Growing up in church, I would frequently hear the pastor say to have a “clean heart” or to be “pure at heart.” I always wondered what it meant and why it was so important. I decided to do a little research to find out. Here is what I found.

Being pure in heart means that your heart is clean of sin, it has been purified by Jesus dying on the cross. Your sins have been forgiven and your slate is washed clean. It also means your thoughts are pure, they are not prideful, discontent, impatient, angry, or envious. You strive to do things that please God and your behaviors reflect how God would want you to act. Your intentions are pure, and you are not hateful or greedy. The only way to be pure of heart is to give your life to Jesus and ask him to cleanse you of your sins! God makes our hearts pure. Psalm 51:10 says “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

It is so hard to be pure of heart. As humans, it is easy to give into greed, anger, selfishness, pride, discontent, and impatience. It is hard to keep our thoughts and actions pure. But you know what? God forgives us for that! He cleanses us and makes us white as snow. He loves you no matter your mistakes and impurities. To be close to God, we need to strive to have a pure heart for Him.
