexpected twists and turns. You never know what he has planned for you.

And if it were me, I would take his plan over mine, every single time.

Being thankful is a year-round job, not just a thing we do around Thanksgiving. Actually, it has been scientifically proven that being thankful has health benefits! Gratitude is something that we all can show every day. Showing others that we are grateful for them makes us happier, improves our relationships, productivity, health, and even our sleep! Here are 10 ways that having an attitude of gratitude can benefit you.

  1. Sleep: My favorite! By writing down a few grateful thoughts before bed, your stress levels are reduced and your relaxation response is triggered.
  2. Emotions: Being grateful reduces toxic emotions like rage, regret, and frustration. It reduces feelings of envy and makes our experiences happier and also helps us recover from stress!
  3. Relationships: Showing others you are grateful for them helps boost your friendships. Showing others kindness by doing things like holding the door and saying thank you makes you feel good inside as well as shows others you care. People want to be around people like that!
  4. Self-esteem: We perform better and act better when we are confident and happy. Gratitude reduces our feeling of jealousy because instead of feeling jealous or resentful about what other people have, we are grateful for what we have and are able to appreciate other people’s accomplishments.

Having an attitude of gratitude can really change your outlook on life and brighten it! An easy way to get in the habit of being thankful is to keep a gratitude journal. Simply write down 3 things you are grateful for as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed. It can be things as simple as the sunshine, or even a great score on a test. Train your mind to default to positivity. It will change your life.
