Are You Hot or Cold?

If you were to rate your relationship with God on a scale from 1-10, with 1 being cold and 10 being hot, where would you land?

Now, I’m not saying you should rate your faith in God on a scale, but I do want you to consider one thing: are you lukewarm for God?

You might be thinking: What? Lukewarm? What does that even mean?

I would define lukewarm as being a 5 on the scale. Sure, you believe in God, but your life doesn’t fully reflect the way a godly life should look. Maybe you go to church on Sundays and open your Bible every once in a while, but are your thoughts and actions reflecting that of a follower of Christ?

When I first started following God, I could’ve considered myself a “lukewarm” Christian. I could talk the talk but I not always walked the walk. I would pray occasionally and request the things I wanted from God, but my life didn’t reflect that of a Christian’s at all.

I read a quote that completely changed my heart and my perspective.

“Following Christ isn’t something that can be done halfheartedly or on the side. It is not a label we can display when it is useful. It must be central to everything we do and are.”

When we go to class, we shouldn’t only talk to God when we need a good grade on a test or want an A on a paper. He should be at the center of our day. Someone we thank for the little things.

In our group of friends, we shouldn’t only pray for our friends when they’re going through a break up or needing to nail a good interview for a job. We should stray away from gossip, temptation to fall into sin, and other things that don’t reflect that of a godly person.

In high school, I would be filled with fear or anxiety about both big and little things in my life. One way I became “hot” for God was by leaning on him and giving him control instead of worrying about how I could be in control of my life.

I’ve learned that there are times when we may not feel like spending time with God, or it just seems like He is not present at all. With my doubts and questions, it seems as if He is so far away. Recently, this has been my battle. If I’m honest, it hurts and I hate that I “feel” this way. But I push through. The best thing to know through this time is that God isn’t surprised by this. He wants me to want Him, and I want Him so much. So I pray for a heart that wants Him earnestly.

When Paul was talking about being “lukewarm” he meant this with the way we live our lives, the way we talk, who we choose to hang with, etc. So, if you’re questioning God, or if you feel as if you have a hard time walking in your faith right now, don’t lose heart. The God above who knows you inside and out, knows your struggle. He wants you to talk to Him, and He may be trying to walk you through the desert for a period of time to teach you something. Lean in. Step in faith. This turned into a tangent, but I believe someone needed to hear it.

He’s a jealous God, and he wants us to fall in love with him and everything that comes along with the journey.

“Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive. Serve the Lord. When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful.” – Romans 12:11-12

Why You Should Put on the Armor of God

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Ephesians 6:14-17

The Armor of God is something that you can’t see or touch but can feel it all around you.  It’s something that God equips us with that we can choose to put on morning by morning or completely ignore as a whole.  There are five different parts to this armor: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit.  Each part of God’s armor has a different use that clothes you with the strength to get through the day.

If you wake up morning by morning and allow God to clothe you in each of these things, you’ll be 10x stronger in battling situations.  When you’re discouraged, you can use the belt of truth and the shield of faith to remember how much God loves and cares for you.  When you’re tempted, you can use the sword of the spirit to defend yourself against Satan.  There are so many different ways to use each part of the armor of God.  He gives you each of these tools so you can battle each day by walking firmly with him!

5 Ways to Know If Something Is from God

Everything comes from God and everything can be credited back to the creator of the universe.  The sky, the ocean, our family, our house… these are just a few examples of the many things God has so graciously given us.  But other things, the not so good and the not so desired, can be hard to know if they’re actually from God.  Here are 5 ways to know if something is from God!

  • Simply ask. Pray. There is so much more power in prayer than we realize. Ask God to reveal to your heart whatever it is you’re struggling with.  You will hear God’s tiny whispers that can reveal so much more than you thought prayer could!
  • Look into scripture. Without even realizing it, some of the answers you’re searching for can be written directly into scripture.  Even simply googling “What does the Bible say about _____” can give you answers that are guaranteed to be from God since they’re written in His word!
  • Ask someone more knowledgeable about the topic. If you have a spiritual leader in your life, ask them for their own opinion.  Sometimes all we need is someone else’s input to see what we’re missing.
  • Be patient. Patience is key!  I can’t stress this enough.  Maybe God doesn’t want you to know right away what he’s doing in your life.  Be still!
  • Trust that God has your best interest. Sometimes we don’t always want what God has placed in our life, but I assure you it’s something God knows we need.

I hope this helps you in times of confusion and frustration.  Remember that every good and perfect gift comes from God!

How to Forgive Like Jesus Would

Forgiving someone can be one of the hardest things in the world.  It’s something that we most of the time don’t want to do and would rather just forget about the situation.  But once you master how to truly and purely forgive someone from the heart, your whole outlook will change!  Here are some tips to learn how you can forgive like Jesus would.

Chelsea Crockett - Forgiveness QuoteThere are two passages that pretty much sum up how and why we should forgive others.  The first passage, Ephesians 4:31-32, says this: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Because God freely and generously forgives you, you should extend the same grace and forgiveness to others.  It can be extremely difficult, but getting rid of the bitterness and anger in your heart will do both you and them much more good than you realize!

The second verse, Isaiah 1:18, says: ““Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.””  If God can settle any matter, we should strive to do the same.  He forgives even our darkest mistakes.  If He can do this, we should extend the same forgiveness to anyone, despite how “in the wrong” they might be.

Clean your heart from any grudges or negativity and forgive others as Jesus forgives you!

3 Verses to Pray for Patience

We’re in the generation of wanting things at the snap of our fingers, right when we ask for it.  We often find it hard to trust that God’s plan is perfect and think that ours may be better in the long run.  It can sometimes get frustrating when we have to wait and be patient.  It may even start to feel like the wait is too much to bear.  Luckily, God gives us His word to help us turn to when we’re in need of patience!Chelsea Crockett - Patience Bible Verse

Proverbs 14:29 says, “Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.”  In this verse, God is telling us to be slow to anger.  We often get so frustrated when God doesn’t answer our prayers right away, or even at all.  We need to pray for understanding and self-control.  If you can’t change the outcome, change the perspective!

Ephesians 4:2 says, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”  This verse is a perfect verse to reflect on when struggling with patience with other people.  Be humble and kind, having love for even those who hurt and persecute you!

2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”  This is one of my favorite verses about patience.  God is never slow or absent, He is simply fulfilling His will for you (and His plan is perfect!)!  He is patient with us as we should be with Him!

I urge you all to pray for patience.  It will change your perspective and give you peace in all situations.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of Failure

Failure can be a terrifying thing. You may think you have everything figured out until life takes an unexpected turn. You may be confused and not understand why you can’t succeed. There is much to know about failure including all of the wonderful blessings hidden throughout it. If you’re trying to get through a time of disappointment or failure, then this article is for you!Chelsea Crockett - Failure Quote

In 2 Corinthians 4:2, it says “We are persecuted, but God does not leave us. We are hurt sometimes, but we are not destroyed.” Even back in biblical times, God’s people felt pain, rejection, and of course, failure. Proverbs 24:16 says, “The righteous may fall seven times but still get up, but the wicked will stumble into trouble.” Like the picture above, God wants us to persevere, especially through times where we don’t believe we can.

I know you all have heard me talk about the verse Jeremiah 29:11 a numerous amount of times… But if you don’t know it, it says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I’ve always loved this verse because it constantly reminds me that I shouldn’t be afraid of failure or a little fork in the road. At the end of the day, God will provide a better plan than we could ever put together ourselves. Trust in God and know that we will be successful if we simply follow Him!

There’s nothing I love more than starting my day off with a devotion. If you’re unfamiliar with what this is, it’s usually a short message/lesson on different topics to start or end your day with God’s Word. My devotional books give me a little encouragement and advice on how to get through the day being the best person I can be. I thought I’d share my three favorite books with you, so you can bring some light into your day, too!

  • My all-time favorite morning devotional is Jesus Calling. Each day there is a little passage that ends with a Bible verse to go along with it.Chelsea Crockett - Jesus Calling It definitely starts my day off right with a little advice on how to get through school, practice, or anything else I have scheduled. You can order it online here: http://tiny.cc/JesusCallingDevotional.
  • Trusting God Day by Day by Joyce Meyer is another awesome daily devotional. Again, this book has a passage each day but ends with a simple challenge about trust. The challenges are as simple as praying to God about a certain topic or choosing to let go of negativity for the day. Each day is different! Why not challenge yourself to stay on track?
  • Another daily devotional by Joyce Meyer that is aimed towards women is called The Confident Woman Devotional. Each page opens with a Bible verse followed by a encouraging and guiding passage. What’s cool about this book is that it ends with a prayer. That way you’re always starting your day in God’s Word and talking with Him.

What’s your favorite devotional book to read? Share with me below and I might check it out myself!

Bible Dating Advice 101

When it comes to dating, the Bible isn’t the first place you’d think of when looking for dating advice. Usually your best friends or your sister seem like the perfect people to get a lesson from on the subject. But believe it or not, the Bible is filled with hundreds of simple tips that all of us should take notes on. Here are three of my favorites :).

First and foremost, Chelsea Crockett - Bible VerseI think one of the most important things in a relationship is building each other up. If you’re getting to know a person that puts you down or isn’t a positive influence, get out of that relationship! 1 Corinthians 13:7 says, “Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preservers.” Live by it!

Romans 12:9 says, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” This is so important, not just in the dating aspect of your life. If you and your boyfriend/girlfriend “cling to what is good,” your relationship will go much smoother. And for love to be sincere means that everything you do be honest and loyal. If that’s not good advice, I don’t know what is!

One of my absolute favorite verses in the Bible is 1 Corinthians 13:4. It says, “Love is patient, love in kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” Any relationship you have in your life, whether it be romantic or between friends and family, needs patience and kindness. If you live by this, you can’t go wrong!

Good luck :)! – Chelsea

Winston Churchill once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a BIG difference.”   When you think about that…it is so true!   A negative attitude can be power draining.   A positive attitude, on the other hand, can help you enjoy a happy and fulfilling life.  It can put you in a good position with others.  No one wants to be around someone that is always complaining and fault finding.Chelsea Crockett - Power in Positivity

All of us need to change our attitude at times and all that takes is changing the way we think!  When the going gets tough…just realizing that this too shall pass and just saying  “Oh well”….can really help us to keep things in perspective.  Try not to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Most importantly, stay in touch with God.  He’s the One who sees the big picture and orchestrates everything around us.  Make your time with Him an important part of your daily schedule.  Do your best to communicate with Him through prayer, reading your Bible and worship.   Do your best to be a positive person.   The more positive you are….the more powerful you are!

Have you ever thought about how precious and special you are to God?  Many of us spend time feeling like we are not what we need to be.  We often compare ourselves to other people and assume something is wrong with us.  There is, however, a way to stop that negative thinking.  It is positively and frequently thinking and saying “God loves me unconditionally.”  God loves us and views us as being accepted and blameless.  Knowing God loves us unconditionally is a necessity to make progress in our walk with Him.Chelsea Crockett - God's Unconditional Love

Our relationship with God should be based on love and acceptance, not fear.  The enemy wants us to be focused on what’s wrong with ourselves.  But knowing we are accepted and loved even in our imperfection is such a relief.  God’s unconditional love gives us confidence, boldness, and fearlessness.  When you go to bed at night, repeat to yourself “God loves me unconditionally and through faith I am made right in His eyes.”  Add some power to your life and meditate on God’s Word!

Blessings,

Chelsea

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” (Mark 11:23 NIV) Chelsea Crockett - Problems

I recently heard a sermon at my church that was focused on the above scripture. I thought it was really good and worth sharing with you!  We all have to face mountains in our everyday life.  It seems like you hurdle one and then another comes along.  Life is always going to throw obstacles at you.  What is important is how we handle them.

The preacher made it very clear that we have to trust God with our mountains, AKA problems.  He said we can continue to hit the mountain over and over again, only to injure ourselves…or…..We can pray about it and trust that God will take care of it.  I can’t tell you how many times I have had a problem and played a million different scenarios of it in my head.  It’s exhausting!  I am really trying to take his advice and pray about anything that is bothering me and then practice letting it go!  It’s not always easy to do but God has been showing me that He can handle things for me a lot better than I can.  It’s so much easier to “Let go and let God!”  So, I challenge you to give it a try the next time you are faced with a worry.

In Joshua 1:9, God says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Worry is something that everyone struggles with. Maybe you worry about taking a driver’s test, family fighting going on in your house, or whether or not you made the basketball team. There are some worries bigger than others and lots of anxiety that comes along with each and every one of them.Chelsea Crockett - Anxiety

I am definitely one for over thinking which includes millions of “what ifs.” Sometimes I let them get the best of me which leads to chickening out or pushing whatever I’m worrying about to the back of my mind. Oftentimes, I forget what God tells me about worry and listen to what the devil says. The devil continues to put the worrisome thought in my head and can result with me second guessing myself. Joshua 1:9 is the perfect verse for when I’m doing just that. The first question in the verse is pretty powerful. All throughout the Bible, we see God test several people with certain tasks or commands. We also see that God never pushes them past what they can bear, and delivers them in the end. We need to trust God when we go through hard times or something as little as a homework assignment. He continually reminds us of His presence in all situations, good and bad.

God’s unfailing love is something to invest your trust in, so pray about it! Once you do, you will find never ending peace and comfort when worry comes your way!

Sometimes it’s tough being a teenager!  We have a lot of decisions to make at such a young age.  What friends should I get involved with?….Should I go to a party or not?….Where will I go to college?….What do I want to do with my life?….What path should I take?  Some decisions are easy while others can be very difficult.  I want to encourage you to make your decisions by praying about them and then being led by where God takes you.  Romans 8:28 says “We are assured and know that (God being a partner in their labor) all things work together and are (fitting into a plan) for good to and for those who love God and are called according to His design and purpose.”Chelsea Crockett - Decisions

The great news here is that if we partner with God to make our decisions then He will guide us and use them for our own good.  Even if we make an incorrect decision, God can take that mistake and work it out for the better!  Our trials are often what leads us to our final destination. Although it may seem our trials are hurting us, God is working in weird ways to make those trials benefit us in the long run.  Sometimes we have to make decisions to play it safe and other times we have to make choices to step out of our comfort zone.  Often times we have nothing more than faith to help us take our next step.  Trust in God’s word and keep your heart ready and willing to obey….knowing that it just might take you out of your comfort zone but bring you to your best destination!
